I wonder if calling the movie Godzilla vs MUTO instead would lessen some of the odd criticism.

Maybe for some it might? For me it wont. My problem is with the non-compelling human characters and their scenes taking up 2/3 of the movie. Jaws and Alien barely showed their creatures but the human scenes were wonderful. The 1/3 of the movie (Godzilla and Cranston) were perfect for me. So 7/10 for me, still a solid rating but it easily could have been a 9/10.

"Director Gareth Edwards has already stated that if a sequel was ever made, he'd use the same anticipation model he used for the first movie - where, like in Spielberg films, the monster is talked about for the first half of the movie before it's finally revealed."

That's concerning.

Nope, sounds promising. Especially if they manage to make the human story more captivating.

it would be concerning ( and redundant ) if it applied to Godzilla again.

however, if he means the building up to the reveal of the new monster, then that would be ok.

the "fight teases", however, have got to go.

EDIT: My review is up :D Well over at comic book movies -OniGoji Review
I wanted to post it up here on the forum, but it's generally way too long lol
But yeah, GODZILLA, I absolutely loved it, can't wait for the sequel!

Not one bit concerning. Love it.

Loved everything about this movie except how bland 2 of the main characters were (Aaron Johnson and Ken Watanabe). I felt there was plenty of monster action and waiting until the climactic battle to show some real Godzilla shots was perfectly fine with me. It just made me appreciate the full shots we got even more.

I AM concerned if they use the same model in a sequel though. I don't need to see Godzilla for all of the movie, but at this point we've already seen him front and center. There's no need to "reveal" him anymore. They don't need to have him on screen for 75% of the movie, but waiting till the end to show him in his full glory again would just be redundant.

and that's why I really think Biollante would make a perfect foe in the next movie.

she has the tragic, human backstory built into her character ( a desperate father trying to save his daughter ).

and, she ties perfectly into the "warning theme" of the arrogance of man trying to control nature ( and Godzilla being the force that restores balance ).

Same thing I keep saying. :applaud

I think it is silly that Edwards wouldn't take the criticisms of his second movie into consideration. But either way, I'm excited for the sequel.

What exactly about Wantanabe's performance stood out so much that people constantly bring it up? Dude is a scientist who works for a corporation that has studied giant prehistoric monsters for years and he is finally seeing them up close. Is he supposed to look anything other than overwhelmed or dumbfounded by what is happening? I actually really enjoyed whenever he was on screen, but maybe I am a weirdo.

If any of you saw Monsters it was done in much the same "anticipation model"

Also a great film.

My crtiticisms more on the human characters and their scenes. Im fine with not too much screen time for Godzilla, but make the scenes without him compelling for goodness sake. Make me care for the characters. I cared for one, Cranston's character, and they took him away too early.

Agreed. Especially considering how true that is to most of the Godzilla movies ever made, i have no problem with it. It's part of the fun for me.

LOL at all these so-called die hard Godzilla fans complaining that all G did in this film was swim, walk around, and fall over.

Have none of you SEEN any of the other 28 Godzilla films?

You're not a weirdo, love him too.

Yes yes and yes. Exactly.

I love people saying he has a cameo in his own movie, it's the furthest thing from a cameo.

Because of that b.s. exaggeration I went in expecting not to see Godzilla until the last twenty minutes . I'm glad it's not true. Bring on the sequel!

It's a great approach provided you have interesting characters to propel the setup. As others have said that was an issue with this film even though the slow burn up to the reveal of Godzilla had very good pacing. Once [BLACKOUT]Bryan Cranston dies[/BLACKOUT] there are no really compelling characters on screen, though I did enjoy Watanabe.

So ready for the sequel :woot:

"Monsters" had better human characters. The build-up to seeing the monsters, and how much different their behavior was to what was expected, just enhanced the wonder in their actual appearance. For all the comparisons Edwards is getting to Spielberg for this movie, it was in that one that he used the style to full effect.

I'm hoping the sequel makes Serizawa a little more compelling. Also Rodan. Let's get some giant monster bro-downs here.
