The characters in Godzilla 1998 were much more entertaining to watch at least, even if they were caricatures.
The characters in this Godzilla were all caricatures to, very boring ones.
I'm not going to compare this Godzilla film to Zilla '98 since it's been so long since I saw that movie. But I will compare it to Emmerich's other big disaster film of the 90s, Independence Day. People might mock that film for the cheese factor, but one thing that made that movie really work was the cast. Almost all of the characters were fun to watch. Bill Pullman's president? Yeah, I'd vote for that guy. Will Smith's fighter pilot? I want to ride along on a flight with him. Jeff Goldblum's nerdy scientist? I could buy that he could devise a plan to save the world. Maybe they weren't the most realistic characters, and maybe some would say they were caricatures. But they were enjoyable. Even though the aliens and their gigantic ships were the obvious big draw in the film, most of it focused on the impressive cast and all of them were fun to watch. Sadly, I can't say the same for the humans in Godzilla.

I like that analogy haha.
