Godzilla (2014) - - - - Part 13

The characters in Godzilla 1998 were much more entertaining to watch at least, even if they were caricatures.

The characters in this Godzilla were all caricatures to, very boring ones.

I'm not going to compare this Godzilla film to Zilla '98 since it's been so long since I saw that movie. But I will compare it to Emmerich's other big disaster film of the 90s, Independence Day. People might mock that film for the cheese factor, but one thing that made that movie really work was the cast. Almost all of the characters were fun to watch. Bill Pullman's president? Yeah, I'd vote for that guy. Will Smith's fighter pilot? I want to ride along on a flight with him. Jeff Goldblum's nerdy scientist? I could buy that he could devise a plan to save the world. Maybe they weren't the most realistic characters, and maybe some would say they were caricatures. But they were enjoyable. Even though the aliens and their gigantic ships were the obvious big draw in the film, most of it focused on the impressive cast and all of them were fun to watch. Sadly, I can't say the same for the humans in Godzilla.

I completely disagree. She has ZERO character and her emotions were "look up in awe" and "sob"

Yep.

Doesn't matter though because she is 'supposed' to be one note.
I wish someone had told be before the movie starts that the humans are inconsequential as I could have grabbed 40 winks to wake up for the climax.

I haven't read every post in the Godzilla threads but are that many people literally saying that they're supposed to be one note?

The latino solider had more persona, and he had like maybe 8 lines.

Saying this movie is better than the 98 one isn't even saying much to begin with.

Godzilla 2 doesn't have to do much, to be a signifcant improvement over this movie.

You're making fun of those actors right? It's typed out text, can't tell if you're joking or actually thought that fat white haired mayor was really Ebert. :woot:

It wasn't actually Ebert. However, the character was meant to be making fun of Ebert.

Well, I'm sorry if human emotions are lost on you, but she brought in that human/emotional element.

Her reactions were some what stunted in comparison to what was going on, and because the character lacked a personality, it was difficult to empathize or sympathize with what amounted to making emotional faces, rather than actually experiencing anything. When Joe Brody cried while watching his wife die, I almost teared up (because I was sitting next to my wife while watching this scene). When Ford Brody cried when Joe retold the story of how Ford's mother died, I bought into that.

Watching Ford's wife put on emotional faces that are meant to represent fear and shock, don't do much for me, especially since we never get to see much from the creatures that are meant to be inducing this fear and panic. And half the time, she is more worried about not knowing where her husband is than she is worried about the fact that seemingly inescapable doom is upon her in the form of godlike beasts. I don't blame the actress, as she had to work with the same questionable script as the rest of the cast.

I really don't understand the reasoning that these characters should be wooden. When did that become the status quo for acting?

I know it wasn't Ebert. I was asking Tony Stark if he really thought it was or was just joking.

I would have forgiven the movie's poor characters if the action had kicked ass but for me it did not. King Kong vs the 3 T-Rexs kicked ass. I thought the action in the movie was muddy with the monsters and Godzilla almost blending into the background.
In the sequel the director should consider day time shots or if it has to be at night have them fight in a neon lit Tokyo.

**** on SHH always deteriorates really fast. "I didn't enjoy X" becomes "X was really terrible because A, B and C".

The funny thing is notice how all the people that disliked or hated this film, are still in this thread discussing it hahaha. I loved the film but I just find it funny how they still need to keep going on and on about their dislike for it. I dunno I just don't grasp it, I don't go into threads for films I don't like to discuss for hours on end my dislike for it.

Some people just love to argue while others love to shove their "superior film opinions" on others. I've seen a bit of both in here.

As for people not being able to see Godzilla well during the last fight. I suggest making an appointment to see a Optometrist. I was worried when I heard those complaints because I was seeing it in 3D, the glasses of course always dim things a bit. I was shocked to find out that it wasn't that bad and I was able to make everything out clearly.

Yeah I didn't have any problem at all seeing anything during the final battle. I didn't see it in 3D. Everything was clear to me.

Yeah but let me bring up the whole "It's a discussion board" argument. Why would you want a thread thats a bunch of people blowing their wads over how great the movie is? Would get boring quickly. Also the "haters", myself included, have all brought up valid points why we think the movie is garbage its not like we are coming in here trolling.

i understand the to dark complaints for the last fight. the scenes were not dark if you watched movies made before 1990. but compared to modern movies it was darker. you know the cheap stupid blockbuster movies directed by hacks?

Sarcasm?

hollywood is every year throwing at us stupid blockbusters with way to bright lighting and cinematography. directors who have no idea how to use a f.. digital camera.

so if used watching those bright movies you will thinkg that godzilla was to dark.

With the exception of Jean Reno, the characters in 98 felt like they wandered in from a sitcom by mistake, and were played by bad actors.

Also, I didn't have any problem seeing what was going on in the final battle.

Godzilla was either shown at night or in the rain. The only clear shot we got was at the end during the morning.

Pretty much this.

The other thing to consider is that few people go to see a film because they suspect that they will hate it. The more likely case is that the person was excited because of a general interest or because of their fandom for a a character or fanchise.

Also, there would be no point to everyone simply coming to a discussion forum and gushing about all of the things they enjoyed, while detractors merely say "I didn't enjoy it." Meaningful discourse comes from people actually discussing their reasons.

:funny: I like that analogy haha.

The former spill guys AKA Korey and Martin's review is in line with how I feel about this movie. Martin's points are my problem with this movie. In my book they just dropped the ball BIG time. So for this was the biggest disappointment of the summer season by far.
