I don't know why there is such venom between fans of Godzilla over this movie. Alright, some liked it and others didn't. Big whoop, why do we have to insult people over it? Takes the fun out of discussing the movie.

Just got out of it for the first time. I liked it. I thought Cranston was going to be in it more, but other than that, it was a fun movie.

I'm guessing most here didn't like it?
I didn't like it, but as Spider-Fan said, I'm happy for the people who did.

I like how the tune has changed after 1 week in this film. ;) It was amusing to see the Gareth-fans insulting Godzilla fans lol.

Just to touch on the fandom topic quickly. I'm not at all familiar with the Toho movies, or anything besides Godzilla '54, '98 and 2014. So just as a general question to Godzilla fans with a lot more exposure, one of the criticisms I've seen some people voice is that Godzilla 2014 isn't a "real" Godzilla movie, what exactly would somebody mean by that?

I'm assuming it's in reference to every movie made during the 80s and 90s besides 98 that had a uniform style?

I just find it odd because I decided to watch the original 1954 movie after seeing the most recent one and hearing the criticisms, and I thought Gareth Edwards did a pretty good job of transferring the spirit of the original in his own rendition? Just find it odd that some people feel it's not really indicative of a character as a whole.

Overall I enjoyed it - 8/10. I admit the human scenes may not have been the best, but Watanabe made a big difference for me. Establishing the threat of the MUTOs early in helped, too. My only real expectation was for a movie that was better than the '98 film, and I got it easily, even if anyone else didn't.

You want fun in a fanboy discussion? You want too much Spider-Fan. :csad:

Aside from his hero status in a lot of movies in the Showa era, Godzilla has been malicious, a bringer of destruction. There are fans who wanted to see Godzilla level a city which didn't happen

Doesn't bother me. I like this version of the King

While he had some good moves right at the end, I just don't feel this version of Godzilla was particularly well established. The movie is mostly disinterested in him so the "crowning" at the end just does not feel earned.

...........the internet........and stuff.........:o

I don't see Godzilla beating Pacific Rim globally.

Pacific Rim made $411 million world wide. Godzilla, at last check, is at $323. So, $90 million among the falling current regions, with it still to open in Japan and China. Is it going to slaughter Pacific Rim's worldwide gross, but I'm pretty certain it will beat it.

Of course, the important number is that Godzilla has already grossed $50 million more than Pacific Rim domestically.

I have observed Tohokingdom for a while now. All I have to say is, that the fandom is... interesting. I think it is has to be that there are many different takes on Godzilla, that it is hard to have one defining trait. And with all those different opinions, held by passionate people, leads to very nasty fights.

Why does everyone feel worse about Cranston dying than about Binoche dying?

She has had the more impressive career.

Yea it did, Avengers had worse competition.

Because the film had largely been marketed as a Cranston show, and his presence was a draw for a lot of people.

Yeah people should probably just stop complaining about the lack of new IPs in Hollywood.

I haven't seen this still. I was really expecting a end of the world, Godzilla can attack anywhere kind of film, but from what I hear he is some sort of superhero who saves the day. I also hear the cloverfield moster was a lot more fierce, scary and destructive then the new Godzilla.

Any of this true?

At first it's ambiguous. Later, it's made obvious right down to the big brass leitmotifs that Godzilla's a hero. The MUTOs cause more visible damage simply because we see less of Godzilla than we do of them. Godzilla's way scarier, though.

yeah....Godzilla's portrayed more as that mythic, legendary beast that shows up, kicks ass, restores balance, then leaves.

Eh...

Could still be good for me, just really let down that my eyes will not be witnessing a Godzilla destruct-a-thon.

It's definitely not that. You see a lot of the other monsters, not so much Godzilla.

By the way, love your avatar and love John Carpenter's THE THING!!!

I should have clarified by global I meant non domestic, e.g. foreign box office. I could end up being wrong, but as of right now Godzilla has around $140 million to go to catch up to Pacific Rim's $309 million foreign box office total.

I don't see Godzilla getting the kind of run Pacific Rim did in China, $111 million. I don't expect Japan to full embrace the film either, but I do oddly enough think it will do better than Pacific Rim did in Japan, which only made $14 million there.

Ah well hopefully I'll like it.

And thanks man! The Thing is personally my favorite movie tied with Jaws.

Thus far, I'd say this is my favorite film of the year. I loved how Godzilla was handled & this movie more than makes up for the trash that was released in 1998.

I don't really have any gripes with the film. Godzilla is neither overused nor underused, and the cast was pretty spot on, imo.

I think it'll catch up due to the fact that it has more going for it than PR did (i.e better opening, smaller budget, more interest, etc.).

But, for all intents & purposes, I love both movies. The G-Man just had the better one to me.
