Goldeneye remake starring Daniel Craig coming to Wii?

GoldenEye 007

Two levels of the single-player show off nostalgia, fun gameplay, and a tank.
I got to check out two levels of the single-player from GoldenEye Wii at recent press event. The first level I saw was the tank level, which is based off of the original tank level in the Nintendo 64 version. In this level, you control a tank and tear apart modern day St. Petersburg in an epic, scripted experience.

I make the stipulation that it's modern day St. Petersburg because this level is very different from the original level featured in the 1997 version of the game. You see, St. Petersburg has become a more modern city in the years following the GoldenEye film's 1995 release. Thus, you're romping around highways and freeways in your destructive tour of the city.

The tank is pretty simple to control using the Classic Controller Pro. The left stick controls its movement, while the right stick controls the turret. It's a little clumsy, but it makes sense since you are controlling a tank. Your two primary weapons are a high-powered gun that has the propensity to overheat, and lock-on heat-seeking missiles. The amount of destruction that you can do with those guns is spectacular.

The level itself is pretty linear, but it's an action-packed ride. You have to take down small and big helicopters along the way using your missiles while running over or blowing up smaller annoyances.

The second level I saw was the one shown at E3 2010: the dam level, which features a lot of throwbacks to the original introductory level of GoldenEye 64. Sadly, this section was a hands-off demo. The level starts off with a familiar perspective as you come up near the bridge where the original started. This time around, you have numerous ways to work through the situation. You can hit the enemies from afar, go guns-blazing over the bridge, or go underneath and around using a tunnel below the bridge. It's one of the many touches that show that this is a modern shooter and not just a retread of a 13-year-old game.

The level continues with another nostalgic touch. You can go up to the top of the guard tower and pick up a sniper rifle. You can use that to pick off enemies and help your compatriot in this level, the eventually traitorous 006 Alec Trevelyan. Soon after that, you overtake a vehicle with Trevelyan and ride shotgun as you pose as Russians. It's more of a cinematic approach that modern day shooter fans will be familiar with. Eventually, the Russians wise up and you have to start shooting dudes from your car. That's about when the demo ended.

While there seems to be a lot of single-player levels still under wraps, I'm impressed by what I've seen. As a big fan of the original GoldenEye, its cool seeing familiar aspects of that game be changed up and improved on in this new game. Eurocom seems to be putting together a modern shooter with a whole lot of nostalgia.

I kinda want this game now after watching that video

I picked it up. Really wish it had come out for a better system. It being on the Wii really hurts as its hard to make out a lot. I also am really disappointed in the multiplayer. No body armor and I haven't come across proximity mines, so a huge fun factor of bobby trapping armor is gone. Any word if multiplayer levels are unlocked as you progress? cause the level selection is really weak.

I thought about picking this up. How does it compare to the original?

I thought about picking this up. How does it compare to the original?

Honestly, you really can't compare it. The levels are similar, but mostly only to the point that "here's the snow level", "here's the jungle level", etc. The layouts for the most are entirely different. Every once in a while, they'll toss something nostalgic at you, like dropping in on the guy in the toilet.

If you're looking to play the original Goldeneye with slightly better graphics, this isn't it. Its more of a simplified COD with homages to the original game. Still fun, but I think some will be disappointed if they're looking for a more polished original because this is more of a reinterpretation of the movie than the game.

How is the gun artillery in this one? Do we get all the guns we pick up like in the N64 game or is it more like the recent bond games where it's limited guns?

You get 3 guns, max. 1 pistol that you can't change out, and two others.

With multiplayer, instead of picking a collection of weapons that you can then pickup through the level, each player selects ONE weapon/special combo (ie: Shotgun and semtex). You can change it during the game like COD, but thats it.

Remove all memories of the original when playing this game. That way, you'll be pleasantly surprised when something familiar DOES show up, instead of being disappointed that you're not actually playing the original Goldeneye.

Hey guys, I've managed to play this game at my brother's house. Had a 4 hour hands-on with the golden classic controller.

Let me say right now that this game is just fantastic. The graphics, gameplay, sound, voice acting and music are almost on par with HD current gen consoles. Daniel Craig does a perfect job playing the voice of Bond and the character model looks just like him. Typical to the Bond he has played, everything in this game is more....refreshed and gritty.

You begin the game just above were the N64 GoldenEye begins. Bond and 006 are scoping out the area and spot two guards talking, after sneaking up behind and pressing the L button, Bond grabs one and knocks him out while 006 takes care of the other. He goes off to take control of the military truck that was used in N64 as cover, while as Bond you can take out a few guards and grab a sniper rifle with infrared.

The controller immediately feel spot-on coming from COD style. I should mention that upon beginning the game, I chose the Agent difficulty level, however there was also a Classic level, which is more in line with N64. It makes you use armor and a health bar takes damage over time. The style I chose is like COD in the fact that taking cover regains health.

Anyway, I took out a few guards with the sniper rifle and quickly made my way to the truck as Alec shot a guard and pulled another out of the truck, and took it over. I rode shotgun and Alec and Bond spoke about a few things in the mission. They also had a joke about whose Russian was better as they were coming up to a patrol team. Alec was first and then a guard spoke with Bond and Alec pulled a gun and took out both. At which point you take an AK-47 and begin opening fire as Alec speeds off.

The whole sequence was just amazing. seriously the acting was spot on and the script is above what most FPS get away with now days.

After the truck crashes, Alec and Bond have to make their way to the bottom of the Dam. They break up from here and Alec takes care of himself while you have to take out more guards and get to grips with the controls even more. Guards will kick your arse if you are not careful and taking cover is really needed. I must admit I didn't die once, but sure came close.

Another thing I got to use was the phone which Bond uses to gather mission intel and take photos. Also allows Alec to communicate as the mission goes on. Once you take a few photos of a new helicopter, you make your way to the edge of the Dam where in the movie Bond bungee jumps off. However this is different and with the rain pouring down, Alec uses a parachute and jumps off. Bond is about to do the same thing, but guards come up and demand he takes it off. So he does, but pulls the cord and jumps off without a chute.

He slides down the Dam wall and the credits kick in and the GoldenEye theme plays. This time sung by Nicole whatever her name is from Pussycat Dolls. Sounds perfect and the images are intercut with Bond falling down the Dam. Looks really spot on and the theme is the same as sung by Tina Turner, but sounds even better.

As they come to a close, we find Bond swimming to the ledge to pull himself up and Alec is waiting. He helps you and says they need to enter the facility and plant the charges. Before parting ways again, the famous words are spoken. "James, for england?" "For England, Alec."

and so the fun begins from here. The facility is completely different from N64, but you still come out of the crawl space within the toilet above a guards head. once the charges are planet in one room, Bond tries to contact Alec, but 006 isn't responding. And I seriously got chills down my spine because I knew what this meant and was waiting to see how it was going to be played out in the game.

You enter another room and jump behind a trolley holding bombs and in the middle of the large room is Alec with Orimov holding a gun to his head. He gives you 10 seconds to drop your gun and begins counting. Bond uses the trolley like the movie, and when you drop your P99, Alec is shot and Orimov walks up to Bond. You quickly explodes the charges within the other room and escape to the runway area.

But it doesn't end there. You get in contact with MI6 and Tanner tells you an escape route will be ready in 6mins. Bond says he doesnt have that long and must fend for himself shooting guards and dodging a military helicopter. You eventually manage to take out the helicopter and make your way to the runway, which is much longer than the movie and N64. This time the plane is a small private jet, and you jump on a bike and speed off after it.

Two guards on motorbikes give chase and you kill them, but another guard is inside the plane and opens the door and begins shooting, but you kill him only to find another helicopter appearing at the end of the runway and opens fire on the plane and you. The pilot is hit, the wheel is also and veers toward the helicopter which destroys itself, and Bond goes off the edge after the plane. From here, the game takes over and Bond grabs onto the door opening, you press L and R buttons fast to pull yourself in and then do the same to wrestle the controls and pull the plane up.

The entire runway moment was so fun and the it seriously couldn't believe how much better than N64 it was. Bond then gets his phone, contacts MI6 again and informs them the mission is complete, but that Alec is dead. Tanner says sorry to which Bond replies, "he knew the risks." It just perfectly suits this game and this bond.

While speaking on the phone, Bond is flying over the dam and watching the explosions taking the entire place apart....all from first person. The mission ends and an hour has passed already.

The next mission takes you to Dubai and Bond is at a nightclub/building where he is to meet a contact. The song I, Remember by Deadmau5 and Kaskade is playing over the entire mission as people are dancing and talking with each other. It fits the mood so well and you are talking which M about who to meet. You pull out your phone and use the camera on it to scan people in the crowd for the contact.

Before meeting the contact, a barmaid comes up with a bottle of vodka (i think) and says its on the house. Bond however says the bottle is a fake and that she should check before trying something like that. From this tiny exchange, i knew this barmaid was Onatopp undercover. There was a similar exchange at the casino in the movie about the fake licence plates on her car. So I knew this mission would be fun from here on.

I'll post more in a few mins guys.

Once you finally meet with the contact, he tells you to speak with Zukovsky who pretty much owns the nightclub/building. Unlike the movie and N64, Zukovsky isn't overweight and ex KGB, in this, he just seems to be some russian mobstar. Couldn't really hear much of the exchange because my brother was talking louder than the TV. however he talks with Bond and then someone shoot Zukovsky and throws the gun away.

I was surprised by the shoot, but not the shooter. Onatopp yells out that Bond shot him and runs off leaving Bond to kill the guards and escape the place. I actually died a few times during this mission because the nightclub music is still playing and makes it hard to pinpoint the shooters, which I liked. Plus the moving lights and dark corners are perfect for guards to pop out of.

Anyway, mission completed and the next one is fun. You are at a military arms expo. Bond is to meet up with a an american contact named Jake something. once again, my brother was talking loud. Im not sure if Jack Wade CIA is in the game, but this could be someone taking his place.

Jake tells bond about a military helicopter which can withstand an EMP and shows him from the window. Bond says he wants to meet the pilots and Jake shows him to the area, but when he opens the door, Jake is shot as are the two pilots. Two people run off, which I'm pretty sure would follow the movie being Onatopp and Orimov, however I had to stop playing after this.

But let me tell you people, I don't own a Wii and this game has made me want to buy one. Its such a fun and exciting game and I did not want to turn it off. I actually wanted to finish the game and find out what was going on, not just finish to grab the achievements...which I find myself doing with COD games.

I didn't use the wiimote and nunchuk, but my brother told me they work well.

Hopefully I'll play some more and be able to let you guys know what else takes place.

I played the first level of the game and really really enjoyed it. I was surprised that Nicole Scherzinger did such an amazing cover of Tina Turner's theme for the movie.

Does this game support the Gamecube Controller or just the Classic one ?

I just saw the multiplayer footage and it makes me want to buy a Wii just to invite people over for some split screen action!!

Sucks they had to replace Pierce Brosnan, but at least BLOFELD is back in multiplayer! :woot:

Just bought it today. It's very cool. Alot more different than I was expecting but that's ok. Change is good.

This was an excellent game. I haven't even begun to fully explore the multiplayer with friends. But the single player was fun, even if it was more Call of Duty than Goldeneye. Really though only the Dam level and only a few bits of levels here and there felt like a remake of the classic game. It felt like another adaptation of GE as a video game (with that said Craig seemed pretty bored here and the new motive for 006 to go rogue was laughable in this modern version).

Still very fun shooter and the first time I played a shooter on Wii and was impressed by the fluidity of the controls.
