Good third movies, do any exist?

Oh yeah, Christmas Vacation destroys 'European Vacation'.

Bourne Ultimatum is easily my favorite Bourne movie. And Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade was the perfect end to that trilogy, imo. Others that are at least as good as the ones that came before:

LotR: RotK
Toy Story 3
Oceans Thirteen
Back to the Future 3
Die Hard: With A Vengeance
Army of Darkness
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Honestly, I think there are about as many great "Third Movies" as there are great "Second Movies." Sometimes they're awesome, sometimes they suck. I hate this myth that the Third Movies of a series are doomed from the start. That's just annoying.

I think it's b/c of the stigma created with The Godfather Part 3, Mad Max 3 and even Star Wars with Return of the Jedi.

Everybody who has posted in this thread so far needs to go kill themselves for not mentioning "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly."

OMG you're right. What have I become?!:csad: :oldrazz:

Seriously though, that one's MUCH better than the two that came before it, imo.

what is it about the number THREE that turns good franchises to ****?

off the top of my head I can only think of a few good third movie

1. toy story 3
2. back to the future 3
3. return of the king (although I hated the multiple endings)
4. harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban

and then I'm struggling.

Funny, I found Azkaban to be the worst of the potter films, which is sad since Hermaime played the biggest role in this one and I wanted to like this movie just for that fact.

I personally liked Underworld: Rise of the Lycans more than the previous two Underworlds.

I think Azkaban is the most accessible Potter film and perhaps the best one thus far. Now, from what I've heard, it's the least faithful but I don't see how 5 and 6 aren't either, with their butchering.

I would probably have mentioned it had I seen it. That trilogy is still on my list of movies to watch before I die.

Christmas Vacation
Scream 3
Toy Story 3
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Army of Darkness
Return of the Jedi

Uhhh, that's it I'm spent. Those are the only ones I can really think of.

For what it was, I liked Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome: The only kid friendly movie that I can think of with S&M costumes.

Usually artists run of creative juice on well-worn material by a third installment. However, there are some notable exceptions:

-Return of the Jedi
-Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
-Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
-Christmas Vacation
-Back to the Future Part III
-The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
-Goldfinger
-Army of Darkness
-The Bourne Ultimatum
-Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
-Ocean's Thirteen
-Toy Story 3

And I don't care what anyone says, because while this was a huge step down from the last movie, I still liked it....

-Spider-Man 3.

So there are some.

Yes and No.

Everything is subjective.

But for me?

Spider-Man 3
Jurassic Park 3
HP & POA
Revenge of the sith
Return of the jedi

More that I dont remember.

with the 3rd movie the 2nd movie is so amazing they are bound to fail,

SM2 - amazing
X2 - amazing
T2 - amazing
ESB - amazing
Aliens - amazing
godfather 2 - amazing

where do you go from that? pretty much all of the above movies I was like 'no way are they going to top that' and they didn't. and I'm calling it right now, nolan wont either with TDKR

techically army of darkness is number 2 as evil dead 2 is pretty much an exact remake of evil deal 1
No it isn't, only because the first 7 minutes tell the same story doesn't mean the movie should be called a remake, Raimi just likes to show what happened in the first movies, it happened with spider-man 2 and 3, and even with army of darkness. Raimi wanted that scenne to appear for those who didn't see the first film, he himself stated that the scenne isn't canonical and that evil deadd 2 is in fact a sequel.
While it wasn't exactly the 3rd film and many will probably complain i'll choose Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

Crap, how could I have forgotten, Romero's best zombie movie with the greatest lead zombie of all time.

Day of the Dead.

Gary Oldman and Christian Bale say you're wrong.

I believe in Nolan.

Can I count Chasing Amy as a "third film?" It is the third in what was called the "Jersey Trilogy" (which later became the Jersey Chronicles or something). I love all of the Kevin Smith "Askewniverse" movies, so if Chasing Amy counts, I'm counting it, damn it!

Pretty much all of them have been said.

That's why I'm glad they didn't shoot their load with Iron Man 2. Part 3 is going to be the 'Last Crusade' or 'Oceans Thirteen' of the series.

Only the first 7 minutes of ED2 are "remake", because they couldn't use (rights issues, different studios, you know, the usual...) the material from the first movie for the recap.

I have friends who dislike spider-man 2, but love spider-man and spider-man 3, friends who find the nolan batfilms boring, but love the burton ones religiously (I like both series), think X2 sucks but love wolverine, and so on. There is not a bound to fail rule, there is a "well studios interfering are screwing over the movie" rule though.
