They'll put one up to celebrate the 169th anniversary of the birth of someone you've never heard of or the 455th anniversary of some discovery no one cares about. Today marks the centenary of the birth of Nelson Mandela. One of the greatest figures in modern history would have been 100 today and are Google celebrating? Nope, they don't give a damn, apparently. Oh, but watch out for tomorrow when it'll be the 326th birthday of Mindy Wombat, the discoverer of narcissism and the underwater yawn.

I'd rather they use the doodles to make people aware of less widely known important people and events than waste them on someone that's extremely well known.

Besides they are a harmless way of informing people. Not something worth getting bent out of shape over or starting a thread for.

Noticed those top centre images where the generic google logo would be and ages back checked one and saw the same as you describe.

Naturally, a company picks and chooses whom it feels is worthy of mention.

In before Devils Advocate - private company so their " right " to do so etc.

Theyve released so many doodles over the years and mentioned such a wide variety of people and events that it's impossible to make a case for Google being "selective".

Also, Google had a doodle for Nelson Mandela on July 18, 2014.

:)

Took me all of 15 seconds to Google search and find that.

Yeah, I'm not inclined to make any case for anything about it,their site, their $$ their choice.

:)

No but you were inclined to imply Google doesnt consider Mandela worthy of mention.

That doesn't equal making a case for or against them.

I remember the story from a couple years ago, when they honored Yuri Kochiyama, who was an admirer of Osama Bin Laden. I didn't care to pay attention to them after that.
