Hey ho. Another thread by me.

Anyway, if anyone may remember I've stated in the past I'm a new Yorker. I was 15 when the towers fell... weird day.

Well I have to say watching superman fall brings a little tear to my eye now remembering how everyone was looking up at the towers as they fell. Am I alone in this? I can't believe I missed the possible similarity, guess I was too busy thinking about that kid.

What?

Are you kidding me!?

Thousands of real people died in the towers when they fell, watching it was like watching the apocalypse, there was this knot in the pit of my stomach that's still there anytime I think about it.

Superman didn't die. He was messed up, sure, and yeah, he's this world-saving hero, but he survived.

There is no comparison.

People standing in the streets looking up helpless to stop something devastating from happening?

Yep. No comparison. How silly of me.

I know that you mean Wesyeed, the people were standing thier watching Superman fall and were unable to do anything about it, just at 9/11, being an Englander i could only watch it on T.V, but i desperatly wanted to do something to help and not just sit there, but i didnt have choice.

Good point. I know it shocked me. They were showing the Pentagon and I think they'd also mentioned Pennsylvania. Then they cut back to New York and I was watching it with my Dad on a small B&W television at the time. I remember saying disbelievingly, "It's gone." I believed it imediately after I said it that the first tower was gone. All that we could see was something that looked like ash from a volcano and the other tower. It was only much later that they showed it falling. The second one fell while I was walking to the lounge room to see it in colour. This was past midnight our time by the way.

I must admit I didn't realise how young you are Wesyeed.

Exactly, thank goodness for tv. I remember it vividly. It was just another ho hum day at school, with me droning along through some essay about something I didn't give a darn about. Other kids were doing the usual jibber jabber, not paying much attention to the lessons etc. But when we saw the those unfocused images of the twin towers smoldering on tv, everybody was like this:  Teachers, students, janitors, everybody was plain stunned. And absolutely powerless. The same I think can be said of the stunned onlookers, regular joes, can't do a thing to prevent Superman from hitting the ground. All there's to do is hope he some how survives it and emergency personnel do the best they can with what's found in the rubble after the impact.

Another interesting part is when little Superboy touches the suit. That's like when I touched the Twin Towers as a kid.

Oh well, back to getting this transformers trailer to play... curse computers.

Its a scene you can impose a lot of meaning on. mostly when i saw it, it was the idea that this man you look up to, you think is invincible can come crashing down and be put in hospital like a mere mortal. The man that has saved you how many times now needing saving himself. I never made the connection with the world trade centre but the reaction of the people on the ground, utter shock and dread i can see where you get it from.

I never thought of it that way, but that's a very interesting comparison.

I concur.

The hospital scene reminded me a bit of Christopher Reeve also. The man who was once considered the most powerful man is left now in the most weakest, vulnerable position.

Nothing to see here people, move along.:csad:

The thing from 9/11 that affected me even more than the towers falling is that infamous shot of the legendary Falling Man. Just see a picture of that nearly brings tears to my eyes and I have to look away quickly. There was a documentary about the Falling Man on channel 4 in the UK a while ago and I tried to watch it...managed a few minutes but it was just too raw and I had to turn it off. Even nearly six years on I can't read or watch anything to do with 9/11, despite that I was not personally connected to the tragedy in any way.

For me the most distressing scene in SR is when Luthor and his gang are beating the **** out of Superman. It's so hard to watch Supes so helpess and totally unable to defend himself. I was surprised at how graphic the scene was, though I like the dark tone of it. Very well done from a cinematic standpoint.

Yeah, I too enjoyed Superman being shanked in the kidneys and gang banged. :)

Lex must have been taking tips while in prison.

That is a very insightful comparison.

As long as Superman's fall isn't supposed to allude to Icarus or Lucifer, I think we're OK.

...OH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check out that second link more closely:
Lucifer - Christian Tradition:
Christian tradition of a literal fall from heaven drew upon the Homeric tradition, familiar to many.

"the whole day long I was carried headlong, and at sunset I fell in Lemnos, and but little life was in me" Iliad

Homer's description of the parallel supernatural fall relates the fall of Hephaestus from Olympus in the Iliad I:591ff; the fall of the Titans was similarly described by Hesiod.

On the yacht, Lex has a picture of Hephaestus (or was that Prometheus? I have to rewatch it...) and gives Kitty his speech about gods bringing fire to the people. Superman's fall brings this full circle.

Cross-posting in the literary analysis thread...

Interesting post ariellem. :)

I think you have a different meaning in mind with the words gang banged. 'Cos it doesn't mean what was shown onscreen. Ganged up on - yes - not gang banged. :wow:

well, i only saw the Towers fall on TV, like most people in the world i guess.

but i do understand what you mean, looking up watching an impossibility happen right before your eyes.

didnt think you were so young when the horror happened dude. what a way to be introduced to the grown up world huh? :|

Superman's fall is not Lucifer being kicked out of heaven, or the sun melting Icarus' wings. Superman is falling because he is dying of exertion and poisoning after saving the world. Satan tried a little coup d'etat against the boss, and Icarus wanted to look cool. There are many Jesus parallels in the Superman story. http://www.beliefnet.com/story/193/story_19375_1.html

It was a picture of Prometheus on The Getrude. Lex's speech is about Prometheus.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0348150/quotes
Lex Luthor: Do you know the story of Prometheus? No, of course you don't. Prometheus was a god who stole the power of fire from the other gods and gave control of it to the mortals. In essence, he gave us technology, he gave us power.
Kitty Kowalski: So we're stealing fire? In the Arctic?
Lex Luthor: Actually, sort of. You see whoever controls technology controls the world. The Roman empire ruled the world because they built roads. The British empire ruled the world because they built ships. America; the atom bomb. And so on and so forth. I just want what Prometheus wanted.

A liked this reference.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0348150/trivia
Lex Luthor says, "To the primitive mind, any sufficiently advanced technology would be indistinguishable from magic," which is a paraphrase of an Arthur C. Clarke quote, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" ("Profiles of the Future," 1961). Clarke is mentioned in the closing credits of the film for this reason.

in all truthfulness, it wasn't that touching to me.

Next to 'the kid' kissing Supes on the head.....most touching part of the movie to me.

dont see any similarities, other than them both being things I wished never happened...

um naw homie I dont see how they compare at all... I just think you got that good wesyeed that you smokin on... :woot:

It didnt compare to me at all, no film can match that horror. Watching the towers fall on T.V. was so......surreal. It was like seeing a bad car accident, you want to turn away from it but you can't.

I never thought of it that way, but I definitely will next time I see it.
