Grayskull: Masters of the Universe - Part 2

Frankly if things like Avengers and LOTR can be done where everyone has their own little subplot, this can be done with most of the characters intact. Got Adam dealing with being a Hero, Man-At-Arms dealing with Teela and vice versa, Orko dealing with a new world, etc.

A He-Man that appeals to 40 years olds? Sorry I had to giggle.

That same thought is how we got this Lone Ranger movie. "Hey, it's a kids concept...lets not cater to old people!"

Making a movie that specifically will not appeal to the exact audience who would otherwise want to see it makes NO sense.

Here's some casting ideas -

He-Man - Jai Courtney
Man-At-Arms - Sean Bean
Teela - Rachelle Lefevre
Orko - Kristen Schaal (who says Orko has to be male?)
Stratos - Kevin McKidd
Zodac - Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje
Ram-Man - Dean Norris
King Randor - Dolph Lundgren
Queen Marlena - Chelsea Field
The Sorceress - Gillian Anderson
Skeletor - Guy Pearce
Evil-Lynn - Tilda Swinton
Beast-Man - Terry Crews
Trap-Jaw - Danny Trejo
Tri-Clops - Ray Stevenson
Mer-Man - Walton Goggins

Spoiler alert! Man-at-arms dies, then.

It's best to try and make the movie to appeal to both young and old. Make the story and action more mature, along the lines of the old mini comics. But at the same time, utilize the characters and gimmics that everyone recognizes, remembers, and in many cases, loves.

Someone mentioned the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie earlier, about how it was a good balance between the original comics and the 1980's cartoon. How it appeals to both adults and children alike. And that's what we need for a Masters Of The Universe movie.

But do kids know the Masters of the Universe brand? Wouldn't you HAVE to make it silly and childish to appeal to kids in 2014, who don't know He-Man from Kull?

Some kids might know the MOTU brand. Some might not. That's why you have to make the movie PG, or PG-13. To reach the widest possible audience.

As for the content being silly and childish to appeal to kids, that's what characters like Orko are for. Comic relief and child like neivete. Plus, for Prince Adam, he should be a spoiled rich teenager like in the 2002 series. And Teela should be the same age, for the sexual/romantic tension, but also to make the characters more relateable to children (much like how children were enthrawled by Luke Skywalker back in the 1970's & 80's).

Star Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Lord Of The Rings, all good examples of action type movies that appeal to "children of all ages" so to speak. That's just the type of movie The Masters Of The Universe film should (and hopefully will) be.

Jai Courtney as He-Man. Don't you have to be in absolutely insane shape to play He-Man? Can Jai Courtney do that? He can definitely be blond convincingly.

It seems that the consensus here is to have a more "pulpy" Conan-esque MotU. I think in an ideal world that would happen for the fans. But in case it's passed anyone by... It is not an ideal world. The rights holder wants a big four quad film so they can sell toys. Period. I just can't see a super straight faced version of MotU as coming off any better than a SYFY channel film, no matter the budget unless you get a GENIUS creative team that can thread many needles JUST RIGHT. I would love to see that, really. I fear it's not happening anytime soon.

I wonder if something like this, done relatively straight would perhaps be better as a computer animated film? I was watching RANGO today and as an all ages film it had action, characterization and of course childish humor. But the visuals could be pretty dark and intense as well.

How would you all feel about a CGI animated MotU? Would the audience be more forgiving if it were done with the general tone or style of a RANGO, EPIC or SURF'S UP? (I.E. not films done in either the PIXAR or DREAMWORKS style.)

Jai Courtney is in really good shape. I didn't recognize his name, so I googled his picture. I must say he looked quite buff in Spartacus. However, while he might have the definition to play He-Man I'm afraid he doesn't quite have the bulk. He-Man needs to be big. I mean really big. Young Schwarzenegger, young Ferrigno, young Hulk Hogan kind of big.

Hemsworth is already Thor which might be too similar a role.

How about this guy? Only he should be blonde.

I definitely want Joe in there as someone, either a villain or a hero.

Chris Hemsworth may already be Thor...but what about Liam Hemsworth?

Liam Hemsworth career might have absolutely tanked with Paranoia this year. The critics savaged him and the movie. He just has a side role in Hunger Games.

Doplph as Randor would be interesting. But I rather want him as Greyskull (in flashbacks). I think Randor needs a better actor, because he should be quite important in the film. They should go with the Keldor Connection.

What do you think about Jonathan Taylor Thomas' voice? Wouldn't it be perfect for Orko?

Viggo Mortensen should play Duncan, in my opinion! The character needs a meaty actor.

Chris Hemsworth may already be Thor...but what about Liam Hemsworth?

Or what about Liam Hemsworth as Prince Adam, and Chris Hemsworth as He-Man? Liam isn't anywhere as built as Chris. They look similar enough but not exactly the same. That way it would look believable that Adam could turn into He-Man, but also believable enough that people won't think they're one and the same.

I've said this for a long time. You deserve a golden star for this :)
They shouldn't narrow it down to just a handful of characters, but go big from the beginning. Then go even bigger in sequels.
I want Mer-Man, Trap Jaw and Mekaneck.
Fisto too, but only of Bud Spencer plays him :woot:
I think he should have done it in the 1987 film, but he didn't.

Wouldn't you HAVE to make it silly and childish to appeal to kids in 2014, who don't know He-Man from Kull?
Why would they need to? Kids are more used to darker stories and big war sequences these days. This isn't the 80s.
It really disturbs me that you think this way. Sorry to say.

Why can't they make him more serious? I don't want a Jar Jar Binks again!

I don't want another Jar Jar either. But the character was designed to be the comic relief of the show, and that should be maintained to an extent. And by "childlike neivite" I meant that everything in Eternia is new to him. Back on Trolla he was the mightiest wizard around, but in Eternia his spells often go "kablooey". Watching him dealing with this could be both very entertaining and funny, yet be in a slightly more serious tone than the original cartoon. Perhaps, instead of him always being around as he was in both cartoons, he can be a recent arrival in Eternia. We catch a glimpse of him back on Trolla, see just how powerful he truly is, and how he winds up on Eternia. Then throughout the movie he's dealing with his magic never working right, as well as being thrust into a culture very different from his own. The combination of spells going wrong and cultural misunderstandings could have audience in stitches without delving into "Jar Jar Territory".

Will the design department confuse Evil-Lyn with Sorceress this time too?
Something just was strange with the outfits in the 1987 film.

JTT as Orko, ha ha! Amazing!
What's wrong with my suggestion? I think he will work. His voice, that is.

Report: He-Man Movie Close To Happening, Shortlist Of Potential Directors Includes Joe Cornish, Rian Johnson And More

John M. Chu is out, but an even more intriguing shortlist of directors are now up for grabs for the planned live action adaptation of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, according to a new report from Schmoes Know.

Those guys, who have been pretty spot on lately in regards to fanboy property news, report that Sony have been meeting with Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), Rian Johnson (Looper), Andy Muschietti (Mama), Kirk DeMicco & Chris Sanders (The Croods) and Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street) about potentially taking the director’s chair. Terry Rossio is writing the script.

I would definitely want Stan Lee to cameo as Stand-Or!
