Greatest Trilogies of All Time

Toy Story might be the only one in which each film was better than the last. You could say Lord of the Rings, but that's more like one ludicrously long narrative to me.
Agreed

I use to have Indiana Jones in my favorite trilogies until they made an that 4th one:o

LOTR is by far the best trilogy in my list.

I thought the Mad Max trilogy was pretty good. The first movie being the weakest (although the ending was the same thing that Rocharch did to the kid killer in the Watchmen graphic novel). The other 2 movies were pretty good.

Pirates of the Carribean (till they make a 4th) has some great moments, and good CGI.

About the Wathmen/ Mad Max comparison: It ticked me off so much that they changed that scene in the movie, especially since The road warrior was playing on one of Veidts tv screens later in the movie. Its like if you're going to reference the movie anyways why not leave the scene in? that and i thought the alternative rorsach scene they used instead looked really off the way it was filmed

of topic but yeah

Although not the action adventure trilogies that we all love, the Three Colors Trilogy belong in the discussion. Distinct thematically, in character, and in cinematography, but strongly linked at the same time.

I'm thinking they didn't want to upset animal lovers with Rocharch cleaving the dog's skull, but yeah, I wasn't happy about that either. In the book at least there was the sense that he was being a hero by giving the guy a choice. In the movie he just became a murderer.

/derail off

what I think is interesting about trilogies or at least the ones of the past 10 years or so are how they are often linked by common actors.

Bruce Spence played two different characters in the Mad Max Trilogy, but recently has had small parts in The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy (as the scary looking official from utapau that obiwan talks to) in The Matrix Trilogy as The Train Man, and The Mouth of Sauran in the Extend Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Christopher Lee of course played Count Duku in star wars and Sauruman (sp?) in the lord of the rings.

Hugo Weaving plays Agent Smith in the matrix and Elrond in Lord of the rings.

Sir Ian Mckellan plays Gandalf in lotr and Magneto in the 3 X-men films.

Its all rather arbitrary and probably just has more to do with good actors who are open to doing genre movies, but I think it's interesting.

Yea, I notice stuff like that too.
I also think about what these actors will be known for, in the future, as in giving their face to epic characters from books, comics, or epic movies in general.
For example: regardless of oscar winning dramatic roles... Harrison Ford will always be Han Solo/Indiana Jones.

Will McKellan be forever known as Gandalf or Magneto?
I always thought with the impact of the Matrix movies, that Weaving will always be 'Mr. Smith', but he one uppped those by being 'V' and voicing 'Magneto' and he has another upcoming biggie too... that I don't remember now.
Hugh Jackman will always be Wolverine... etc.

What 4th one?
There is no 4th one.
Last Indy movie was ...CRUSADE.

You're high dude.

*puts on ear phones and runs away*

Dollars Trilogy
Star Wars
Back to The Future(Even though I hated 2)
Spider-Man

NOTHING beats Lord of the Rings. Best trilogy by far. Star Wars would come close but Return of Jedi was disappointing. Looking forward to how Batman turns out but in all honesty its more like three installments rather than a trilogy.

Star Wars
Indiana Jones
LOTR

I have to say these three trilogies are the best, even though all three had some imperfections (Star Wars with ROTJ, Indiana Jones with Temple of Doom, and LOTR's ROTK was a bit of a letdown). It would've been nice to add Spider-man and X-Men to the list as well, but both of their third movie was atrocious and ended up tainted the rest of the trilogy. Now unless Chris Nolan screwed up, it looks like his Batman trilogy will become one of the best trilogies in cinema.

Redskull!

Alien Trilogy!

There's no countable Alien film after 3 so it's the perfect trilogy, it has a beginning middle and literally the best end ever!

Peace

Lord of the Rings take the whole damn crown.

Then Toy Story.

I actually don't think there are many great trilogies and I think Trilogies are kind of overrated to begin with. Usually it feels like more stories could have been told and the third film rushes things so that it can be a trilogy and be one of the cool kids. Sometimes they film movies 2 and 3 back to back and make them connected and that also sucks, especially since the payoff in part 3 is rarely worth it. Just make good stand alone films and end the series when it's appropriate.

My top picks:
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The Bourne Trilogy
Star Wars (sure ROTJ was disappointing but whatever)

I still have to see Toy Story 3.

yes I hate when you have an amazing film and then the decide rather than just making one sequel to do 2 and 3 as one story. and film them at once. they usually end up sucking.

I just pretend that the matrix didn't have a sequel. Problem solved :)

I'm not a hug fan of LOTR past Fellowship. As for Indiana Jones, to me the weakest one of the first three is Last Crusade, not Temple of Doom, which is my favorite of the series.

It's a shame. POTC had potential to be another great trilogy. Lesson here: NEVER film sequels back to back. Horrible idea.

LOTR
Back To The Future
first 3 Indiana Jones.
PT Star Wars

You mean what LOTR did? Yeah, that was horrible...

Except LOTR was planned as one story from the start (not to mention the fact it was an adaptation on a book trilogy) while PotC found success in making a standalone adventure film. Everytime a series making up it's lore on the spot decides to make a two parter, it ends in disaster. The second part feels unfinished and the third part never properly finishes the story the second one began. Making parts two and three into this "epic" two part story line was really dumb and took away a lot of what made the original film great. PotC should have been the pirate equivalent of the Indiana Jones films.
