Terrible opening for a movie of this magnitude in one of the most aggressive summers ever.

Numbers indicate that it is getting terrible buzz and word of mouth.

I blame the WB brass for going to Ryan Reynolds and Justin Timberlake types. For a guy like Hal Jordan, do you know who you get? Watch a little movie called THE RIGHT STUFF. Find those actors but younger and you are set. Ryan Reynolds didn't try to disappear into the role and truly become Hal Jordan. He still brought his silly crap to the role and it was wrong for the movie JUST LIKE BLADE 3. Reynolds' schtick messed up the flow of Blade 3 as well.

Digital suits were stupid for the humanoid GL characters. For the aliens I get it, but we barely even saw more of the alien GL characters.

Hector Hammond was a weak villain. Sarsgaard did OK, but the character is just such a goofy and lame character. I mean I can enjoy reaidng about Hammond in a comic, but that's a comic. In live action he's a weak character.

Not enough Oa. I think Sinestro really should've been the villain. The family Hal Jordan stuff was done poorly as was Jordan's being dragged away from his family's home.

Edits and cuts were really awkward.

Still ****ing Reynolds screwed us. He is not Hal Jordan. He cannot overcome fear.

you're really going in on this guy aren't you.

digital stunts in this day and age does seem insanely stupid if you ask me.

What is your beef with Reynolds? He is this movies smallest problem. He may have acted like he usually does... but that's because the script didn't give him **** all to work with. Reynolds has the chops to do dramatic acting. As seen in Buried or The Nines or Chaos Theory. But obviously the script wanted Hal to be the new Tony Stark.

And about Blade 3? Nonsense. Reynolds and Parker Posey were the best things about that piece of crap. You cock juggling thunder ****! ;)

I don't know why people think that we won't get a sequel at this point.

What about licensing (toys, games, food promotions, product placements, tv rights)?
Dvd and Blu-Ray sales?
Dvd and Blu-Ray rentals?

Hope should still be alive. The studio is suppose to factor in all of the money from that plus the money from the box office to determine if it's worth making a sequel or not. Please tell me I am right?

There's no way to recoup ticket sales loss from merchanidsing. Studios usually only see 5 -10% of revenue from toys, collectibles, bath towels, etc

Home release doesn't make any difference because you have to factor in the additional costs of printing the discs, cases and distribution. Not to mention the additional marketing for home release

No way to spin this number.

The glow of the "Green Lantern" was dimmer than Warner Bros. was hoping it would be at the box office this weekend. The film, one of the most expensive movies to be released this year, collected a studio-estimated $52.7 million, a figure below even Warner Bros.' modest expectations.

Even the expectation of 55 million was out of reach.

So I guess people will be pointing out the "#1 at boxoffice" but in reality it's not overall that great.

SAAD is trying to spin this.

I don't dislike Reynolds, he was just horrendously miscast here. He is the wrong Hal Jordan. It is not completely his fault because WB went for the wrong people from the beginning. They didn't go for RIGHT STUFF type actors.

Also it's not DIGITAL STUNTS, it was the digital suits that looked like ****. His costume looked painted on his body, the suit and mask looked awkward. It constantly looked like digital trickery. It should've been a practical suit.

Lantern's going to lose money.

The question is how much does WB want the DC characters to take the place of Harry Potter?

If they are adamant about that specific plan, they'll go ahead with a sequel on a tighter budget. They can't reboot Lantern at this point. WB has a ten year plan with these DC characters.

Well I agree with you there VileOne. Reynolds was miscast. But again, I wouldn't put any blame on his shoulders.

This is one of the standard marketing ploys I can't stand. #1 at the box office means absolutely nothing if you don't have competition. That's like me bragging about winning the gold medal at the Special Olympics long jump.

When you completely kill it on your first weekend or when two big films share the same opening weekend (domestically it very rarely happens but it is more frequent in international theaters), THEN brag about being #1

Reynolds is pretty much the only thing that is consistantly praised about this movie VileOne. Although most of that praise is "it wasn't his fault" lol.

But it wasn't his fault. Reynolds didn't ruin this movie. Reynolds did his best with an appaling script. You could have put James Dean in this movie and it would have still been terrible.
That's called faint praise Morningstar.

not at all since secret origins hal was quite witty and smart mouthed aswell as serious which is what Reynolds was

Forgive me if I'm wrong -- and I'm not bashing Reynolds because A) I think he did fine & B) The studio knew what they were getting with him and rewrote dialogue after casting him -- but isn't Hal Jordan known for his dry, sardonic humor? You know, dark humor that make people think he's really a dick. I didn't see that in the film at all

Seriously.

They're going to spin/inflate the #1 at boxoffice then people are going to scratch their heads when no sequel is green lite

"No sequel? but it was number 1!"

Cars 2 and Transformers 3 will rip it piece by piece.

I will. He signed up for it. He didn't try enough to disappear in the role and really become Hal Jordan. He was still Ryan Reynolds. Here is the reason I held back. I thought maybe, just maybe Jordan would surprise me. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt because after seeing him at Comic-Con it felt like he was trying. But after seeing the movie it just didn't really work out. I don't dislike the guy and I honestly believe if he was co-starring as say Guy Gardner it would not have been such a bad deal.

But what I resent is that the marketing and even the movie itself seems to be making a commentary that it's not just Hal Jordan as the reluctant hero but truly is a hero but Ryan Reynolds as well. Like they tried to sell me on Ryan Reynolds by having the movie admit he's not a natural hero but by the end I will believe. Well . . . I just didn't. The movie didn't give me Hal Jordan. It gave me snarky, smarmy, smart-alec Hal Jordan.

Nathan Fillion played this role in an animated movie. And while it wouldn't necessarily have been the same as it did live action, Fillion and Andrea Romano seem to understand how this character is to be played. Fillion is a mature guy of respect. He's righteous and noble. We just got none of that from Reynolds who was still in immature, man-child Van Wilder mode. His goofy family scenes were pathetic. I was offended (sorta) that he sort of beat up those guys and nearly killed them with his ring after they roughed him up. They roughed him up and didn't seriously hurt them after he got those guys fired. If he accidentally used the ring in self-defense I thought it would've been fine, but he didn't. It was a badly edited moment because instead he sort of used the ring badly and wasn't called on it.

The true men of cinema all had good sense of humor and they still didn't come off as immature man-child Ryan Reynolds.

But once again, Clint Eastwood is too old. Cary Grant and Steve McQueen are dead.

To blame this film on Reynolds is a bit much, the little money it made is probably thanks to him. This film got massacred by critics, what kind of box office were people expecting at this point now. The problem was the story which multiple critics have pointed out, no sense in trying to lay the blame on the actors. They really needed to push back the release to christmas and work on the film.

Well yea, I suppose you could blame him. He basically turned up for the paycheck and the chance to star in an event movie. Apparently he didn't even read the script when he signed on. And we all know what comic book movie he really wants to do.

But really, he'd be stupid to turn down the chance to star in a big budget event movie. I think he did try his best, but I also think he knew he had a stinker on his hands. So, I can kinda forgive him.

Have you seen the interview where this girl asks him about the bad reviews? He goes all sheepish and is like "... well we tried to make it as close to the comics as possible". That's like, the only positive thing he said about it. I felt sorry for the guy.

Watching the comic con footage he really is that way in person(and it's funny). Just like when you see Downey in person(in footage.)

The thing is both stark and jordan aren't like this comics, not exactly but they can be interpreted this way. It just seems the audience is more ready to accept stark this way than they are to accept Jordan.

wonder why that is.

And if I may ad a personal note. Reynolds seems to me to be doing a dead on spiderman with all his quips and retorts...way more than toby ever could. Should Hal really be like this...

Hal didn't even know how to use the ring, it just happened unintentionally. Not to mention, Hal is supposed to be somewhat immature in his origin, he's not really a noble when starting out, those qualities are developed later on in his tenure as Green Lantern.

Yea, i'd say WB tried to give Hal Jordan a bit of a charisma make over like Marvel did with Stark. Because in the comics Stark isn't really that much of a wise cracker, he's a bit of a stiff really. But RDJ injected some charisma into him. WB obviously cast Reynolds because they wanted him to inject some (much needed) charisma into Hal Jordan. But the writing for GL is clearly no where near the writing for Iron Man.

LOL love all the cute Stark/Jordan comparisons. Maybe that's the problem, trying to mimic what Downey did with Iron Man. So there you go Marvin.

Also nowhere do I solely blame Reynolds. I blame the WB suits for going for Reynolds' types instead of real men. I blame Campbell for the digital costumes which was a stupid idea. Campbell wanted digital costume and mask and it looked terrible onscreen.

I also blame the WB for the ****** 3D conversion. Shouldn't have been converted into 3D. Results are clear. People are paying more tickets for 2D version instead of 3D. This validates my claim.

I blame the marketing people for not being able to stick with a direction for how to market the film.

Whats the guy supposed to say, "the film was horrible". The studio put in the money, the director made casino royale, goldeneye and the mask of zorro, the green lantern comic is at the height of it popularity. If I was Reynolds I would have signed on too.

I'm going to start hoping for some sort of miracle to happen. :csad:
