Green Lantern Box Office Prediction Thread

Well, then you can take a nice exit from this conversation then, good day.
I put more faith in actual numbers earned than a statistic that says some movie named "The sound of Music" made more money than almost all 3 Spidey flicks combined.

You actually think going by tickets SOLD isn't a good comparison?

That way, it has nothing to do with money, just how many people went to see it, right?

I get where your coming from, If someone says some movie from 20's was watched by more people than the Titanic, that doesn't sound too bad.

Now when I hear that a pre 1940s movie should be held in higher figures at the box office than both Avatar and Dark Knight combined, I have a hard time responding to that with a straight face.

Totally agree, but TICKETS SOLD would end the whole argument, wouldn't it?

No Superman movie has ever crossed 300 mil domestically and Batman has only done it once.

Iron man and Spider-man however have a perfect track record when it comes to grossing at least 300 mil domestically.
Adjusted for inflation SH movies in the top 100:

TDK-$583 million
Spider-Man-$546 million
Batman-$494 million
Spider-Man 2-$472 million
Superman-$450 million
Spider-Man 3-$384 million

Spidey and Bats are the top 2 there. Even a bad Spidey movie made it....which no other character can claim. That says something about the character.

One could make the case that no "Batman" movie has really blown up like that....it's really been "Joker" movies. I'm not 100% convinced the Batman character is the selling point. I would think the next Batman movie would break $300 million with no problem, but I also wouldn't be shocked if it missed $400 million.

You can tell it no thanks, Inflation tells some strange tales like Gone with wind being Avatars main competition. I don't wanna buy what it's selling.
GWTW is legit to me. It was a cultural phenomenon for decades and is still a pretty big deal today. It got multiple releases because of demand. No one was forced to go see it again or all the other movies would have had multiple re-releases too. And it actually set the TV ratings record when it was first shown on TV in the 70s. In the 80s it was chosen as the first movie to be shown on Ted Turner's brand new network called TNT and he later did the same thing when he started TCM. A 70th anniversary special edition was released last year....so it's still going strong today.

Avatar is awesome, but it's not really in the same class as GWTW culturally. Anyone want to predict a 70th anniversary edition for Avatar?

If someone says the original Star Wars sold more tickets than say TDK I can believe that as long as he doesn't follow that with saying something like Avatar should not even be in top 10 at the all time boxoffice.

Deadline is saying estimates right now are at around 53 million.
Jim Carrey had a much worse weekend though, his penguin film made an estimated 18 million.

Ouchie.

GL should have been so much better. The whole concept and setting is epic. This should be the type of movie that draws a huge crowd. But someone forgot that you need a good script too.

Deadline says it actually dropped 21% form it's Fridays numbers and made only 17mil compared to Fridays 21, I've never really thought about it but is that the norm?

I just hope this doesnt mean I have to wait even longer to see a proper Captain Marvel movie.
I have been waiting on that one for awhile.

Well, there you go, what we thought was the Top 3 all along, great post.

No. Usually for a movie like this, there is a nice bump on the Saturday numbers.

Ryan Reynolds has screwed us over again. Ryan Reynolds was a bad Hal Jordan.

I tend to blame the writing. RR has shown me that he is more than capable to playing something that isn't "Ryan Reynolds". See Buried...not a trace of "cocky smart-alec" there. He can do it if it's on the page.

Warner Bros and DC Entertainment are freaking out about the continuing negative buzz around Green Lantern pumped up by rival studios, who are telling me that the international day-and-date opening grosses are off to a "very soft start".
I lol'd at this, is Marvel sabotaging GL?

I hope Reynolds still gets to do Deadpool.
I think he is a good fit for that character.

Reynolds was born for Deadpool. He only took this GL role for the $$$.

But blaming him for this travesty is unfair. He was let down by the script. ALL of the actors were let down by the script. Even Blake Lively.

Deadline is saying the film didn't even make WB's revised expectations. GL is gone. :(

The way GL has been received they wouldn't have to.

Agreed. Totally not Ryan Reynolds fault. He was fine with what little had to work with.

Saturday figure from OW should usually increase from Friday's. If it actually drops then the movie is in big trouble. Generally Sunday should drop from Saturday, but Saturday jumps from Friday.

How can rival studios encourage bad reviews? Are the critics in their pocket or something?

Deadline didn't say they are encouraging bad reviews they said rival studios are pumping negative buzz, they are shinning a brighter light on the bad reviews and boxoffice numbers.

Oh, I can see the conspiracy theories beginning already.
