Guardians of the Galaxy Casting Thread

Olyphant's best work is on Deadwood. Hes more accessible on Justified, so thats a good one too. Hes more intense as Bullock on Deadwood, more laid back and jokey on Justified. Both performances suggest barely suppressed violence. Its those eyes.

No one from JC will be in this movie. Not gonna happen.

Jason Momoa is way too young to play Drax. Drax has a 20-something daughter.

Yeah you need someone with some "mileage" to play Drax. A very fit actor in their early 40's who can still put on muscle mass. But first and foremost someone who can act, with or without dialogue.

Honestly I like the Rock and Vin Diesel suggestions. I'm liking the Rock more due to his size and the charisma he brings. It also gives him the chance to play a different type of character.

That's actually why I'm wondering if the 6'5 Dolph Lundgren can bulk up for this a little more. But I'll be damned if he isn't too old for a franchise (he's 54). But Stallone is 66 and still doing The Expendables series right alongside with him so...**** it. I'll jump for joy if the stoic Dolph Lundgren is cast as the stoic Drax.

I like the Terry Cruise casting but even when he's serious I want to laugh. That's kind of his shtick...Any other decent muscular actors who are getting up there in age? Michael Jai White maybe? That dude's 44 and in insane shape. Actually he's as old as Vin Diesel (who's my dream choice aside from Lundgren) and even more built so...yeah. I would not object to that one at all.

Sounds like you're suggesting The Rock can act.

I'm so confused.

I like the Rock, no I don't like every role he's in, but he does well enough. So the Rock gets my vote.

The Rock can act.

Lundgren can't. And The Expendables proved that he's actually managed to get worse over the years (didn't even think that was possible). Keep him the hell away from this.

I actually think Lundgren has done a fine job over the years. His characters don't have much variation but he's not by any means a terrible actor, in my opinion. Just because someone's every role can be classified as "Tough Guy" doesn't make them a bad actor. It makes them a character actor if anything. For the role of Drax I don't see him needing to do anything more than he has done for the past 30 years. It's not like he's Channing "what emotion should I be expressing again?" Tatum bad or anything. Then again I probably have a pretty low scale for bad acting compared to most people (i.e. when your acting completely takes me out of the movie, Kristen Stewart).

Heres a list: RDJ, Scarlet Johannsen, Ruffalo, Hiddleston, Tim Roth, Jeff Bridges, Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tommy Lee Jones, Stanley Tucci, Hugo Weaving, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Stellan Skarsgard, Shaun Toub (Yinsin from IM), Evans.

Marvel knows what it's doing as far as casting (Anthony Mackie is the latest example). The Rock and Vin Deisel's of the world need not apply. If these "suggestions" are just personal fantasies, then fine. But the folks at Marvel have a very different philosophy when it comes to casting. Thank goodness.

Ah. So basically they're going to get a skinny guy who can act really well and then pump him up Hemsworth style. In that case it doesn't really matter who they pick for me. Drax is pretty much an action hero stereotype. I expect to see Ryan Gosling or somebody seemingly random as hell in the role, though and then the movie comes around and he's perfect.

I would put the Rock up there with several of those actors. The Rock is great. Hugely underrated as an actor because he's been doing too many of the ****** family movies

Vin Diesel... eh, I wouldn't exactly say he was a good actor but he can be a fun presence in certain movies.

Thing about Vin Diesel as Drax is modern Drax is basically Riddick. If you asked me five years ago if I'd ever fan cast Diesel in a role, I'd say "**** no", but it just fits.

Seriously. I know people want these academy award winners but if the role doesn't require much, I'm not casting Anthony Hopkins as The Juggernaut.

Yeah, I could see Vin in the role. Not my first choice but he'd handle it well.

Exactly Savage!!

People are making choices because of physique or "persona". This is not how they do it at Marvel. The only semi-exception is Chris Helmsworth, and even he had to bulk up considerably for the role. And he was a relative unknown. And hes actually a pretty good actor. Plus thor is sort of the ultimate "beefcake" character so the casting of a tall handsome blonde guy was required (which is why Alex Skarsgaards name was thrown around). Even then, it was his acting that got him the job, as Hollywood is filled with beefcake types.

Aging action stars and ex-wrestlers (The Rock is best of this type to be fair) arent getting gigs from Marvel. Period. Acclaimed character actors, young up and coming serious thespians, and charismatic veteran actors are what Marvel is looking for.

They're also not looking for talented divas like Ed Norton. And again, RDJ is the exception to this because he essentially WAS Tony Stark even before taking the role.

If there's a role where an aging action star is what is called for, they'll cast an aging action star.

For every Robert Downey Jr they cast a Chris Evans.

Don't get me wrong, I love Evans, but he doesn't exactly have Oscar pedigree behind him. He's hugely charismatic, athletic, and a fun screen presence.

Just like, oh I don't know, The Rock

In that case I am really at a loss for whom should play Drax. I figured stoic and muscular would be easy to cast but there really aren't that many talented beefy dudes. And I don't mean Chris Evans or Gerard Butler beefy either but...huge guys. That's required for someone like Drax the destroyer. He's a tall bruiser. There are guys you can get away with being smaller for the movie version and guys who stop being that character once that happens. It's why Vinnie Jones had to wear a body suit for Juggernaut and all people did was complain about that (I loved it).

With that said, Gerard Butler is as close as it gets for me. Guys like Jason Mamoa are about as good as Lundgren or Michael Jai white to me. I wouldn't even put him in Diesel or The Rock's league.

I think The Rock is a better actor than Butler :jedi

And I also want to keep Terry Crews in the discussion. Terry Crews is awesome.

He is. I would have no objections to him being in the movie. This is something we actually need a muscular action star for. Not a Jake Gylenhaal, not a Guy Pierce, we need a bonafide ass kicker. Someone who we'll believe deserves the name Drax: The Destroyer. All the steroids in the world isn't going to make me believe that about someone like Ethan Hunt or Matt Damon or Jeremy Renner. Not unless they're providing the voice for a CGI character or a body double or something.

With all that said, I do throw in the 6'2 Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. You may know him as Heavy Duty from "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra".

He co-starred with The Rock in "Faster" and is actually pretty similar in size, even though a little shorter.

Kevin Grevioux of "Underworld" is another good choice in my opinion.

I like Vin Diesel. I may be a little biased since he was in the greatest animated movie of all time, the Iron Giant, but I think he's a decent actor. Anyways, I don't really know the characters in this at all so I have no clue who I think would fit the part. All these names brought up IMO could work, if Draxx is just this tough guy action hero stereotype. But I don't know the character, so my opinion could easily change.

Drax is basically Scorpion from Mortal Kombat. His entire existence is based on getting Revenge on Thanos.
