Guillermo del Toro's The Strain coming to FX - Part 1

Man...**** Zach!
My sentiments exactly. There isn't any hope for this kid. I found this actor's portrayal of Zach unlikable from the moment he was introduced this season. Most of his screen time was of him whining about his mommy to Eph, who's isn't his mother anymore but a vampire. It was very reprehensible how he didn't show any empathy or even guilt for getting [BLACKOUT]Nora killed. She died trying to protect his worthless butt. Not to mention him distracting Nora from finishing off his vamp mother, who then infected her. So he's directly responsible for Nora's death.[/BLACKOUT] The writers made a huge mistake killing off one of the stronger characters of the show all b/c the most annoying character wanted to be with his vamp mom. Maybe Zach wants to get turned, but you won't hear me complaining if that happens. He asked for it.

Despite that moment, which I believe the writing for season 3 will suffer for it, I thought it was an otherwise solid season finale.

I also found it funny that the writers remembered Zach had asthma in the season finale after going most of the season without his inhaler.

Zach is the worst character ever. What the hell were the writers thinking?! (They weren't.)

The writers are trying to defend him as if there were any defense. I don't hate the actor like some people do, the kid is just playing the part given to him but the writing of the character is terrible.

The writers are tying to defend themselves :cwink:

An ok final. Nice touch at the end when Palmer kept a souvenir of his lover as Setrakian did.
About the kid, I share everyone opinion but it was clear he wasn't going to die, he must stay alive to give Eph motivation.
The slaughterhouse ! "yes, it comes from an European model" /shiver.

I actually hate Zack. I've never wanted anyone to die so much in a tv series before.

Both, really. The interviewer asked specifically about how people hated the character/actor and they tried to defend that.

Zach makes Carl from The Walking Dead and Ollie from Game Of Thrones look good.

I guess Dutch is taking
Nora's
role in the books.

I'm really tired of Eichhorst slithering away.
Eichhorst is a interesting villain but it is getting a little repetitive that he manages to escape without any major injuries. If the writers really wanted to put a shock twist in the episode they should of had Quinlan kill him off or seriously maim him.

Coco going full Lady MacBeath felt random. The Palmer and Coco romance was boring.

And Coco felt like she was leading toward some obviously hidden agenda, like she was a spy for someone. Instead she just genuinely loved this dottering old man who was literally old enough to be her grandfather.

Then pushed him into a position that gets her turned and killed.

I was surprised by what happened with Nora, and hopefully it pays off with Eph. I liked everything else about the finale though for the most part.

Ugh, the whole time they gave Coco and enigmatic edge that I was hoping would be pay-off for putting up with the gross scenes with Palmer, instead she just gets sucked to death as an "I'm the real big bad" exclamation point from the Blade guy.

As for what they did with Nora, terrible choice, I don't even follow the books but she has become one of the best characters in the show and everything regarding Zach makes him stupider and stupider by the episode, I don't care about his age, even the dumbest kid would realize that ain't his Mom anymore. :whatever:

I like [BLACKOUT]Dutch[/BLACKOUT] for the most part but I agree that it doesn't feel right if [BLACKOUT]she is becomes the new female lead[/BLACKOUT]. Anyway, I highly doubt [BLACKOUT]she will be.[/BLACKOUT]... They'd probably get a new one to a play a new character.

I like Dutch but regardless of whether she becomes the female lead, the show needs an injection of female characters.

I hate most thinkpieces, but I'm shocked they're aren't any about the treatment of female characters on this show. The writers really did them dirty this year where it does seem suspect. The Dutch/Fet/Nikki love trangle was stupid, Coco was a blind idiot to evil/creepy old dudes, and what they did to Nora was terrible. Ugh.

The councilwoman balanced it out, sort of.

Agreed.

I was surprised too. I would've thought there would've been hundreds already. I guess it's because the show is not popular enough?

What else can we expect from season three?

Cuse: We are very excited to do more with the Justine Feraldo character, played by Samantha Mathis. She’s going to be a big part of season three. We really like the flashback stories. You’ll definitely see more of those. Also the Quinlan storyline is something which we’ll be seeing a lot of in season three. You saw one little bit of a flashback story for him last year. There is definitely more to tell there.

Hogan: He’s a really, really fun character to write. We’ve had a lot of fun teasing out the mystery. Certain questions will be answered and he’ll be an integral part of the story going ahead. We have the Occido Lumen. Setrakian has been working very hard to get that. So that opens up a lot of possibilities. At the same time, it’s going to have the potential to attract a lot of unwanted attention from the other side, too. We definitely won’t see our gang necessarily living and working out of the same place, at least at the start of the season – although we love Fet’s warehouse as a home base. The set is just incredible and you can do a lot of things with it. So we’re going to come up with some interesting things to do in that same structure. But I do think the feel of the show in season three is going to be different. Not radically different, but we are going to be advancing the story faster. And getting more of a world view. We are going to [see how this plague is affecting the world.] I think it will speed up the storytelling even more. There might be some more time jumps so we really get a sense of things falling in the world situation, going into a serious collapse.

Cuse: And we’re only doing 10 episodes for season three, which is also going to really add a lot of propulsion to the narrative.

What are you most excited about for next season?

Cuse: For me it would be the ongoing evolution of our strigoi. The older they get, the more confident they are. As time goes on they become more effective and more deadly. I think one of the problems we dealt with is we’ve done two seasons and 26 episodes across a few years of television time, when in fact, really, we’re only a couple of weeks into this vampire apocalypse. So I think there’s a sense that we’re much further down the road than we are, when this really is kind of a newly evolving phenomenon. We’re going to drop a little deeper into that this year. So, to me, that kind of changes up the forces of antagonism in ways that I think are going to be super cool.

Hogan: As difficult as it was, I feel like the death of Nora has kind of emboldened us. And I think what I’m most excited about looking at next season is that everything is really up for grabs. I would say there’s no reason to assume that you would need to wait until the last episode of the season for something really big to happen. So I’m excited for the surprises to come.

I hope that little brat, Zach, gets turned by his vamp-mom and then Eph gets to off them both and brat-boy can be with his undead mom forever... and I'm pissed that Nora had to die, thanks again, to that little s**t... and Dutch needs a good solid kick up her ass as a wake-up call... and if Fet gives her another chance after being treated like s**t from her, ESPECIALLY after him rescuing her, then HE'S just a much a moron as she is... and I'm so glad that conniving b**ch, Coco, bought it, as well... her smug, know-it-all attitude was another thing that pissed me off...

I love Guillermo del Toro's take on vampires, it's downright terrifying and very intriguing. The Master, the Ancients and Quinlan and Eichhorst all are fantastic. I also really enjoy the scenes that take place throughout history. I very much enjoy the cinematography, the music and the overall mood. But the clunky writing and the meandering pacing are holding me back from truly enjoying The Strain, especially in season 2. It started off good and kind of went off course and got back on track with the finale. Hopefully season 3 finds it's footing.

Their plans for season 3 seems very promising. I think it's great they want to change it up next season so it won't become trite. Surprised FX is ordering 10 episodes instead of 13 b/c I never thought the show dragged with filler episodes, but now it'll be even more tightened.

They better not change anything to do with Quinlan or the final battle at the end from the books, they were some of my favourite parts. I haven't got to the episode where they kill Nora yet but just hearing it on here pissed me off.

He's worse than Andrea or Lori from The Walking Dead in terms of getting his group into dangerous situations.

Everyone involved with the production seems pretty in love with Quinlan (naturally) so I think if anything, they'd just expand on his material and flashbacks rather than alter anything majorly.

I hope so, he was involved in most of the best parts in the books so they better not change it. Nora was involved in a lot of them as well though which makes me worry.

I have a feeling that the hate towards Zach is only going to grow. Now that The Master has him it might be a way to get Eph to betray his friends.

I haven't read the books so just my own speculation.

Not read the books either but the writers have already made some major deviations from the books so what happened in them is not necessarily going to happen in this series.
