Fantasy Guy Ritchie Directing Disney's Aladdin

As was the live action versions of every living object in Beauty and the Beast. Yet they still did it. Hell, about 95% of the live action Jungle Book was uncanny valley horror to me but it still made bank.

Really? I thought Jungle Book escaped the valley. Though being live action did make it much more intense. Shere Khan is going to give a lot of kids nightmares.

I haven't seen Beauty and the Beast.

I'm curious to see what they'll do with Genie.

I feel like the route they went with Jim Carrey in The Mask may be the route they go, but just give him kind of a constant luminescent glow and the occasional wacky cartoon physics.

At first I thought the will smith idea was a bit meh but actually I think it's clever casting! He's suitably goofy and imaginative and he can sing! Plus, the star power wouldn't hurt and he's suitably different from Robin that I wouldn't feel sad every time I saw him.

Blue genie is an obligation at this point. I wonder how much CGI will be used on him.

I imagine it will be a wholly computer generated character whose face will resemble Will Smith's.

I think that's pretty inspired casting, actually. He's got the right kind of energy and range to do justice to what Robin did with the character, and this casting also puts the take in line with more recent (Broadway) interpretations of the Genie.

Will is interesting not sure how I feel about it to be honest. This did make me think that Eddie Murphy could've been perfect.

I have a feeling that Disney is going to keep Ritchie on a very short leash for this, especially if King Arthur becomes the colossal bomb it looks to be.

And it looks as if they're still deciding what direction to take. I think the biggest problem is the Genie - that role belonged to Robin Williams so completely that they really can't make the character that way again without making it look like they're trying to copy a performance that can't be copied.

I suspect they saw Ritchie's work in King Arthur, as the character's arc is very similar to Aladdin's.
