Fantasy Guy Ritchie Directing Disney's Aladdin

So did Genie lose his powers in the end?
Yes. I mean, that's how I took it. He didn't in the original animation which never quite made sense to me... although freedom doesn't necessarily mean no powers I guess. Anyway, I assumed he lost his powers and became human as that was his desire

I thought it was okay when I was watching it but when the credits started rolling, I felt a bit disappointed and not satisfied. I liked Will Smith in a couple of films but he was so flat and unfunny as the Genie, especially his last shot before the credits roll. So meh. The musical numbers were okay but a lot of it just felt flat. I can't understand why A Whole New World was so dimly lit, yeah it was supposed to be nighttime but they could have added some fire torches in the city or fireworks. Its definitely one of those things that the movie couldn't come close to the original. The talking sand tiger scenes were also dimly lit, in the animated film, Jafar's men were holding torches but in the movie, nope, and those desert scenes looked so dark in the evening. I wasn't really blown away by the set pieces and locations. I didn't like the pink walls and the exterior of the Agrabah temple could have been more beautiful, like I was expecting something that looks similar to the Taj Mahal. Aladdin and Jasmine were okay but the actors didn't give me zomg they were so good kind of reaction. I liked that they made things different similar to Cinderella and the Jungle Book without dramatically changing the story (unlike Maleficent) but eh. Its not something I would watch again in a theater and would just watch it on Disney + when I have some spare time. I would give it a B but the more I think about it, I would give it a B-.

This was really flat. If anything even more rote and uninspired than Beauty and the Beast and just like watching an expensive cosplay, especially with the Aladdin and Jafar actors who had absolutely zero charisma or screen presence.

Will Smith is definitely no Robin Williams.

The whole thing just feels flat with no energy. One big meh.

I thought Mena was okay as Aladdin, but I also thought he was trying really hard to mimic the animation's expressions in certain scenes. Jafar was by far THE WORST thing in this film. They took one of Disney's most iconic villains and made him so bland. I liked Will Smith and Naomi, though.

I find it funny that Numan Acar as the captain of the guard looks more "Jafar" than Jafar.

I'd assume majority are magical "creatures" as opposed to those like Jafar who make themselves Genies.

Disney likes their main villains hot. Go figure.

I thought it was better than the reviews are making it out to be. I'd rate it similar to Beauty and the Beast in that it in no way touches the greatness of the original but it has its own charm. I will say that Will Smith did Genie justice. He's no Robin Williams, but he's probably one of the few people that audiences could accept in the role, with the other probably being Dwayne Johnson. I also really liked Naomi Scott and Mena Massoud. I didn't even think Jafar was all that bad either, but I would have preferred if they
kept in his version of "Prince Ali" while banishing Aladdin and it also would have been cool to see him turn into a giant snake at the end.

Now it's all eyes on Favreau for The Lion King, which is probably the last of these live action Disney remakes that I'm really going to put any stake in.

After watching this I'm no longer concerned for the Chiwetel/Irons Scar outcry. People were heavily criticizing Will Smith when the trailers came out. But once the movie actually comes out I think people will actually enjoy Chiwetel's take on Scar.

I don't think the trailers did Aladdin justice

Hopefully the upcoming Lion King trailers will

I just got back from seeing this. While I enjoyed bits and pieces of the second act, I found everything else ranging from meh to bad. A very strange movie going experience. Will Smith was the saving grace, though I did enjoy Naomi Scott (her solo song could've been better handled but for reasons out of her control).

I enjoyed it. There was some potential for greatness in there but it turns out to be just fine in the end. I think Guy should have let Mena dance more. He was good enough but dude really sprung to life once the dancing or action started.

Audience score is pretty impressive 94%

Verified (The percentage of users the site confirmed bought tickets for this movie who rated it 3.5 stars or higher)
  • Average Rating: 4.6
  • Total Count: 21,187

All Audience
  • Average Rating: 4.5

And it's not dropping like the case of some other movies on this site where some people jumped in with positive reviews before the movie was released for public view.

Maybe it will sell more tickets than Dumbo did.

Cool. I feel bad for the crew of Dumbo.

To be fair to Dumbo, Dumbo's never had an audience as wide as Aladdin's. I frankly would have been surprised if Dumbo had outgrossed Aladdin. But even on that front, Dumbo definitely under performed. I find that to be kind of a shame because Dumbo exceeded my expectations. I went in hoping for the best and walked out actually having enjoyed the movie (though it had some flaws). But by that same token, we never were really looking at a Dumbo 2 or anything, so does that ultimately matter? Disney is making all the money this year regardless.
