Fantasy Guy Ritchie Directing Disney's Aladdin

I don't think anything in the 2010 Alice was like the animated version. It seemed to me to be a completely different movie with no ties to the cartoon one.

Mena Massoud speaks out about not getting any auditions since "Aladdin" premiered

'Aladdin' star Mena Massoud says he hasn't 'had a single audition' since film came out

Mena Massoud, the 28-year-old, Egypt-born star of Disney’s billion-dollar-earning Aladdin, still can’t seem to catch a break.

In a new interview with The Daily Beast in promotion of his role on the Hulu series Reprisal, Massoud revealed that he hasn’t landed an audition in Hollywood since headlining the movie that, to date, has made $1.05 billion for Walt Disney.

I’d say he was pretty good. Hell if Sam Worthington’s bland ass was getting big projects for a few years after Avatar. Mena Massoud should at least be getting an audition...

Wasn’t his performance considered one of the weaker ones?
I thought he was alright, the issue was that like everyone else in the movie save for Naomi Scott in a few scenes, Will Smith stole the show from him.

The whole cast was weak except maybe Naomi Scott. Will Smith I guess was “okay” but even he felt like this weak replacement.

if its true we know why. hollywood executives dont think there is a market with that kind of skin tone(with women its different). hollywood already has a problem with asians. After you are in a blockbuster you get offers and auditions just because of the movie that made a huge profit. its automatic. doesnt matter if your performance was bad.

Eh, Dev Patel seems to have been doing alright post Slumdog Millionaire.

You know when I first saw the article yesterday, I thought: Maybe he should go into TV because that seems to be a place where woman and POCs are treated better. But then I see he has a HULU show coming out. As much as it's not as sexy as being in a bunch of big studio films. That might just be the grind. Kill it in a good TV show and see where that takes you.

Aladdin made 1 billion at the BO...if he were your average day white actor....he'd had been sought after to a degree.
Yeah it's BS to try and say: "Well he wasn't that good in the movie" as a reason why. There are far worst actors that have starred in or been the titular character in lower grossing movies that are given more of a push by Hollywood. And it's not like he's an ugly dude or we hear rumors of misbehavior

Exactly.

I mean not even called in for an audition and it's not like he missed his time and the movie had been out for years? It just came out and you're not getting called in. If that's true, that's crazy.

I mean that's kinda: "Well we have one black person working here so we can't be racist" or "This one girl is doing well for herself so there's no sexism at this company" kinda thinking.
And Patel has mostly been quiet in the major studio system (unless you count Fox Searchlight).
If you were going to give an example you should've used Rami Malek who's Egyptian like Mena is.

I doubt Malek would have gotten a gig as a Bond villain if it wasn't for the boost from his Oscar win for Bohemian Rhapsody.

Ok...I'm not doubting that so not sure why I'm quoted. I'm saying he's a better example of someone who is successful people like to throw in the bucket of "Middle Eastern."
Even before MR. Robot and Bohemian Rhapsody he had more decent profile stuff compared to Dev Patel

The point is being in a blockbuster doesn’t guarantee follow ups unless you deliver the goods. And Dev Patel was cast in The Last Airbender right after Slumdog which was primed as a big blockbuster at the time.

Yes, there’s outliers but Hayden Christensen, Alden Ehrenreich, Brandon Routhe all petered out, at least in terms of blockbuster follow up roles.

No one said blockbuster guarantees follow ups. What we're saying there are a lot of other actors who were in the same position or even worse position as Mena and given much more opportunities. You said "there's outliers" but then named only named 3 people that proved your point. If the outliers are more than the "provens" or whatever, then maybe your point doesn't stand. And even in your examples: I'll give you Routh, but with Ehrenreich it's way too early to tell because his disappointment only came last year and Christensen got a few chances before his career went down. Mena is saying that's he's not even given a chance. I can't think of many or even any actors who are pretty conventionally attractive who were not given at least a chance at Hollywood stardom after being the lead a hit movie like Aladdin. Even if they weren't the best part in the movie.
Like the dude who played Muse the main Somali pirate in Captain Phillips, Barkhad Abdi. I get why he never broke out despite giving a great performance and being award nominated. Not to be mean, but he's not conventionally attractive (bad teeth, odd shaped head, bad hairline) and he has a very thick Somali accent that is probably very hard to get rid of. Or the woman who played Precious, Gabourey Sidibe. Again, not to be ****ed up...but I get why Hollywood never gave her a major push even though she was the lead in a major award contender. I remember when Vanity Fair or whoever did their Hollywood issue that year they didn't even feature her despite her being a young actress nominated for an Oscar.
But Mena? It's weird that he hasn't even been able to get an audition

Josh Harnett, Armie Hammer, Channing Tatum, Chris Evans, Ryan Reynolds, Sam Worthington, Alex Pettyfer, Zac Efron, Taylor Kitsch to name a few are/were young and upcoming actors given multiple shots at Hollywood/major success despite: a) starring in one or more bombs/box office disappointments early in their theatrical career b) being singled out as giving bad performances in one or more movies c) been in a few critically panned movies early on, d) had behavioral issues, or e) all/some of the above. They at least got a few shots, despite all their dings

And again a lot of the actors I listed are good to great actors, but Hollywood/the major studio system doesn't care much about who's a great actor unless it can make them money.

One thing I'm curious about is if Mena isn't given TV auditions. That would be something.

He's only got a tv audition and that show is coming out soon. And he's barely in the trailer.
