That would be pretty cool, but I fear that he will draw a lot of attention onto himself, which violates the premise of the Shield being a pack of equals.

If they get a third member, it will be two established guys who could main event a PPV, and a brand new guy with no WWE history or fan knowledge. It would HAVE to be someone who could steal as much shine as possible.

I would love to see Prince Devitt in The Shield, but I know I'm alone in that.

Devitt wouldn't be bad but I'd go with Neville over him. I'm against Zayn joining. That's like Sting joining The Horsemen. It sounds so awkward.

Stealing shine is one thing, but you don't want someone to be seen as taking over (think about the Rock and the Nation of Domination, for instance).

In an alternative reality scenario, AJ Styles would have been a great 3rd Shield member. The fans know who he is, but it wouldn't become the AJ Styles show.

JTG was released? I wonder what they'll do with his dedicated "still has a job" site. I'm surprised McIntyre was released. I thought they were going to repackage him.

The dirts have said that about Drew for like three years.

Except that AJ Styles could never main event a WWE PPV. The guy is talented, but it isn't like he's going to suddenly figure out what a microphone is. WWE thinks so little of him that they haven't even signed him to NXT, because they know that he has only so much growth potential. If they ad someone to Shield, it has to be someone who can be a main eventer for the company (like Rollins, Reigns and Ambrose all have the potential to be).

Personally, I think Corey Graves has potential...but man, I Think I'd prefer for WWE to drop Viktor from The Ascension, who I think sucks, and add Corey in as his replacement (though he has big potential as a solo act, so maybe that's a waste).

Tyler Breeze has potential, but I'm not sure how he'd fit with them.

Leo Kruger would have fit prior to changing gimmicks.

Adrian Neville just screams "Indie Wrestler Number 3" to me.

Mojo Rawley absolutely sucks.

Sami Zayn wouldn't fit.

Honestly...the first two names that come to mind are Johnny Curtis (Fandango) or Brad Maddox...both of whom could argue that they were the very best indie talent who WWE would only put on tv as referees and comedy acts...and that aint justice. Heck, Curtis has a rightful claim to a world title shot and has been denied for years. Though, I will admit that it would take a money promo and a lot of luck to get either of them over as legit talents.

The only existing WWE character that can slip easily into the Shield is CM Punk, but that's obviously not happening.

Curtis has no claim to a world title shot. He won a tag team title shot, and got it on NXT against Team Hell No.

I'm not entirely sure how these contracts work, but I'm guessing that if Punk is sitting at home in Chicago, he's not being paid. So it's a moot point whether he's released or not, because his pay isn't showing up in the company's earnings as an expense.

With the end of the fiscal quarter coming up, dumping all these salaries might help the WWE issue a better-looking "forward guidance" (where the company announces what they expect their future profits to look like) and maybe bump up the stock price, and help Vince get back some of his net worth.

I read that Punk was still getting his royalty cheques as Vince listed him as on sabbatical.

From what I read today, Vince is planning on renewing Punk's contract due to a clause in all contracts that they can be automatically renewed. Vince did this with Mysterio because of all the time he missed due to injuries and he feels that Rey "owes" the company appearances, hence the renewal. The thought process is that he will do the same with Punk so he can't sign anywhere else but Punk is not obligated to return to work.

Interesting, If Punk is keen to stay retired I guess that's money for nothing and I imagine the share holders wont be happy as his contract is the second biggest in the company.

I don't know how it is internationally, but it's known as Reserve/Retired in American pro sports.

I think the only thing he can get is merchandising if he's not making appearances.

Seriously guys...WWE pays their talent even if they aren't wrestling. While this is a rare case of a guy taking time off without injury or permission, I doubt that WWE would stop paying him his downside guarantee and risk the legal issues that arise from that, considering that they kept paying every other wrestler their downside. WWE likely would rather keep Punk under contract than have him roaming free (at the moment), so they are willing to pay his downside and make money off of his still strong merch sales. Because he has not wrestled for a long time, they COULD tack on some extra time to his contract, but I'm sure that they care enough to do that.

But how does this make room? Other than Jinder and Drew, none of the other men were actually being used, and even they were just background characters to Heath Slater, who will likely still take up a jobber segment on the show. So, how does this free up a spot for anyone other than one new Diva in place of Aksana?

Yeah, seems kinda suspicious that 1/3 of 3MB survived the ax.
I suggested this a coupla days ago in this thread, but now I think it may come to pass: Slater gets recruited to The Real Americans; the tag team starts feuding with Rusev; the "USA, USA" chants combine with "WE THE PEOPLE" enough to give Colter & Company a face turn.

While, on the surface, not my top choice, it makes sense considering that he was a 1 man southern rock band, and those types are generally very pro America, God and Country types.

Rumor has it Wade Barrett called up all the recently released superstars to tell them they were released.
