well seeing as the rumoured miss quinn cameo in TDK was nothing more than a rumour, i was rereading some of the posts with people stating there dislike for the character, maybe it was just for the film. so i put it to you

should a character such as harley quinn be linked to the joker, does she help the character or hinder him, do fans as a whole like her or did paul dini make a mistake in bringing a one off henchwoman to the fore front

On Batman, Paul Dini doesn't make mistakes.

I have to agree. I love Harely's character really. I think she brings an interesting dynamic to The Joker's character. Not only is he a crazy homocidal clown. He's also kind of charming in an odd way.

Yes, Harley Quinn works as a character. I don't see how she could hinder the Joker in any way. He isn't affiliated with her in all of his stories. Harley often works well solo, too.

She's not a straight up villain. Just deluded and misguided. And she does bring a very interesting dynamic to the Joker. Their relationship has had some really creepy moments as well as some hilarious ones.

I've never liked the character I tolerate her but I've always found her to be obnoxiously written. I thought that would change when she got introduced to the comics but it was just more or less reinforced. I don't think I'll ever be a Harley Quinn fan.

I love Harely. If anything I think it adds more to Joker's character because you get to see how he acts when he's in a relationship. And like a previous poster said, it's creepy and hilarious at times. I love Harley.

she works best when she's fighting with Joker of course. Recently Dini 'reformed' her in his Detective run, will be interesting to see where that goes.

I want to see more Harley Quinn in comics and treated as a real character not just a sidekick or walking gag. Pity her series was kinda lame too. A good start would be allowing her costume to change, just allow some general development.

I also like that recently she was partnering with Holly Robinson, hanging with Poison Ivy probably isn't so healthy for her ha ha

I'd have to say Harley Quinn works well as a character. Like others have said you get to see the Joker in an ongoing relationship, which is a side to the character we've never seen before. I love the whole abusive man and battered woman side they showed to Harley, which is semi realistic. Some men treat women like pigs, but the women like Harley, were convinced "they love me really". It's an interesting dynamic that worked particularly well when she teamed up with Poison Ivy who took on the role of the stronger, independent female character who wouldn't put up with that kind of crap "Why'd you put up with that clown?" Great stuff because it bore resemblence to real life.

Plus like others have said if you don't like the Harley/Joker relationship, there are plenty of stories featuring both characters solo.

I know you're a Poison Ivy fan Nepenthes. What did you think of the Harley and Ivy book that came out a few months ago?

Harley & Ivy? It's silly and dumb and pretty hilarious in parts :D. Overall it's way better than i thought it would be, I'm was glad i gave it a chance and bought it when I was cashed up (otherwise I probably wouldn't have). There's nothing serious or thoughtful about it all, just a bunch of zany hijinks. Harley you gotta love her ha ha. The main four issues are all self contained, there's no arc, as for extras the painted Judd Winnick story Love on the Lam is pretty lame but there's also a B&W Dini short originally from Gotham Knights, colored for the tpb, that's in the same vein as the main issues. overall it's pretty similar to Mad Love in tone but even more slapstick, if that's the right word. beatiful animation style art and colours

This. I don't think it's just Harley that can't be without Joker, he himself might fight it but there's some sort of love there for Harley.

That and her interactions with Ivy work dandy for me!

Thanks for the insight. None of my very male and very geeky friends would admit to reading it. ;)

she works as a character. she brings the dysfunctional into her and Joker's relationship. that's why it's so great. it's like Lucy and Ricky. she's great.

I thought the guys who did Batman TAS did an amazing job in not only creating a character like Quinn, but giving Clay Face and Mr.Freeze such a better story, and even humanity.

Harley works great with Mr. J. That said I don't think I would want her in a movie.

I'd like to see her retconned out of everything

That's a really good point. I'm not sure how well Harley would work in a movie. She's a great comic book character, all zany and in a bright coloured spandex costume, but I think you'd have to lose what made her a great character in order to make her more movie friendly. Otherwise you'd end up with the Batman franchise equivalent to Jar Jar Binks on the big screen. I haven't seen any episodes of Birds Of Prey, but I'm told she was the main villain in that series and the live action version of her pretty much sucked.

Some comic book characters don't suit the movies unfortunately.
