Has the MCU peaked?

Out of the 13 phase 4 projects (movies/films) thus far, without naming them, how many would you say are "Great" "Good" "Average" "Bad"?

I got...
1- great
3- good
4- average
5- bad

At this moment in time, the MCU might not have peaked, but it's definitely overrated in terms of quality.

4 - Great
4 - Good
4 - Average
1 - Bad

So the takeaway I have is it's all subjective.

Let's also not forget that nearly every Phase 4 project was negatively affected by the pandemic and its ever changing presence and regulations around it. All the way from the first project to release to the most recent one. And by that I don't just mean box office, but also development.

  • According to Matt Shakman Wandavision suffered major delays due to the pandemic so that they finished the final episode barely two weeks before it released which had caused them to change how many episodes they would air per week. A lot of VFX for the final episode was unfinished and as such they had to cut out a bunch of scenes, in particular with Monica, Billy & Tommy, Darcy and Señor Scratchy
  • For Falcon & The Winter Soldier there was the whole supposed pandemic plot that has supposedly been removed.
  • Eric Martin has said a bunch of TVA scenes were cut from Loki due to covid time constraints
  • What If? lost the whole Gamora episode that was referenced again in the finale due to pandemic limitations.
  • For Spider-Man No Way Home there were a whole bunch of scenes where it seemed like characters weren't actually together. It's not confirmed but I think Rhys Ifans and Thomas Hayden Church not being physically available could've been at least partly due to travel restrictions. Also a bunch of awkward shots to get around having crowds like Flash being composited into a party, Flash walking through an empty CG version of New York, etc.
  • A costume designer for Multiverse of Madness has said that the Illuminati scenes were a big hassle due to travel bans making it very uncertain who they could get for the scene. A bunch of the actors filmed their scenes separately. Due to travel bans several actors including Patrick Stewart couldn't come to set so had to film elsewhere (also supported by Elizabeth Olsen saying in interviews that she never met some of the Illuminati cast members). Because they only knew for sure who they had for the Illuminati at the last moment and some filmed in a different place, they couldn't properly design and fit all the costumes and as such had to do a bunch of additional CGI (I suspect a lot on Black Bolt and Reed since their costumes looked pretty CG).
  • Bisha K. Ali has said that a lot is missing from Ms. Marvel as a consequence of limited time and situational changes due to covid and that she wishes they could've been able to show more of what they had. Most importantly the character development of the Clandestine characters and more stuff about the Noor dimension and Red Daggers.
  • We know there were issues after Letitia Wright got injured and had to go to the hospital in the UK with travel restrictions and vaccine mandates that might affect the film.
And there's probably a whole bunch of issues we haven't heard about.

I forgot about Falcon and Winter Soldier also man that was a mixed bag at best. I enjoyed some of it but looking back some of it was pretty poor.

I don't think I've seen anything particularly bad in Phase 4. It was just overall not as good as Phase 3.

But WandaVision and No Way Home are among my absolute favorites in any Phase.

Thor dropped 68% this weekend. I knew the drop would be bad but not that bad. There is literally no competition this weekend at all.

I will say…in general, I have enjoyed the movies much more than the Disney+ shows. I didn’t outright hate the shows, at worst they were pretty “meh” to me, take it or leave it. With the movies though, I found Black Widow and Eternals pretty enjoyable (even if they are lower tier movies of the greater MCU).

Also, I don’t think the MCU has peaked. It is way too early to say anything. This thread question is basically asking you to compare the last year and a half of content to the prior 12 years worth of content. We’ve seen the beginning, middle, and end of the Infinity Stone saga. I don’t know how you can compare Phase IV (that we’re still in the middle of) to something we have seen that’s complete. Doesn’t seem fair.

You mean Marcel the Shell with shoes on isn't packing the theaters?

They put out more content that I have time to keep up with between all the movies and TV shows. I mean, it wasn't easy before when there was no Disney+ (though there still was stuff like Agent Carter and Agents of Shield), and now it's beyond that. The last Dr. Strange is even heavily tied to that one TV show on Disney+ more than I would have liked, to the detriment of a certain character in the movie. They expect you to not only watch all the movies now to keep up, but all the TV shows too.

Not every bad decision that was made, was because of the pandemic…

The last two films have underwhelmed (big time when it comes to L&T IMO) but the stuff they put out on Disney + has been consistently great. Shang-Chi was awesome, No Way Home absolutely stellar, Eternals didn’t 100% succeed but was a nice break from the formula and Black Widow was solid despite being out of place in Phase 4. They’ve also introduced a bunch of amazing new characters (Shang-Chi, Xialing, Yelena, Kate, Steven/Marc and Kamala …) that are going to be major players going forward and have the potential to carry great stories in the future.

This new era of the MCU is just getting started and even though some stuff has been absolutely rough around the edges, I think it’s unfair to compare it to a Phase 3 they basically had 10 years to work out and polish. Once the overarching narrative(s) gets clearer and stuff like Covid gets out of the way of productions and things start operating more seamlessly again I feel that those kinks will work themselves out.

The early days of the MCU were rocky at times too and it wasn’t quite the smooth sailing towards The Avengers people make it out to be in retrospect (and that was with a fraction of the content they put out today).

So no I don’t think the MCU has peaked. Not one bit.

The MCU had peaked with Endgame. That’s because those characters played by those actors will never have that kind of buildup again (Spider-Man notwithstanding as that was more the Endgame of Sony Spider-Man movies).

All these new characters are not on the level of those, and with TV you’ve now broke off those who watch and those who don’t. And since most of the shows have been mediocre (except for WandaVision and Loki), there’s no powerhouse show that’s on the level of something like Stranger Things with newcomers watching.

I think the MCU is still big of of course, but it won’t be the end all be all that they were before. Even this year we’ve had so much content from them, but it’s not driving the conversion anymore with movies or tv.

They’ve also introduced a bunch of amazing new characters (Shang-Chi, Xialing, Yelena, Kate, Steven/Marc and Kamala …)
I'm excited for She-Hulk too.:hrt:

Tatiana is so great.

I don’t know if the MCU has peaked.

I do think Phase 4 takes the prize for the worst Phase of the MCU.

Say what you will about Phases 1 and 2, but both those Phases either had one or more of the following: A sense of freshness, a sense of momentum to compensate for a film’s mediocrity, and 1 or 2 genuinely good movies.

Phase 4 only has one of those so far, IMO. And even then, the one good movie they do have solidly relies on characters and nostalgia for films the MCU weren’t responsible for.

And then you have the TV shows…most of them are forgettable. That’s become even more apparent when you have shows like “Barry”, “Better Call Saul”, and “Stranger Things” running around the same time as some of these Disney + shows. I can’t help but think they’re going to water down Daredevil and make some people regret that they wanted a continuation. I hope I’m wrong.

I don't think it has peak they still have some characters and stories they can produce excitement for. I think the pacing has peaked, I am into the slow burn and anticipation but the shows have killed the pacing and made MCU a year around thing now. At least for me not every show seems watchable so I can focus on movies and if a show does have a connection I will watch.

This is where that Marvel Legends show will help. They do character recaps if they’re going to be in an upcoming movie or show. You don’t need to even watch the show, just watch the recap of that character’s journey in the MCU.

Phae 4 is so bad because it looks like they run out of inspiration and most directors dont really get alot of freedom from the bosses.

Zhao, Waititi, Raimi and Coogler pretty clearly had a lot of freedom on their phase iv movies. Probably moreso than literally any MCU film in phases I, II, or III.
WandaVision, Werewolf by Night and She Hulk also seems to have more freedom to do something different than any of the Infinity Saga project.
