Welling didn't want the Superman role on the big screen becuase he didn't want to be typecast as Superman alas Christopher Reeve & Toby Maguire(Spiderman). But when Superman Returns came out, & made over $100 million but yet Brandon Routh isn't even mentioned often as Superman/Clark Kent, its always Welling! People want to see him in the suit on the small screen more than Routh on the big screen. And I'm not SR's bashing but the tension between Lex & Clark on tv has been better than in the movie. He's been offered a few roles on movies and has taken them.........but he can't escape the Superman tag on him. So.......has he been typecast in your opinion? And PLEASE! No bashing.
P.S.-I made a mistake in the poll. :( I meant to say: yeah whether he likes it or not he's this generations Superman & Nah, he'll eventually fly out of the cape. Sorry! :(

Yeah, I think he has. Almost as much as Haydenson is type cast as Anakin.

Yeah Welling is Superman. And Routh is the guy that played Superman.

I don't udnderstand what the thread starter is baseing his or her question on.

It really depends on what he does after Smallville ends. If he keeps gettting ****ty roles, then he will be only remembered as Clark Kent, but if he gets the great roles he can get away from being typecast.

Welling will always be remebred as the guy who played young clark Kent. He may get good roles, but he stil will be remebered more so for Smallville.

No he is being type cast as Clark Kent you silly goose.

that's not correct, but I'm just too tired to explain it once again...

BTW when the heck did TM get typecast as Spider-man?

I wonder if he is. What movies has he been that doesn't have anything to do with smallville? cheaper by the dozen 1&2 and the fog. That's it

Its not as easy to be typecast as people think, Chris Reeve was seen as Superman because he defined that role, every Superman since has been partly based on his performance, yes, each actor has added to that base but every starting point has always been based on Reeve. And nobody will be typecast with Superman until they do a better job than Reeve which the majority believe that neither Cain, Routh or Welling has done. Plus it proably helps both Welling and Routh that they are playing the character at the same time and this whole "one or the another" mentality set in with some people.

And if you are a great actor you should be able to rise above even the most iconic characters, i mean is Harrison Ford typecast as Han Solo, or Indiana Jones or Jack Ryan.

^Not true. You don't have to be the best to be typecast.

I say Adam West, the ENTIRE world responds Batman. He couldn't even get any other film roles because he said all the producers told him everyone would just think Batman. If it wasn't for that, he would have been Bond and not Connery.

Thank you Mr. Socko! I'm glad you feel me! And for anyone who thinks TM hasn't been typecast, he's goin to be known as Spiderman til he goes away. He may get a role every now and then away from Spidey but the title won't escape him, just like he it didn't escape Reeve. Despite Welling getting other movie offers, he's going to be known as Clark Kent. Routh even though he played Superman in a "successful" movie, its Welling who people recognize as Supes. I'm a nurse at a kids hospital and when Smallville comes on they recognize Welling as young Superman but when they watch SR, they don't even acknowledge Routh. Maybe they shouldve waited for Smallville to end to do SR cuase people see Welling as Supes and not Routh which might hurt Routh in the long run.

I disagree. I think Welling will be able to overcome it in the longrun if he gets better film offers than the ones hes chosen so far. Typecasting is generally easy to overcome in Hollywood nowadays.

Brandon Routh has a better chance of being typecast. Your patients may not be as familiar with him by name since he's the new guy with a few months of exposure and Wellings been around for years...but everywhere you go nowadays, you see Routh's face representing Superman, hes everywhere. People may not even know Brandon Routh by name as an actor but recognize him from all the Superman promotions.

I think he's kinda screwed if anything. I'd say Welling's safer but really it comes down to whether their agents are boneheads or not.

and he swung around pleasantville as well

being known for playing a role and being known as that role (which is what typecasting is) are 2 different animals. TM is known for having played Spider-man, Chris Reeve was known as Superman. Big difference.

its all about to bash brandon routh.
I disagree. I think the OP has a really valid question, and any Routh bashing from the way he posed his question is just incidental.

I don't think Tom is typecast.. yet. I think he will always have the tag as TV's Superman first and foremost in his resume' but fortunately, or unfortunately, Smallville isn't a household show for the majority of households.

Alan Alda wasn't typecast as Hawkeye Pierce, and George Clooney worked his way past Dr. Ross - and those WERE huge shows that created iconic TV characters.

I think there's a lot of *luck* involved in the entertainment business. I don't think you can predict who will or who won't "make it." Tom is talented and gorgeous and experienced in working hard. All we can do is hope he does well, whether it's with acting more in features, tv, or perhaps even doing the Directing thing.

lol

How can he 'fly out of the cape' when he never wore it and can't fly?

Exactly!

I look forward to seeing him in other roles. As much as I love the character of Clark Kent as portrayed by Tom, I love Tom, the actor, independently of the character he might play. I'll go to see everything he does during, or after, SV.

(That said, Tom's Clark Kent will always be MY Superman! :super: )

How's this bashing Routh? Its a question about Welling.
the question was if tom is typecasted.then i saw a post that tom will be remebered that he is superman and brandon played superman.
tom plays clark and brandon played both.

but lets bash brandon since this are the smallville forums.
