Since the discussion is limited to Welling being Superman on Smallville alone, I'll respect that and offer my opinion on the matter with out going any further in terms of Welling in a potential theatrical version of superman separate from Smallville, even though that's really what I've always hoped for. But Welling being superman on smallville is just as fun to discuss.
Smallville has just started it's ninth seasons and by the looks of it, they're still going strong, good for them and for those of us that enjoy the show.
Welling has been a favorite of mine in terms of superman ever since day one of Smallville. There was something about this fella that had me thinking ...Superman. Every fan has a picture of Superman in their head, a particular way they imagine the guy physically, vocally, his overall qualities as Clark Kent/Kal-El/ Superman. Over all, to me, Welling comes very close to these qualities I look for in an actor portraying superman, and I consider myself lucky to have a show where a fictional character that I'm a great fan of, is brought to life in a great way. Welling has a warm, gentle quality about him that allows the viewer to accept him as your regular everyday man and yet also being able to picture him as a man of great action. Very few people can do the boyscout thing and still be likable, Welling pulls this off without any effort, it's more a innate quality it would seem. He is without a doubt a fantastic choice for Clark Kent/Superman, and I truly hope that one day, we all get the reward of actually seeing a grown up version of this character in his Superman days. After nearly a decade of watching him growing up to becoming this great Iconic character, I don't think that a Metropolis movie is to much to expect at the end of Smallville. And it may just be my inner fan-boy getting the better part of me, but I really think that it is a genuine possibility that we might actually get that movie.

Nice to see the thread was brought back, hopefully things dont get out of hand. I do agree i hope we get to see tom as a full blown superman within the show at some point. As for that rumored metropolis tv movie thing, i dont see why the show couldnt have a dtv/aired on tv wrap up movie. Heck other shows simular to smallville lik battlestar, prison break, and the stargate series have done it why not. We know the show sells very well in the merch department.

said this before...
They should wrap up the whole Smallville saga with BIG(ger) budget 2 &half hour TV Movie.
With Lex finally returning..:word: Uncovering Doomsday & then going on an all out revenge story against Clark & Oliver, with Doomsday creating massive carnage & destruction as well as killing lana & chloe :wow:... ending in the battle we should've had.
It's what the fans Deserve !

"Hope is our greatest quality":supes:

What's with the Matrix costume?

its not matrix, geesh everyone thinks they are ripping that/punisher and are forgetting the reasons behind why he is wearing black. Plus this isnt going to be his final superman look, just a first step towards a full blown costume.

I AGREE WITH WEBS.
People seem to fixate on just one element they see in an episode & fly with it :whatever:.
They should try piece together what they see & place it into context with "everything" the seasons have shown before.
The whole "black suit" thing is a nod to his Kryptonian side/heritage (always has been in smallville) & also a modern move to "the outfit" .... the clues are in previous seasons you just need to pay attention.

I hope I'm remembering this right, but I'm glad that Clark's outfit (because that's what it really is) will be going through stages. So stage one aka this one (aka Matrix Superman, if you will) is a good way to start out with how Clark gets to the classic costume we all know and love (though the chances of it showing up on the show itself is slim, though that might've changed throughout the years from Season 1 to now). What I do like though is that you could take Clark in this outfit, or maybe a version with the Superman colors on it, place him in like the X-Men films, and it would fit. It would be cool.

Superman wearing black has happened before: black instead of yellow on the "S", to the black costume in The Death and Return of Superman and Superman Doomsday. And he does look badass, but for the majority, that still wouldn't be Superman. I'am up for any redesign, any reinvention, for anything to keep a character or franchise up to date. But there are time honor traditions that have to be respected, and as time has shown; Superman's classic costume is timeless. So there's no need to change it because noone cringes at it or hates the outfit the moment you see it.

And you're right: in the show, black represents Krypton in a sense. So it makes sense for him to wear this. It also represents Clark at this point in the show (or "Savior"), to which I liek because it showcases what the character has become in this stage in his life.

My only fear for this season is that when Clark gets out of this and "brings back" his human side, he'll abandon the "S" on his chest for a while, which would be bad. Like moving forward with one step, only to go backwards to that same step.

My only fear is the whole black suit section will turn out to be an "alternate timeline" affair & not actually our reality at all.
& yeah taking back the \S/ symbol is something the writers could/would easily do.

It still looks like its ripped off from Neo.
They should have just let him wear the t-shirt with the symbol without the trenchcoat.

the trenchcoat could be seen as the move towards Clark wearing a cape. remember alot of the quotes he made about the cape(the one I remember is that he will never wear a cape in this lifetime) so maybe he getting closer to accept wearing a cape

they called a hero jackets . here in the uk . any dr who fans would know that captain jack and david tennant aka drwho wear hero jackets

am new btw hi guys

Hi there, and welcome.

The black trench coat look could also be a little nod to the Luthors, or Lex's influence on Clark. Lex and Lionel were often in black trench coats, but I personally feel that its just a transition towards the cape. Look at the length of it.

I agree on those points, and I doubt they would abandon the S after getting welling to wear it now and will be tagging it in the streets and all that. Plus another we have to remember is tom in the past pre season 4/5 frame i believe stated he doesnt want to wear "Tights" so something like this for first go around works for the character, where he is in his life and his feelings, and with tom not liking "tights". But we dont really know if he is still anti "tights" these days going into 9th season, and now wearing the S on his chest. Now if we get a finale superman suit in the series i doubt it will be "Tights" persay but more of something inline to jlers suits but classic colors/patterns etc....

He agreed to go stark naked season 4 & also wore Olivers "ARROW" outfit so there's definately hope there ! :supes:

True the thing is with welling we just dont know what he likes, dislikes, etc.... about the show, his character, and the whole tights costume/an outfit like the jlers. Since we has became a much more private person over the years. Now if he did a few interviews per year and what not we might have known how he feels now about being superman, costumes, etc... compared to when the show first started out.

Perhaps after seeing all his fellow JLAers wearing their classic outfits he'll feel more inclined to do wear it

I don't think there's really a doubt that Tom wouldn't wear the suit at least for the FINAL ever shot.
I just don't think he'd let the fans down really ..

And he just needs a nudge this season

Well if this is true. Their should be no reason they can't give Smallville permission to use the suit and make it a Supes show. :)
No Plans for New Superman Movie Source:MTV September 15, 2009With the formation of DC Entertainment, many thought a new film in the "Superman" franchise would be one of the big things the company would concentrate on. Not so, DC Entertainment Diane Nelson told MTV:"We actually don't have any current plans for Superman," said Nelson when asked if the new environment (and the recent legal decision regarding the character) made a "Superman" movie more or less likely in the near future... We've obviously done a lot of great things behind the property in our history, and it's a key part of the family, but we don't have current plans behind Superman," she said.Of course this doesn't mean that there couldn't be plans tomorrow, but for now nothing is happening.

:(

I guess a possible positive of this is... maybe that will further lessen restrictions, or diminish the thought that there even need be restrictions, on Smallville for the benefit (or whatever you want to call it) of big-screen Superman. Maybe?

It is also possible that they will just give Superman up. They have to pay to much now to use him & specific known things

They should just let Smallville end it's course and transition it to the big screen. It's their best and only shot. Take Geoff Johns or Jeph Loeb and let them have a shot at the script and let Tom finally take the mantle that's already his.
