Watchmen HBO Eyeing ‘Watchmen’ TV Series from Damon Lindelof

That's quite soon. Means we should be getting some casting info/director confirmation in the near future.

I'm curious to see production art/ design. See how different it is from what Snyder recently gave us.

I just wanna know who's going to direct this thing. Prior Leftovers experience would suggest Mimi Leder is a possibility, but you never know.

I still think Snyder's version nailed quite a few of the designs (Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, Comedian) but there is a lot of room for improvement (Ozymandias, Silk Spectre II, some of the Minutemen).

I actually loved his Minutemen aesthetic.

HBO's Casey Bloys on 'Game of Thrones' Wait, 'Big Little Lies' and 'True Detective' Returns
"Everyone wrote last year about how we'd be in trouble without Game of Thrones [at the Emmys] and we did just fine," Bloys told The Hollywood Reporter during an interview Thursday. "This is an old story because every year, 'Oh my God! What is HBO going to do?!' Last year, that was it — we were going to die at the Emmys without Game of Thrones. And we had Westworld, which is coming back this spring. And Big Little Lies and True Detective and Alan Ball has a new show, and Succession and Sharp Objects, which is fantastic. And the Watchmen script is fantastic."

Nicole Kassell to Direct Pilot
The Leftovers showrunner Damon Lindelof has tapped one of the series’ episodic directors, Nicole Kassell, to helm the pilot for his high-profile followup drama project at HBO, Watchmen.

Lindelof and Kissell will executive produce the pilot. The project, from Lindelof’s White Rabbit in association with Warner Bros. Television, also has received an order for backup scripts.

Kassell’s two Leftovers episodes, the season 2 “No Room at the Inn” and season 3 “It’s A Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt World,” both have been lauded by critics.

This is Kissell’s second pilot directing job after TNT’s Claws — also from Warner Bros. — and one of the highest-profile premium pilot assignments for a female director.

At HBO, in addition to The Leftovers, Kissell has directed episodes of WBTV/Bad Robot’s Westworld as well as Vinyl. Elsewhere, she has helmed episodes of FX’s The Americans, AMC’s Better Call Sall and SundanceTV’s Rectify as well as finales for ABC’s American Crime and Hulu’s upcoming Castle Rock, from Bad Robot and WBTV.

Huh. Little surprised it's not Leder.

Heavy as the material was in The Leftovers, I welcome just about any and every director who helmed an episode on that show hopefully handling something on Watchmen as well.

Huh. Little surprised it's not Leder.
Leder's got a few feature projects lined up I believe, like her Ginsburg biopic. Probably prevents her from directing the pilot. Hopefully Leder gets the chance to direct a bunch of episodes for Lindelof however, the Leftovers turned it around once she came on board.

That being said, Kassell is still a great choice. Her Leftovers eps are fantastic as well.

If that's the case, they better cast quickly. Unless they've already done some and plan on dropping it on us all in one fell swoop...

I'm cautiously optimistic about this. Lindelof's definitely talented, but apart from Lost I haven't cared for anything he's done. He's worked on a lot of bad genre flicks (Star Trek, Cowboys & Aliens, Tomorrowland), and while I'm sure The Leftovers is well made it's overtly religious storyline doesn't interest me. I've been waiting for something he's worked on to grab me, and it looks like Watchmen may be it.

Hopefully this will turn out great. It all depends on the actors (who were well cast in the film apart from Akerman but squandered) and the execution. I'm not so concerned about faithfulness, I just want a good show. Have they released any story details at all? Will this still take place in the '80s, or will it be present day? I wonder if they'll still to the original series or perhaps adapt some of the Before Watchmen books (I particularly enjoyed Darwyn Cooke's issues).

You know, I've been so caught up in thinking of who Justin Theroux should play that I completely overlooked how perfect Carrie Coon is for Silk Spectre.

Oh, **** yes to that.

I still say Colin Farrell would make a great Comedian.

I like Justin for Comedian. :)

I'd prefer if they didn't hire bigger actors. Except Comedian who would fit. That was one of the things Snyder got right.

Yeah, it's too bad the Snyder cast was already used in that film, because the Comedian, Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, Nite Owl and Sally Jupiter were all perfect. Only Ozymandias & Silk Spectre were glaringly miscast.
