Yeah....the voice was dope...although at that particular time I was paying more attention to the date I was with (if you know what I mean).....my timing has always been off.

Um...From what I've read and heard about the movie through interviews the Angel of Death is a female. so can't be HB father.

The Angel of Death tells Liz that HB destiny is to bring about the end of the world and then asks Liz does she still want HB to live. Liz says yes and the Angel of Death saves HB, but tells Liz when the time comes she will suffer the most out of any one.

It was kinda hard to hear to me, as well. I think it was something about HB's prophecy of ending the world and how he will play a part of it eventually, and if Liz, knowing that, still wanted to bring him back to life, even though it may mean her doom later in life.

Ok...this may be a dumb question. Is the Angel of Death HB's father??
If not then who is? Satan? Because I know they said he is the son of the fallen one.

But isn't he a demon from another Dimension? Or is he a demon from Human-christian Hell and Rasputin just opened a dimensional portal to Hell (human-christian hell)?

Astaroth is Hellboy's dad.

In the Hellboy comics he is THE devil. The comics are pretty much a mix of every belief possible, no matter how ridiculous and insignificant.

Work of art, no doubt, but someone had told me about a John Landis homage in the picture somewhere which, apparently, I missed. ????

I thought in Hellboy comics he wasn't the devil?

Wasn't it just in the first issue of The Crooked Man that a character said something about seeing the devil and him looking nothing like Hellboy, to which Hellboy responds, "You know, I'm not the --"

Am I wrong here?

I was referring to Astaroth actually. He's the king. He is the devil and not lucifer or satan or who have you. In the comic book lore at least.

That's the impression I always got. I may be wrong, though, and Hellboy's dad may be someone else.

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I thought this was an atrocious movie. Beautiful visuals, sure--but they were completely wasted on an utterly nonsensical storyline. There's a difference between anti hero and *****e, and Hellboy falls on the latter side of the fence. The only character that was sympathetic was the villain... The villain actually cares when his friend dies. Hellboy and Liz? They don't bat an eyelash when agents bite it. You'd think there would be some TINY sense of camaraderie...

*sigh*

I wanted to like this movie. I really did. I came out more disappointed than I have in ages.

But, yeah...great visuals...good fight scenes...but they had one of Jackie Chan's wushu guys doing the choreography, so...of course.

The Angel of Death is Hellboy's dad? :wow:

I don't know if this is going to make sense or not, but #2 kind of felt as though it reset Hellboy back to a more immature mindset which I thought he had outgrown in the latter half of the first film

YESYESYESYESTHISEXACTLY.

Hellboy is SUCH a petulant moody kid in this--it totally ignores the progression from the first movie. Uggh.

One scene where he chooses to be good and thank Manning for giving him a hand and all of a sudden hes supposed to be pensive and mature and responsible? I thought it was a very natural progression. He went from sort of a jackass to a just a ball buster. Went from making fun of Manning to his face to going behind his back. Yes there was more focus on getting out of the BPRD but this aspect wasnt missing from the first one. He wasnt exactly sutble in the first one when you think about the scene where he saves the cats in the subway.

He seemed about the same to me. At the end of the day, Hellboy is just going to be....Hellboy.

Agreed....I think that yeah Hellboy has gained a little respect for Manning, but you have to consider how much time has passed between the first movie and the second and how many missions HB has been sent on and his growing need to be accepted by humans, but the only real roadblock to giving interviews has been Manning.

Yeah...he acted really childish at times, but heck he has probably always been that way. It was just that in the first movie they didn't want to show this too much as to be badly perceived by audiences as a red big dumb child.

But Part 2 allows us to explore his varied emotional states more, now that we know what he's about.

Ah. That makes more sense now. I always just took it Hellboy was from a hell-like dimension. Son of a powerful, purely evil force...born for destruction, hate, and, of course, evil...but doing the exact opposite of that. That's what's so compelling about the underlying story. Your origins don't have to make you the person you are. I find it very entertaining to wrap my brain around that concept: Hellboy's life is spent fighting against the purpose he was, essentially, conceived and born for.

It's ridiculous to compare it to religion or any other real-life element because it's such a mash of folklore and myth and legend and fantasy. I know many of the Christian faith who are still Hellboy fans...because, like myself, they consider it pure imagination. It's not undermining anything...it's just trying to tell an interesting story. Even so, some of the symbolisim is very powerful, which is part of what keeps the character vivid.

Agreed....I just didn't know if he was from Human-Hell or a dimensional Hell and whose son he is.

Thanks for answering guys!

p.s. It would've been nice that when he had the final battle with Nuada, his horns and crown would've appeared either during or after.

Why would they appear if he hadn't said his name backwards? He had no reason to say his name backwards, so his horns wouldn't grow.

lol No. The Angel of Death is female so that's not possible.

I forgot which book it was but Hellboy is the son of a human witch and a demon (implied to be Astaroth, the king of hell). Sometime in her youth when she was really into witchcraft she made a deal with the devil and agreed to have his kid. This kid would bring on the apocalypse. She did but later as she grew old she regretted her decision and became a nun hoping for some kind of forgiveness from god. Of course this didn't happen and the devil came back for her on her death bed and took her down with him (hanging on hooks no less).

Hellboy has a human brother and sister as well born from this woman and a human man, I believe. Forgot where I read that though. All my books are boxed up.

I agree with you.

i loved this movie... leaps and bounds above the first, and it's just so damn enjoyable and fun and oh-so luscious to look at.

i gave it a 9. one of my favorites of the summer, just behind wanted, wall-e, and iron man, and above the incredible hulk and the dark knight.

In this movie I am pretty sure they could've found a reason for them to appear with something going on. Heck, I have learned that with films of this caliber nothing is set in stone and things can happen just for the sheer entertainment and "just cause" of it.

Finally caught it a week late, but loved it, more character to it than the first time without stupid human characters butting in.

I liked it, but didn't love it. Saw this on Wednesday. After some thought, I'd say the main reason to see it is the visuals. As a storyteller, I think Guillermo del Toro can still learn so much more.

Primarily, my issue is that the story arcs never climax. You have Liz's pregnancy, then you have the Prince and the Golden Army, and then there's the comment about Hellboy still being a threat to humanity. But at the end, nothing is properly resolved. The most interesting of all three is the brief comment, and nothing's really made of it. "The stork's a'coming" parts could've been handled alot better, too. The dialogue gets very awkward during those shots.

Johann Krauss really stole the show and Seth McFarlane did a great job. Still, the movie tends to get so involved with itself that most everything else is either sorta average or only marginally good. I'll consider buying this on DVD, but this was not as good as critics have been saying. I still prefer the first.

I enjoyed the movie...I treat it as the middle of a coming climactic end to a trilogy. If a 3rd is made. the monsters were cool...that angel of death was weird...
Red was just fine to me. He's immature..he's what 20something? He's a kid still. He dont age like us...he's like 60 when he's mentally a 20 year old.wel in #1 it was said so.
I thought he was fun...the drunk scenes were funny too.
one of the things i like is that ya got a outcast hero type with laughs, action and monsters...i dont eeeven want to see batman...too dark for me. and i like dark.

If you miss out on the best cinema offers because it's bleak, then you're going to miss out on alot of great films.
