Henry Golding in Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

Henry Golding and Lewis Tan must be plotting Simu Liu's death now.

I cant believe this is only going to make 3M in its second weekend!
The first weekend was bad enough at 13M (compared to 40 - 50 M for the last 2 GIJOE flicks)
Embarrassing.

And they’ll blame it on Covid. I’m sure it impacted the BO as it did everyone else but considering how well other movies have opened, and this was always DOA

Snake Eyes won’t make in its entire run what Rise of Cobra and Retaliation made in their opening weekends.

Sigh.

I just saw Snake Eyes:

Pros:
The Actors chosen for Storm Shadow, Baroness, and Scarlett. IMO, all three were varying improvements compared to their previous live action actors.
Storm Shadow was my favorite character in the movie. (Blind Master was so much better than Rza's godawful performance from GIJOE Retaliation.)

The action choreography at times

Cons:
This is my first time seeing Henry Golding and I dont think he s a good action guy. I can accept him not being a scarred , soldier or wearing the costume since this is a prequel. I was hoping for SOME some level of badazzery or some presence, but imo he doesnt have it. Due to the plot, he also comes off unlikeable and his origin of his name is cliche. Storm Shadow and his head of security were more intriguing than SE.

Baroness and Scarlett are only in it for 5-10 minutes total.

While the choreography was decent, the stupid shaky cam ruined 75% percent of it.

For a lot of the first half, it seems like a generic Yakuza/Shenmue adaptation. The Cobra/Joe elements are minimal.

Overall: 5/10

IMO the "best" GIJOE live action film is GIJOE Retaliation (2013). That is a "grilled cheese" among the poop. Paramount should have done a sequel to that with Rock instead of rebooting again. That felt like a simple version of the Sunbow cartoon with some decent elements even if the characters were flat (Flint)

There was a local theater that I originally intended to go catch a matinee showing of it, for yesterday to only find out it got pulled one week after it's release. Looks the 4k steelbook blu-ray is about to be up for pre-order soon....

No offense to Henry Golding fans, but I don't get what everyone was raving about with him before. Handsome dude, I must admit. Sort of reminds me of Brandon Lee.

At the same time, he has none of Brandon Lee's charm, presence or charisma from what I could tell.

For the life of me, I want Lorenzo DiBonaventura fired from GI Joe permanently and to have it taken away from him.

I think Hollywood just likes to cast generic handsome guys hoping for the next huge breakout. It used to be just generic white guys. At least now they're branching to generic non-white guys (see also Regé-Jean Page).

The really interesting actors who breakout are never just thrust into the spotlight. They're usually unconventional in some way, or are thrust into the spotlight but then work with super interesting directors to break out of that "handsome guy" thing (see Leonardo DiCaprio or Johnny Depp).

Just announced that Paramount are rebooting TMNT after the last movie bombed because the studio is so desperate for franchises so there’s hope for GI Joe yet. They just need to get rid of a certain producer…

GI Joe would be great for a Paramount+ series tbh.

But I’d take a Snake Eyes / GI Joe sequel with a better story/script/director. That’d be fine by me.

The cast was all fine; lol the actress playing the Baroness was at an 11 the whole movie but that’s the bit of over-the-topness I like in GI Joe fare. I don’t think Hollywood’s done with Henry Golding, so there’s no point in throwing him away— Paramount will hopefully learn from their mistakes with Tatum & Retaliation and not underestimate their cast. It’d be a different Snake Eyes from the source material going forward, definitely, but I can stomach a talking Snake Eyes that takes his helmet off if I’m being honest. Idk, maybe have Storm Shadow slash his throat in the finale & set up a third film where Snake Eyes returns to the rebuilt Arashikage Clan to learn lessons from Blind Master & young ninja Jinx that help him defeat Storm Shadow & Cobra.

Snake Eyes would again be a POV character in this new GI Joe movie but instead of exploring the inner workings of a ninja clan, it’s a clandestine international military outfit. He develops a relationship with Scarlett (maybe reveals his real name!) & butts heads with Duke who he doesn’t want to take orders from or some such lol, with characters like Tunnel Rat, Heavy Duty, & Wild Bill rounding out the cast of Joes and serving as the film’s comedic relief (lol I’m specifically thinking of Ling, Chien-Po, and Yao—in that order—from the animated Mulan as the archetype for these characters).

Since the past team movies have already delved into nanotechnology and government infiltration, lean on the super-soldier trend & introduce Mindbender as Cobra’s lead scientist. Baroness tasks recent recruit Storm Shadow to train Cobra’s new army of Winter Soldier knock-offs who can topple entire regimes overnight. But it’s Cobra & GI Joe action hero schlock—and we’re selling toys— so the super soldiers are monstrous Bio Vipers.

And Cobra Commander would be the Evil Emperor character as in The Empire Strikes Back, an intimidating presence pulling the strings behind Baroness’s actions—seen via hologram or monitors. Amp up his menace to counterbalance the Baroness & Mindbender’s over-the-topness.

Man its just sad seeing how much Paramount has fumbled with this franchise and I don't have hope for that live action TMNT reboot either after how much a slap in the face those last two movies were.

They don't deserve to have the rights to either of those franchises along with Transformers, but at the end of the day I understand that its all about money not quality.

You would have thought they would have learned their lesson by now since the last two movies were BO and critical disappoints, but nope and I bet another 5 years from now they are going to try to reboot the franchise again unless someone actually steps in and show that they care or it gets taken over by someone else.

I do feel a bit bad for Golding for being the face of this misfire, but he will no doubt get more work in the future, but it sounds like action, lead roles just aren't for him.

I watched Crazy Rich Asians a few days ago and I was bored with the film that I couldn't finish it. The women in that movie carried the movie.

That's why I think Pattinson fits that sort of latter and he proved himself as a decent actor before signing on for Batman. And why I'm hoping he will work as Batman.

Yeah...

I guarantee you... Most "Romantic" movies focus on the female characters. Golding was a himbo for all intents and purposes. It was all ABOUT the female characters, especially the female lead, her friends and then her love interest's mother.

So saying the female performers in a Rom-Com carried the movie is not saying much anything.

I’m starting to doubt that about Shang Chi. They’ve shown very little fighting in the trailers and what they have shown is generic fighting with occasional slow motion.

Dont worry Shang Chi will definitely deliver

Maybe that’s because they’re trying to be judicious with the amount of hand-to-hand fight choreography they’re showing in trailers. Preferring instead for one to get a full taste of the action when you’re watching the movie rather than spoiling them in a minute in a half trailer. In my mind, what we’ve seen so far in the trailers is merely the tip of the iceberg in terms of the action. Which I think is a rather smart move. Trailers these days tend to show too much, so I think it’s been a nice sign that the trailers have been relatively scarce on what they‘ve shown aside from a few big giveaways; like Wong fighting Abomination.

I mostly have faith in that movie to deliver thanks to Dustin Daniel Cretton(the guy who did Short Term 12). He’s a filmmaker I admire and Marvel has a quality control only rivaled(and in some cases) surpassed by Pixar. Which, funny enough, Disney also owns. I really think Shang-Chi will surprise people in its quality. It’s going to be much better than what the trailers are letting you on to believe.

I couldn't have said it any better myself I 100% agree

I hope you’re right. I want some Crouching Tiger level footwork

"One key element of putting together a successful Marvel film is ensuring that the action is both unique and accelerating to audiences. While speaking with Empire Magazine, Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton mentioned in an interview with the British outlet that the action choreography for their martial arts superhero movie is inspired by the various films of iconic action star Jackie Chan and Ang Lee‘s Oscar-winning film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Also, mentioning the wuxia-style of fighting was added to the film by choreographers from mainland China."

The ingredients are all there for the action to be great, the only thing that could mess it is the editing.

Paramount Rolls the Dice, Releases 'Snake Eyes' Early on Digital and On-Demand
The Henry Golding-starring action film didn’t quite light the box office on fire (even by pandemic standards), which likely influenced the decision to forego the traditional 45-day wait that many of us expected the movie to abide by after its July 23 release date. That would have set its premium video on demand date for sometime in early September, but that’s no longer the case.

Instead, you can now watch Snake Eyes from the comfort of your own living room tomorrow, August 17, 2021. For those who still prioritize physical media collections, the movie will subsequently be made available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 19, 2021.

That’s okay Paramount. We don’t want it on digital either lol
