Fantasy Highlander Remake

Mad Max, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Fly and The Thing were GREAT movies that still hold up today.

Highlander? Not really. Like i said, looking back at it now, it really was a bad, yet fun, movie. Lambert's acting was just... laughably bad. But it kinda makes it endearing.

Mad Max? I gotta say, I wouldn't mind that getting remade, because that's not even that good of a movie. Mad Max 2 I would say holds up a lot better.

Ah man i love Mad Max. That film is just raw. It's a cheap B-movie, but Gibson's brutal performance elevates it.

Gibson is the best part of it, along with the plot and what happens to him that makes him go "mad." But the rest, the B move style just didn't gel with me. Mad Max 2 had a great scope to it.

I haven't seen mad max in a while but I remember it had an awful WTF ending where he didn't even finish the bad guys at the end. It was left hanging and part 2 didn't start were the first one finished. Road warrior is great though.

Ryan Reynolds has proved he come act serious in past work such as Amityville Horror, Buried, Smokin' Aces, etc. i'm sure he can pull off the role of Connor, but i honestly just can not see him as a 15th century Scottish. Reynolds just seems too youthful for the role. then again who knows? perhaps the guy directing this sees something in him that we don't. i still think someone like Fassbender, McGregor, or Gerard Butler would be ideal as Connor.

I still stand by my previous suggestion, even though I know it won't happen. And that's a shame because "he's not a box office draw." Big f***ing deal. Reynolds isn't either.

(Ironically, a long, LOOOOONG time ago, I petitioned for Purefoy to play Hal Jordan).

Huh? The ending was great. He left the guy to either saw his arm off, or blow up. He blew up. Perfectly showed how Max had completely snapped and become that "empty shell of a man" that we saw in Road Warrior.

Hey, what about Ryan Reynolds in a remake of Mad Max? I always thought that film needed some light comedy in it.

Mad Max a better film than Highlander? Semantics. Highlander to me was infinitely more enjoyable than the depressing dross that was the first Mad Max. Road Warrior was, however, an excellent entry into the series.

Love the poster who mentioned Purefoy... I hadn't even thought of him and he would be a fantastic lead for the film IMO.

They should cast the bloke who plays Robb Stark in Game Of Thrones, at least he's Scottish in real life.....

Count me in on the HL>MM team. Actually, the only MM I kinda enjoy is no2.

HL is pretty badly-made though, and it's more than dated now. However, the idea is so powerful and the performances are jsut cheesy enough that I can still watch it and thoroughly enjoy it.

And Reynolds is an actor. If the vision is right, he can transform as well as be transformed, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. Not that I think he's THAT good, but wasn't Ledger widely considered as a pretty boy (even with Brokeback Mountain under his belt)? I have faith. And, again, we need to see the characterization first. We may not even get Connor or even the Connor as written in the original.

It could be argued that Reynolds is B.O. poison.

I've always loved the original Highlander. It's a cult classic and despite Lambert not being the greatest actor he did fit the role.
I wouldn't mind seeing a remake because there's a lot they could do with it but Reynolds seems like the wrong choice. He's a good actor but doesn't seem wordly enough. I guess we'll have to see where this goes.

This is what I don't get with some people... the guy who directed it came from making music videos... it was never going to be Schlindler's List. I actually enjoyed a lot of the visuals and corniness of HL especially Clancy Brown as the Kurgan.

What don't you get? I never said i didn't enjoy it, Highlander is a lot of fun.

But for the concept of the story, I think it can be done much better, with better acting and a more epic scope.

Thanks, yeah I'm a big fan of Purefoy. That guy got totally screwed with Solomon Kane. It wasn't the best movie, but to not even be released in the U.S., even on DVD, is just an injustice. It wasn't the greatest movie, but it was much better than the other R.E. Howard adaptation (Conan) and Purefoy was epic in it.

I really hope his new TV series with Kevin Bacon is as good as it looks.

What if this doesn't go the same route and takes place in the future. So basically Reynolds is from modern times.

Weeeeell, Fincher has videoclip background, too, but look at where he is now.

I think Mulcahy was a very bold director. He was constantly looking for new angles, he experimented. He just wasn't very good at it (just like Schumacher). Then Highlander 2 happened and it was over for him. He should never have come back for that.

Or if Reynolds is the "apprentice" to an old Immortal, and the latter is the actual "Highlander"? The possibilities are endless.

I've been a fan of Purefoy ever since I saw him in Resident Evil (the only watchable part). He was phenomenal in Rome. Solomon Kane f**ked him up big time, what a terrible terrible cliche-ridden soulless movie.

That said, I was puzzled when he left V for Vendetta, supposedly because he couldn't meet the standards and demands of the "V" role.

The problem with the original Highlander was that they never really thought beyond the film when the wrote the story. I mean, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that the whole concept of that plot really does NOT lend itself to a sequel, particularly when it ends with Conor killing off his last opponent.

Thus the sequels were pieces of crap, with badly cobbled together plots simply ignoring parts of the first film. Continuity? Bah, who needs that .... :D

I just hope there's a bit more intelligent structuring this time round in terms of the story.

Gregory Widen didn't want it to be a franchise. He's pretty bent on ending his stories from the first movie (see: The Prophecy).

But the story is so rich that I can't agree with his decision. And then you had the 2 idiot producers, Panzer/Davis, who thought they were Aaron Sorkin or Jonah Nolan or something and drove the franchise to the ground, save for the TV series (which was mainly written by others, of course).

I really really hope this goes the Robocop route, which seems to be getting more and more respect due to its artistic choices.

In that case they need to decide from the outright if there's a possibility of this being a franchise. Otherwise, it needs to be filmed as a one-off, with the story tied up by the end of the film. Any indecision here could potentially ruin the sequel's plotline, if there is one.

If there is the possibility of sequels, I'd like to see more time spent in the first film on building up the character of the Highlander before he becomes immortal. Something like what they did with Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins - compared to the previous Batman films, we got to know him a whole lot better and significant time was spent on the character before we even saw Batman on screen. They have to make the Highlander a character we care about.

No, I was talking about the original and the producers of the previous franchise in general. I have no idea what they're going to do now.
