Fantasy Highlander Remake

I've been a fan of Purefoy ever since I saw him in Resident Evil (the only watchable part). He was phenomenal in Rome. Solomon Kane f**ked him up big time, what a terrible terrible cliche-ridden soulless movie.

That said, I was puzzled when he left V for Vendetta, supposedly because he couldn't meet the standards and demands of the "V" role.

Yeah, his exit from Vendetta always puzzled me. Not sure what happened there. Given that your would have never seen his face, I'm not sure that the role would have made him a star, but it's possible that leaving the film hurt his career.

Then again, the Wachowskis were involved, and those guys seem to have a few screws loose, so who knows.

No, I was talking about the original and the producers of the previous franchise in general. I have no idea what they're going to do now.

Dear god! having never seen the sequels I finally got my hands on a copy of the 2nd highlander and what a $&%ing mess that film was. What on earth were the producers thinking when making that film? Immortals? Bah let's make them aliens and have a blade runnery feel to it.

No wonder this the franchise went straight off a cliff after the first film.

personally i feel if the reynolds rumours are true, then its a horrible miscast. while i do enjoy aspects of his films he just doesn't seem right for highlander. while conner may have been able to be a smart ass with reynolds it will come across as forced

whats worrys me is if this si the style they are going for who the hell will be the Kurgan and Ramírez

I really hope that Reynolds isn't cast in this role. I'd much rather see someone like Gerard Butler cast.

I´d also go with a new villain rather than using Kurgan again.

I feel bad for Ryan because he is talented. But there's a sense of 'the ship has sailed' stigma that he carries now, after almost a decade of trying to be the leading man type.

I say wait and see. We don't know if it'll be an actual remake of the 1986 movie. I really think this will be based on the original idea of the Immortals and the Game and some characters, but it won't limit itself to just doing the same movie again. They seem to be wanting a new franchise with this. They may not even call it Highlander.

Ryan Reynolds could even be like Ritchie from the TV show, aka a new Immortal.

At least HLII was technically and visually interesting. You should watch the other 3 films. No, actually you shouldn't ever. Unless you want eye cancer. Then rent them and watch them back-to-back.

Seriously, you have no idea how idiots the producers are. I've seen interviews and I've heard their views on the franchise. They make Jon Peters look like Moses or Jesus or something.

I like Ryan Reynolds alot. BUT, I don't think he fits the character of Connor. I feel the makers would try and infuse some of the Reynolds humor, which wouldn't fit.

Someone like Christian Bale would fit wonderfully with the role IMO.

Also, they need to give the film proper structure. They need to even have an idea where the immortal originated from. SO they can create a coherent myth, especially if they do more than one film.

They also need to know what the prize is. Exactly what it is. Not the audience straight away. But the producers need to know this. They need to know everything from the off so they can create this world and make it feel real.

That was the problem with the previous franchise IMO. The first one covere these up wonderfully due to it just being pretty awesome and rather stylish (and a kick ass sound track). Today's audience needs more.

If the previous producers are involved, then I don't hold much hope. Yet, I still hope it will be good. Weird feelings :-p

I think the previous producers will have nothing to do with it. First off, one of them died right after HL5 was released. The other guy, Peter Davis, sold the right, I believe.

if they are skewing a bit younger, how about Ramírez as Ramírez.

That's Édgar Ramírez, who played Ares in Clash of the Titans, played Carlos the Jackal for the TV mini-series

Well, it would follow the tradition of not casting a Scottish guy.

Why would Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez be a Scottish guy?
If, anything casting a guy of Spanish descent would break tradition, not follow it. You have it backwards.

Oops, I thought you said MacLeod. Although to be fair, Sean Connery is Scottish.

Right, that's why I said - casting a guy of Spanish descent as Ramírez would break tradition, not follow it.

And before anyone says- but he's Egyptian, in the original script (if that is what they are going back to) he was Spanish, the 1986 directors wanted something more arbitrarily ancient sounding (and to muddle the inexplicable Scot accent on someone called Ramírez who was living as a Spaniard) they just threw in Egyptian, but he was living as a Spaniard, become one, maybe like the Moors and Berbers (ie Arabs of North Africa) who had conquered and settled many parts of Spain, they were now Spanish, El Cid Campeador Spain’s national hero for eg means "The lord-master in Arabic, and Campeador Champion of military arts" in Spanish (Juan Cid Ramírez was his name and title in the original script). He in effect was a Spaniard, living as one for centuries, Toledo Spain was at the heart of metallurgy and swordsmanship in Europe at the time, this is where they originally placed Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez, where his identity was forged , hence his name and look - Spaniard.

IF they were going a bit older I agree with others who suggested Antonio Banderas, that would be great!

If younger I think Édgar Ramírez would work.

As far as Ryan Reynolds as Connor Macleod, that would not have been my choice, although he may be a better actor and closer to Scottish than Lambert, I don't know if he has the presence or intensity for the world and time weary character, although who knows, it depends what he's given, maybe he can pull it off.
Or maybe he's being considered for another role, someone from the modern timeline a detective or something.
For Macleod I'd much prefer as suggested by others, someone like Gerard Butler or even James MacAvoy

Ryan was really good in Safe House (a very underrated action movie) but I still can't see him in this role unless they were changing the story to make him a regular guy in the present who finds out he is a Highlander. That might work I guess, but it would feel like about 200 other movies.

It could go many ways: He could fill the Ritchie role from the TV series and a Highlander would be his mentor, he could be a descendand of Scots, the movie could be named something other than Highlander. I really don't think Reynolds will play a Scot.

I guess we'll see, but if the rule of other Highlander movies applies, then he probably will: if he can't do a Scottish accent, he'll play a Scot.

If he can, then he'll play a Spanish Egyptian.

Anyone who has doubts about Ryan Reynolds acting ability, just needs to go and watch "Safe House"
He very much holds his own with Denzel Washington. Which is no mean feat.

I don't know what to say. Sometimes those people in Hollywood are so dumb, they totally deserve those flops :cmad:

was it really that hard to cast a Scottish actor?

hell gerard butler is Scottish and plays a bad ass with ease and a better actor
