Fantasy Highlander Remake

I really did like the first but I'm not worrying about it being remade. They wont be able to truly remake it anyway . I'll regard it as a different take on the characters.

Yep. It wouldn't be a "direct" remake. It'd be a "reimagining."

For all that the catch phrase of the original film was "There can be only one," that doesn't stop plans for Highlander from continuing, and the latest rumor has it that Kevin McKidd may be set to take over the role of Connor MacLeod. The folks at JoBlo revealed that the actor mentioned in a radio interview that he'd been approached about staring in the film.

McKidd, most recently seen in the short-lived NBC series Journeyman, is at least actually Scottish, unlike Christopher Lambert who originated the role. Not much else is known about the plans for this reinvention of the Highlander franchise, other than that there will be scenes which take place in medieval Scottland.

The Highlander series has spawned four sequels and two television series, all revolving around the mysterious race of immortals who can only be killed by having their heads cut off. Whenever one immortal kills another, they absorb some of that other immortal's power - a process they call the Quickening. In theory, when there is only one immortal left, that immortal will gain 'the Prize'.

That is actually a decent choice. I must say I enjoyed the show more than the movies (especially the sequels) but I could get behind McKidd as Connor.

It does sound like they are taking this serious & trying to improve on it.

Like many others have stated, I wouldn't mind seeing a remake of the original Highlander, so long as they do a few key things...

1) Keep the blasted mythology consistent. Do it as either a one-off reboot, or a trilogy story, but make sure everything is completed by the end. No leaving crappy "loopholes" for further stories, and absolutely no "bumbling cops on a murder case" plot device. Either make the peacekeepers smart, or leave them out entirely.

2) Make the story serious, with a "camp factor" of zero. Humor is okay, but don't overdo it. The original entry struck a fair balance between the two, so taking the same approach in that respect would be a benefit to the picture.

3) Treat the special effects as assets to the story, not the other way around. At its core, the Highlander mythology should be a story about people, not comic-book styled explosions or tales of superpowered aliens. This is a tale of life and death, honor and integrity, vengeance and justice...treat it with the proper regard.

4) Leave the origin of the Immortals unknown, and clearly define exactly what The Prize is. Failure to do either was a huge aspect in the eventual failure of the original franchise. The reboot needs to prove that the filmmakers have learned the errors of their ways, and are determined to create a story with depth and heart, not camp and stupidity.

5) Use great actors for each character, no matter their overal importance in the story. Fans these days can spot terrible actors with incredible accuracy, and the film will suffer a lot less in total if dedicated, skilled actors are chosen. Christopher Lambert was Connor in the first film; his portrayal hit the nail right on the head. Clancy Brown tried real hard, but the Kurgan always came off as more of a parody to me, especially in the present-day scenes. The only moment where I really took him seriously was in the fight with Ramirez, and even then barely so.

Highlander Remake?

It's a bad joke.

The first Highlander is so brilliant.

And how are they going to top QUEEN music?

"Here we are, born to be kings..."!

I posted this in another thread...

First off, I'm a huge Highlander fan. Got the Clan McLeod sword on my wall at home. There is no Highlander but the first film.

That said, as with most films from the 80's it is getting dated in appearance. I wouldn't mind seeing a remake. And Gerard Butler and Tom Jane are great casting ideas. But unfortunately, if Hollywood did this they'd probably screw it up more than they already have.

Duncan McLeod couldn't carry Connor McLeod's jock.

Gerald Butler is not a bad choice.........not sure how he would come off on screen as Highlander.

Tom Jane even looks like Lambert! :hehe:

I could see T. Jane playing Connor with long hair, he does resemble him a bit. And could he pull off a Scottish accent & make it believable? lol

Haven't heard anything at all on this recently.........is it still a go?

Did you guy hear that Christian Bale is set to play in Highlander?

^ You just want Christian Bale in everything. If this was a remake of Wizard of Oz and they needed someone to play the cowardly lion there'd be a legion of people suggesting Bale.

i had a idea about this how about EWAN McGREGOR he already can do the sword fighting from star wars training and hes a good actor!

there's too many remakes now: highlander, red dawn, and Robocop? what? I don't mind a Flash Gordon remake (it's based on an old pulp source anyway) but why remake 80s stuff? why why why?

because this is the new 80s, thats why. thats my theory anyway. cause everything big from the 80s are coming back.

yeah, im interested to see how it goes. I agree with the fact that they should have the original Queen songs in it. even if it is as a nice lil nod to the previous film series. but there should be no other bands covering the songs. they tried that with the Highlander: The Source and they massacred those songs.

Ewan might be good also. Not sure if he'd want to get into another franchise though.

I love Highlander, I even have a Highlander based Tatto.

Highlander to me is something very specail because it was something me and my Dad enjoyed together. We watched the movies and show on TV all the time.

I am skeptical of a new one. I mean Lambert was Conner. He made the character what he was. I just don't see someone else bringing the same depth to the character. If they feel like they need to make a new Highlander that is a restart I think they should rename the character.

I think it would be cool though if they bring Watchers into the movie though. Joe Dawson deserves to shine on the big screen and that didn't happen in the last couple movies.
