Fantasy Highlander Remake

In that case then, if an immortal lived a normal life and never got hunted down, could they die of old age? Or would that trigger a rebirth of some sort?
Mind you, my memory of the tv series is very spotty at this point, and maybe they covered this, but as far as I know dying a natural death wouldn’t trigger Immortality.

Though I guess that would be rare, because the Immortals tend to seek each other out as part of the Game.

Always felt any Highlander reboot would be better served as a modern TV series with a great budget and effects. You could have a dwindling number of immortals and numerous locations, and build to a finale between the last two. It's difficult to have a finite ending in one movie; if successful, they will want a sequel and as we saw before, the premise of Highlander doesn't really lend itself to that.

No he was legitimately born in Egypt. Ramirez is not his birth name.

He's not senile. He remembers his last wife from like a 1000 years earlier, Shakiko. Her father gave him that unique sword made by a method that was like way ahead of its time.

I never said senile. The guy is ancient. He has told a lot of stories over centuries. It is entirely possible he has conflated his true history with his fabricated one like ArmsHeldOut said.

Well, as we're never actually shown flashbacks to Ramirez's supposed early days in Egypt, all we really have to go on is his word. And that's called into question when he initially describes himself as a Spaniard, then later reinvents himself as an Egyptian. Connor himself draws attention to the inconsistency, which gives Ramirez an opportunity to explain himself. But does he take it? Nope. I mean, how easy would it have been to say you were first discovered in Egypt (since immortals are foundlings and know very little of their birth), then opted to assume a Spanish identity for whatever reason? Not terribly difficult. Instead, he pretty much gaslights Connor, making it seem like he's dense for missing details that were never shared. lol

Now, just to be clear, I'm not ruling out the possibility that he is what he says he is, but there's definitely sufficient reason to suspect him of being dubious here. And again, that he chooses to address Connor's concerns in a rather flippant manner is pretty damn telling to me.

I know there are comics and other literary works that have since attempted to clarify and flesh out his origins, but that stuff, along with the movie sequels which go off in an entirely different direction, is pretty extraneous to me.

Like that. Whether he intentionally is lying, forgetting his actual origins or he just sees himself as a man of the world, we do not know his actual, legitimate origins, and he may remember not either.

He has lived so long that he probably lied about his origins to gain favor or avoid complications with where ever he was.

Yeah, I don't know how they can match Clancy... I can't think of any current actors with the same combo of acting ability and physical menace, especially someone suitably large enough to dwarf Cavill, which is another reason why he is a poor fit for this role. Connor needs to be able to blend into the crowd in the flashback scenes. Cavill is just too big and bulky. He looked laughably out of place in Enola Holmes.

My suggested solution? Don't try to do a direct remake, and especially don't try to just directly remake the Kurgan. You aren't going to find an actor with the right combo of towering physique and menace, so find a new angle for your main villain.

Pretty sure even the first movie implies immortals are sterile. Her immortality was always going to doom her to the same fate as every other immortal. She was never destined to have children or grow old. She was angry with Duncan for killing her but whether he did it or someone else did, she was never going to have children and probably not grow much older than she was.

We have never seen an immortal who was over 60 (Connery was 56 when he played Ramirez) and we have only seen one child that I can remember, from the television series. Every other immortal was somewhere between early 20's and their mid 50's and never one who mentioned having had children before or after their immortality.

If the reboot isn't beholden to following prior lore exactly, you could always say that "adjusting ones age" is one of the tricks an immortal can eventually learn. If you don't want it to be a quick and easy disguise superpower, have it be something like "an immortal can turn on their aging, either in forward or reverse, but they still age at normal speed". So, an immortal whose physical age is 25 could decide they want to look 50. . . but it would take 25 years to reach that point. And if they wanted to go back to looking young? It would take another 25 years to age in reverse.

Ramirez was an honorable man. He took Connor under his wing and attempted to protect Connor's wife. Ramirez never gave us any reason to doubt his word. So why are we doubting his word?

Ramirez could've easily killed Connor and taken his Quickening lifeforce. Instead he formed a bond with Connor and taught him how to survive for centuries because he didn't want Kurgan to be the final immortal believing it would be the end of mankind.

This is a bit of strawman, as I'm merely suggesting that Ramirez is of a somewhat frivolous/playful nature. Having a little harmless fun at Connor's expense (who is clearly frustrated by the discrepancy) doesn't make him a dishonorable man—at least not in my eyes. That's just how I see it.

Any of you remember Jet Li’s movie The One? In that, an evil version of him from a parallel universe was killing off all versions of himself from every universe - and every time he removed one, the lifeforce of that version was disseminated amongst the remaining ones making them more powerful - stronger, faster, more durable, becoming superhuman.

I always thought a similar approach would work well in a Highlander reboot, and lead to an even more spectacular face off against the final two. As far as I recall, asides from immortality the Highlander and others like him weren’t any different to a normal human in terms of strength and speed and so on.

The ultimate ‘prize’ would be to gain all those powers and become the most powerful being in existence - with the power to change the world. For the better if Highlander wins, or for the worse if someone like Kurgen wins.

Stahelski actually said as much (to Collider) a couple years back. So, you're definitely onto something here.

"Still fighting the good fight. Highlander is an interesting property. It’s through Lionsgate as well and Neal Moritz. We’re trying to get it done. Anyone who knows anything about the property knows it has a lot of meat to it. It’s a good property. It’s got a lot of potential. We’re just trying to figure out the best way not to $#%@ it up. Not to try and fit it into a 1 hour, 45 minute movie, which, when your pitch is, ‘There can be only one,’ and in your first movie you kill everybody but the one, sequels have a problem of happening. So we’re trying to design in a way that gives us a little more lead in, a little more time with the mythology and see some of the best characters. They did seven seasons of TV, and even though the TV show may not hold up today, the idea of it and the characters they brought in were super cool. So we’re trying to devise a methodology that leads up to The Quickening. You just don’t end with a one-on-one battle in New York, cut off a guy’s head, and that’s it. We want to do this in such a way that it becomes more of a series whether it’s short form or long form that would let us explore that in the best way. I have a huge, heartfelt love and respect for the project, so we’re trying to find the best way to do it to give fans what they want.”

“We’re well past the script phase in terms of what we want to accomplish with a feature-length version of what we want and based on there being more after that. We want to tell the complete story of The Quickening, the Immortals, and all that. But the overall environment is changing so much. Look what Netflix is doing with TV now. As an action designer myself, there are two or three episodes of Game of Thrones that blow away 90% of features. Netflix has a whole new delivery system with features on that coming off differently and letting filmmakers and directors expand out without being crushed by opening weekend box office. So there’s a couple different mediums we want to explore and what is the best way to bring this out in.”

You could get away with things like that in the 1980s. Not in 2021. You couldn't cast a caucasian actor as Ramirez in 2021 .
So Ramirez will likley now be either black, female, lgb, or all three?
Get ready for it (and for better or worse whatever schism it creates) They might likley completley reinvent him/her.
Predictably becomes pretty standard cut and paste... Ramirez is the most likely lead (second) character they can check the diversity box with.

The original script (if that is what they are going back to) he was Spanish, living in Toledo Spain the heart of metallurgy and swordsmanship in Europe at the time, at least that's what the creators wanted to emphasis, hence his name and look.
The directors wanted something more arbitrarily ancient sounding(read as easy to convey), so they just threw in -and he's Egyptian too! If it felt tacked on, it's cause it was.
Nuance likely lost on most, and new directors will likely take plenty of leeway to justify their own reinvention.

I just hope Cavill dirties himself up. In the present day scenes he should look like he’s been sleeping under a bridge for a couple of months. Come on Cavill, go as ugly as you can - which is still above average - but do it!

Y,,,,someone suitably large enough to dwarf Cavill, which is another reason why he is a poor fit for this role. Connor needs to be able to blend into the crowd in the flashback scenes. Cavill is just too big and bulky.
Reboot with Cavill seems they are more trying to channel the look and feel of TV Duncan
They'll just call him Connor.

I mean Ramirez is genuinely an Egyptian born man in the original...so...that was my point.

Maybe it's just me, but this remake screams for pedro pascal to have a role.

Im pretty sure there was an immortal in the show who died when they were 12-13 and were basically stuck in pre-puberty for 500 years.

But im pretty sure your right, you have to die an unnatural death for the immortality to kick in

Also you gotta make sure you die between 25-32 cuz if you gunna be immortal you gotta be at your peak

They'll just call him Connor.

This makes the most sense to me. I mean, he clearly describes himself as Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, a metallurgist from the royal court of Spain upon meeting Connor for the first time. But when Connor refers to him as such, how does he respond? "I'm not Spanish! I am Egyptian!" Connor in turn calls him a liar. Now, if he was to say something like, "Oh, I lived in Spain for a time, but I'm originally from Egypt, it'd be a non-issue; but he flat out denies being Spanish even though he'd clearly just introduced himself that way. Point being, he's likely messing around with Connor. At any rate, based on his name (which is backed up by the Kurgan) and European appearance, I think we can safely infer that he was being truthful about his Spanish origins the first time around.

That said, for the upcoming movie or web series, I frankly don't care how they reimagine him, assuming they use the character at all. If they intend on doing so, and are just as confused as we are on the Spaniard-Egyptian thing, I suggest making him one or the other—not both. Also, if he's going to be Egyptian, give him an Egyptian name and all the trappings that come with it.

Is Cavill a lock for the role? Not sure how I feel about him as Connor (or Duncan for that matter), but we'll see.

He wasn't messing around with Connor because he had that Japanese katana that was made with an advanced technique that was like 1000 years ahead of its time, and that's why Brenda Wyatt wanted to know more about the provenance of the sword. He had the sword years before he joined the Spanish court.

He was messing around with him or conflating certain details, but his name, physical appearance, and the manner in which he first described himself all point to European Spanish origin. Normally, I'd take the Scottish accent into account, but as Connery never altered his way of speaking for roles, this part is inconsequential.

Personally, I hope that this entire movie takes place in the past...and serves as an origin story and he has to kill one particular immortal due to some grudge issue. That way you can move the story forward through time with sequels, with the understanding that The Kurgan is out there somewhere, but we wont get to him for many films.

I mean the first Highlander movie is great but it killed future endeavors because Conner was the last one at the end of the film. The second movie even really struggles with that, and the whole planet Zeist thing, which I hope they stay away from and stick with ancient tech. Even the 3rd had to come up with a ridiculous reason for there to be more immortals.

When they re-tooled and brought Duncan in for a show the universe started hitting it paces, later seasons made it better with Ancient Immortals, the Watchers, etc. End Game tried to bridge them but ultimately couldn't.

Honestly though I hope they stick closer to Duncan's mythology even if the remake stars Conner. Keep the Watchers, and Ancients as in universe cannon. The Kurgan could be an Ancient that's hunting MacCleod based on prophecy, and who has done so for centuries, but shouldn't be the last one. Though I do hope more for a mini-series for this than a film.

"Henry Cavill ... cast in the lead role"\
‘John Wick’ Director on How His Henry Cavill ‘Highlander’ Reboot Will Feel Like a Prequel
Looks like it's going ahead? Or is this development limbo?

-How ‘John Wick’ Director’s ‘Highlander’ Remake Differs From Original – The Hollywood Reporter

Our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that [from the franchise’s history], but we’ve also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we’re trying to do a bit of a prequel – a setup to The Gathering – so we have room to grow the property.

I forgot this was happening. Cavill always seems to have a lot of projects in development that take a looooonnnnggggg time to get to the finish line. I’m still waiting for a trailer or anything from that Argylle movie that supposedly releases on Apple this year.

Anyway, when this was first announced I wasn’t sure about it since Cavill was also playing Geralt and that’s a similar character in terms of attitude and skill set. But now that he’s done with that, I suppose I can’t complain about another project where he gets to swing a sword around.

SO who's gunna give us our new covers of "Princes of the Universe" & "Who wants to live forever"???

I don’t know about covers, but Muse have some very Queen-esque songs but brought right into the modern age, would love to see them handed soundtrack duties
