Hip White People Using The N-Word: Right Or Wrong?

It's not a drastically different debate though. Think about it. Words like n**ga, "******ed" and "gay" are all used by the hip, young generation today in a context 180 degrees different from the original meanings.

I call s*** "gay" all the time, and I definitely use "******ed." Most people in my life are utterly ******ed. And you can catch me on any given Sunday driving in New York flipping off someone else and mouthing "gaaaaaaayyy!!!" at them through my ride's glass window.

So...

I just do not see it as appropriate. Just because the younger generation is trying to change the meaning of the word (n-word or gay) doesn't make it right.

The n-word is a derogatory word referring to a black person, and used to imply someone as being inferior, incompetent, or ignorant. It does not mean 'friend'.

Gay is a sexual orientation. It is not a word that should be substituted for stupidity, incompetence, or ignorance.

Question: At the rate things are going currently, what place do you all think the term "ni**a" will hold in human vocabulary, 50 years from now? Will it become more mainstream and accepted by society after our older generations have died off?

Sadly, I expect the word to become even more mainstream, and people will up and ignore its origins.

I guess its good, in a way, to take the impact from something that's innately bad, but as long as I live, I am no ones N***a, n***er, and I will take these words in the worst possible way.

First of all, as someone who has seen BEP live twice (Once they were opening for a band was seeing, the second time was Zootopia, and they were one of the acts) I have to say that they are GOD AWFUL LIVE. Heck, just watch their live performances on tv. They're dreadful live.

Second, NO ONE should say that word. The fact that black people think they can say it and no one else can is stupid. If you have an offensive word that you don't want people to call you, DON'T USE IT YOURSELF. It's like we're asking for it.

Mentally disabled people are offended by the word ******. Gays don't like the word f*ggot. Yet, you don't see them saying "Yo, what up ******" or "What's good, f*ggot". They are offended by those words and have removed them from their vocabulary. The fact that black people continue to use that word like it's a term of endearment, but when someone who isn't black use it it's suddenly a racial slur it ridiculous and makes me sick to my stomache.
I've heard some of my gay friends call eachother ****** before. So I think what you said is untrue.

Eh, I gave up on being offended by small stuff like white people saying the N-word when they're singing along to songs that use the word. I don't care when the word comes up in songs, movies, or anything like that-- feel free to quote the movie Blazing Saddles around me.

That said, I don't even use the word. It's an ugly word with an ugly history. I'd prefer not to use it, and I sure as hell don't want to be called it. I don't care what context you're using it in, or if you're ending the word with "a" instead of "er," you do not call me that word. Not even in a friendly manner. I don't care if you're black too. Don't.

But I won't exactly lose any sleep if I catch a white person singing along to Jay-Z's "Jigga My N****." It's just not worth the energy to get offended by that stuff.

I've heard some of my gay friends call eachother ****** before. So I think what you said is untrue.

And I've seen a gay person go off on a person for using that word, and the person using the word wasn't even directing it at him. So I think there is truth in that.

You're friends are truly special case. As a gay man, I know that many many of our people do NOT call one another f*gs or even like people using the word in general, one of us or not.

Not sure that's entirely true, JP. I mean, I call some of my gay buddies F*ggot and it's totally in jest. We'll meet up somewhere, and they'll be like, "Whaddup Silly F*ggot" and I'll reply "Sup beeyotch?" And it's all love. Nothing malicious about it at all.

In fact, one of the guys that hangs in our circle can get a touch emotional in his actions--esp. when he gets mad, like when we're playing ball on the court, he always calls foul. Like...non-stop.

And we call him Queen. :oldrazz:

I think the gay guy you saw had bad experiences with straight people in the past and that's why he went off on that person.

I don't get upset over particular consonant and vowel combinations.

Queens different though. F*ggot, N*GGA are just words I think should be banned from being said by anyone.

Oh, I also agree with JP, BEP sucks live.

It's the same way in my circle of friends. We all talk smack about each other.

Really? To me Queen is synonomous with F*ggot.

It's like po-tay-to, po-tah-to as far as I'm concerned.

I think it's hypocrisy at its zenith when Blacks get mad about other white people using the ni**a word in a non-racist context. It's like...you put it out there in the mainstream.

For Blacks to whine about it is so...I dunno...gay to me. LOL

:funny:

I am very confused now... what's a boot again?

A shoe?
Trunk of a car?
German for boat?

The n-word is a derogatory word referring to a black person, and used to imply someone as being inferior, incompetent, or ignorant. It does not mean 'friend'.

Gay is a sexual orientation. It is not a word that should be substituted for stupidity, incompetence, or ignorance.

But the fact that words like "n----", "gay", and "******" are considered derogatory terms completely proves my point about language being evolutionary, and the fact that the word "n-----" can evolve to be something non-offensive.

****** originally meant "ignorant", and had no connections at all to race. But through common usage, it became associated as a derogatory term against a particular race, just as it can evolve into a non derogatory term.

Gay originally meant "happy" and had nothing to do with sexual orientation, and "******", as someone earlier stated, was a term for a bundle of sticks, and later, cigarettes.

These were words that were originally non-derogatory that have evolved into derogatory terms, and can just as well once again evolve into non-derogatory terms, because the evolution of the usage of words is the natural course of language. I'm taking a Spanish class right now in college, and even my professor just got done with a section explaining to us how particular things in the Spanish language have changed due to a change in the culture, usage, and the Spanish language's interaction with other languages.

It's just the natural course of things. Words nowadays don't mean what they used to, and words in the future won't mean what they mean today. It's the reason why we don't say "thou" or "thee" anymore.

I know right. Could you believe if you actually meant that? Hah. It would make you look crazy and silly to think that.

Silly to think what? That white supremacy never happened? The joke part was the matrix, but the supremacy part has happened. What would make you think otherwise?

Oh, I also agree with JP, BEP sucks live.

No words, ever, should be banned.

Freedom of speech, and all that.

Banning words is a slippery slope that I don't not want our society to go down.

I still feel like beating a dead horse by again pushing my view that words are nothing...

So is coke, a soft drink or a street drug? Does bad mean good or just bad? Is a crack something in the ground, a joke, another type of drug, a sign that something is off lesser value, or the top of a person's ass that hangs out of their pants? Does s--- mean awesomest thing ever or is it just a pile of excrement? Is moron a term to be thrown around whenever dealing with people that annoy you, or is it a term that describes people that have low IQs?

Silly to think what? That white supremacy never happened? The joke part was the matrix, but the supremacy part has happened. What would make you think otherwise?
Whoa. Back up there Malcolm X.

This is what you said:
Black people are mental slaves here in America due to centuries of subliminal white supremacy.
It's silly to think that. Hell, it's downright "cover your walls in newspaper clippings with yarn attached to them for 'connections' and circle letters at random intervals to spell out a secret message" crazy.

How is it silly to think that there hasn't been centuries of white supremacy? White supremacy even still exists to this day. It may not be apparent like it once was during the Jim Crow days, but the fact that millions of people in America worship an Israeli god as a white man shows that it is still present. I've seen countless people bow their heads to a white man as their savior without even questioning how the hell Jesus could be a white man.

Once again, how is it such a silly thing to suggest that there hasn't been an idea of white people being a superior race in this country? It's not like I said the government did it, and even if I did it's not like the United States government has been clean of racism in it's 200+ year history.

I don't think E-Man is silly. Remember, slavery was not only legal once, but there were once laws and propaganda in place used to keep black people from achieving equality. Those laws are gone, but centuries of programming don't disappear overnight. They don't even disappear in a couple of generations. Deep down, there's something in the black community that makes some of us unconsciously hold ourselves back. It's the reason why my older brother gives me s*** for speaking proper English, and why he went to prison for armed robbery despite being a spoiled brat whose parents and grandparents supported him-- he felt like he had to live up to a negative image that's glamorized for black people. It's a subconscious effort to hold himself back. He's a slave an old way of thinking. White supremacists don't even have to try anymore; it's a self-perpetuating machine.

Clearly you have had your racism rant rehearsed and I'm glad you got through it without slipping up or any misspellings. But why the hell do you keep thinking that I'm saying white supremacy never happened? Or does your rehearsed rant not work unless it assumes that?

I don't ****ing care. I just wish people would stop whining about not being able to say this or that. Just because you see someone else using offensive language amongst their peers doesn't instantly mean anybody can. I call my older brother a dumbass on a pretty regular basis and he typically just laughs, that doesn't instantly mean anybody else can do that and not get cussed out or smacked upside the head.
