Radio host uses the N-word repeatedly

Have you guys actually heard talk radio before??

I keep hearing "she cut her off before she was done explaining, and just went on about something else"

That is almost every call by almost every radio talk show host I've ever heard.

So? Should every comedy be like Vampires Suck? Just because every other talk show sucks doesn't excuse her not doing what her job supposedly is. The woman wanted advice, she went off on a stupid rant for shock value. She took the call so she could do that. Hell, for all we know the call could have been fake. I don't trust anyone personally and I think a lot of this crap is a work.

Kinda late on this thread, but anyways. I find it funny and sad that this topic always find its to this site and spark off heated debates. I agree with Heretic that the sooner that people stop being so sensitive to the N-word or any other slur, the better off we'll all be.
I live in the south, born and raised in Mississipi. Yet, I am around people of different races whose skin are thick enough to just brush off racial slurs. I've called jews ****s, and asians chinks but they always have some hilarious retort waiting. I guess I'm lucky to be able to have conversations like Clint Eastwood did in Gran Torino without any hatred coming out of it. But without getting too far off topic, words only have as much power as we give to them. As cliche as it sounds, it is true.

In my experiences, the people offended by the N word are not always the same people using it themselves.

Are people just saying the N-word now to stir up sh**? I mean people can't be this stupid. They know that it is a word that will get them in trouble. She probably just wanted to get some publicity.

That's how it's been for the last decade or so. They know they will catch hell for it, then wait while their supporters jump in to denounce people being so "politically correct" then they go at each other's throats. It's like they're playing a real to life RTS.

It just seems to be happening more frequently lately. The funny thing is. I don't know about anyone else. But it is actually starting to take the power out of the word. People don't seem to be as surprised or shocked as they once were.

Taking the power out of the word is the best thing to do.

The same goes for me, I'm from Texas and my circle of friends is pretty diverse, so if that word is being tossed around or any slurs for that matter, no one gets offended. The N-word alone is just a small thing that people seem to blow out of proportion.

People aren't doing it for shock value (though I cant, and wouldnt want, to speak for Dr Laura). What people are doing is saying "IT IS JUST A WORD" and using it to put it back in it's place...as just another word.

Again...any word can be used in a derogatory manner. Any word can hurt someone. We shouldnt just ban the english language because any word can be used to hurt someone.

That's very true. It's one of those words that can never be erased from people's minds. It had it's place in history and remained until present day

You'd have to erase 400 years of history to do that.

It is exactly this way of thinking why it is, I daresay, impossible for us to rise above racism. No one should forget their history, but no one should not allow themselves to be dictated by it. Now, I am not making demands of individuals who had suffered the time where they were persecuted. But for the younger generation, I feel that there is absolutely no reason at all why there should be such an emotional attachment to such trivial things as the N-word. Our elders fought for us live and thrive in society without compromise of our rights as citizens and more importantly, humans. You honor them by being a respectful and successful black individual, not beat down a person who said a word you didn't like.

As my momma always taught me, you just can't stop a person from talking about you. Words can be as sharp and painful as a blade or as harmless as a feather. If someone call you a ******, then you can actually be one and sacrifice your dignity to angrily engage in what would ultimately be a moment of ignorance.

I don't think that sort of willful ignorance of racism's legacy does blacks any good.

It would be better to be aware and mindful of the N-word's place in history and to always detest and disapprove the persecutive nature of the word.

It would be like having apathy when white person tell a black person to "pick their cotton". You can't have apathy and be mindful of the the historical implications at the same time.

This is just going to be one of those things were people are gonna have to agree to disagree. Both sides can give valid argument after argument but it's never gonna hold water due to personal opinion. The other guy can be dead on with his points, but if I FEEL a certain way about the issue, it doesn't mean dick.

I am a free, sovereign human being...and if whatever I am saying happens to have the N-word in it, then that is my business. I never say it in a derogatory way or as an insult to anyone or any group, so deal with it.

As I stumbled onto before, the Hype has blocked the word *****rdly even though it has ZERO connection to black people or racism. The word means reluctant to give or spend; stingy; miserly and dates back to the 1520's, before slavery existed in America...and before America even existed as it's own country. So, why does this word get blocked? Why did a professor who used it end up in a national scandal? Because the word kinda sorta looks like a word used to degrade black people? That is stupid.

It's blocked because you know some racist jack ass would use it just to irk black hypsters.

Because you may be one of the few people out there that knows the full history behind the word and understand that this is a different period in time. When the word is said whether it's deragatory or not, the media, and people for the most part always think of slavery and what not. I've heard it plenty of times and each time I did, I never wanted to fight anyone over it due to me being the race that they associate the word with.

Someone who is racist and wants to offend can use any word they want to irk people.

Look over a list of bigoted slurs...how many of them make sense? Most of them are just silly words people decided would be funny and caught on. Does that mean that Spic-N-Span should be forced to change their name?

Fact of the matter is, the word is gonna always be around, not everyone uses it in a deragatory manner. Some people were just brought up in enviroments where the word itself is commonly used, not just black people. I have often seen caucasian people use the word in the same manner, so who would I be to get mad at them. The word is all over the place, film, games, music, etc.

I pretty much agree with this. I Just don't care for people being willfully ignorant in regards to the word.

There is nothing remotely ignorant about moving on from the past. What is ignorant is using the past to perpetuate the very thing that you abhor about it. The history of minorities in this country should never be forgotten, but there is no point in clinging to an era in history that has been occuring since the dawn of man and will continue to occur.

There is an open-mindedness about this sort of thing that is just lost on a lot of people. Again, I fault no one who was there in the thick of it all back before and during the Civil Rights movement. These people's mentality were shaped by the lynches, and separation. Most young generations only have the history books to shape their view on that time. Unfortunately, we are taught not to look at history objectively which in turn makes the entire point of learning of the minorities' struggle pointless. Sure, there will always be incidences where someone ignorant is going to hang dummies from trees or wear Nazi costumes for laughs. But, we are at a point where we are recognized as citizens with equal rights. Therefore, when this sort of thing happens we can just sue and take their money. That would be far more satisfying than bloodying my hands for a fight that is, for the most part now, avoidable.

Like Terry said, this is a debate that is destined to go on in circles. Living in the South, I have learned that people will just be blinded by their hatred or sensibilities towards the subject to move on. Oh well.

Bingo!!!! That's exactly what I mean, I know with my parents they would here me amongst my friends conversating, and they would here the word get tossed around alot, but never to degrade anyone, she would go on this rant talking about "we didn't do all that fighting for you to be saying that word." OK did you personally fight? No, exactly. I can't stand when someone tries to take credit for something that happened in a period of time that they had no hand in. Just because it happened to my race doesn't mean that me myself or any other person of color should keep playing the role of the victim everytime it's said by someone of a different race. What happened in the past should stay in the past, simple as that. We as a people will never be able to move towards the future if we keep our minds stuck on things of the past.

This whole word needs to go away. NO ONE should say it. Whites, Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, WHATEVER!

It's a stupid word made up by a bunch of rednecks, probably because they couldn't say Nero (Spanish for black btw).
