We’re pretty sure some type of “clarification” will be sent out shortly regarding the following statement from Michael Caine, but for now, it’s the first confirmation from someone involved in the Batman franchise about new villains and casting choices. And it’s HUGE. The ubiquitous rumors about Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin will undoubtedly escalate after this. Here’s what Caine told MTV’s Splash Page…

“I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, ‘Are we going to make [a sequel to The Dark Knight]?’ They said yeah. I said, ‘How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, ‘****, they’ve done it again!’” [Laughs]

Caine seemed to reiterate his certainty, confirming that he’s also read the rumors in the British tabloids and that “[Warner Bros.] already got [Depp and Hoffman] in mind.” Make of this what you will. Christopher Nolan is on vacation and hasn’t publicly stated any storylines for a sequel, and Caine confirms he hasn’t spoken with him about it. More on this as it develops…

Thats alot of big screen personality in Depp and Hoffman. Not sure Nolan wants that much baggage in his filming process. I thought he likes to get lesser known actors who are known for indulging themselves in their characters.

True. but i think the main goal here is to basically have a villian equal to Heath's Joker. So im betting now its time to call in the big guns.

That definitely makes sense that a WB exec would say that. Depp in this movie means butts in seats. Whether or not one agrees with the casting is a different story but one cannot deny the BO revenue that would pour in if he was actually cast in the movie. I'm all for it.

Hmmmm......I like Michael Caine, and if he says something, I tend to think it's somewhat reliable. However, just because a WB executive he talked to would like to see Philip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin and Johnny Depp as the Riddler, doesn't mean it will actually happen.

Not that I'd object to this actually being how the sequel pans out. I like both The Riddler and The Penguin, and think both in their current comic incarnations could fit into a third film nicely - Penguin as the shady owner of the Iceberg Lounge, Riddler as the sleazy private eye hunting down Batman.

As far as casting, I'm a big fan of both Depp and Hoffman - I ranked them #2 and #3 respectively in my "Top 10 Greatest Actors Working Today" list a while back - but don't know about their casting in this franchise. Depp I think is too big a name, reminiscent of the casting of Jim Carrey in the same role back in 1995. I'd love to see Hoffman in the next Batfilm, but I've actually been championing him for the role of the Riddler. But if they were both cast in the roles this report says they could be, I have no doubt they both have the talent to pull it off.

With the third film featuring Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman all returning, as well as bringing in Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Riddler and The Penguin, not to mention casting a new leading actress as Catwoman, you could be looking at an ensemble that, on paper at least, tops even "The Dark Knight". But until Nolan says something...hell, until Nolan even confirms he'll be back for a third film....this is little more than wishful thinking.
