Michael Caine Insists ‘Batman 3’ Will Feature The Riddler, Considers Retirement?

Published by Josh Wigler on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 10:42 am.

A while ago, Michael Caine told MTV News that Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman would play The Riddler and The Penguin in a sequel to “The Dark Knight.” While Hoffman has since denied the rumor, as has “The Dark Knight” screenwriter David Goyer, Caine continues to insist that at least one of those characters will be haunting Gotham City.

In an interview with Collider, Caine was asked if Christopher Nolan would return for a third “Batman” film. “I would imagine so,” he said, adding, “That would be probably The Riddler [as the villain].”

Whoever ends up wearing The Riddler’s jumpsuit — or even if it’s another to-be-determined Batman villain — Caine doesn’t think the actor will have too tough a time living up to the high standards left by Heath Ledger’s Academy Award winning performance as Joker.

“I thought it would be a tough act to follow for anybody who played against The Joker after Jack Nicholson,” Caine remarked. “You know what I’m saying? Heath is The Joker. We’ll see.”

For now, Caine can at least confirm his own involvement in “Batman 3” — should he survive long enough to film it.

“Yes, if they do another one, I’ll probably be the butler,” he said. “I hope I’m still alive. Michael Goth, who played [Alfred in] Batman before me, the last time he played in Batman he was 84.”

At 76 years old, Caine has had quite the illustrious career, and he’s wondering when that road will end. “You don’t know when your time [as an actor] is up so to speak,” he said. “There just goes a period of time when the right scripts don’t arrive. And it hasn’t happened to me yet. It might have happened now. I finished this last picture ["Is Anybody There"], as I said. I don’t have another picture to do. If a script doesn’t come, then I won’t do anything and I’ll be retired.”

Retirement? Say it ain’t so, Michael! Luckily, the actor has no official plans to retire from the business. “There won’t be any announcement or anything,” Caine promised. “I remember [Douglas] MacArthur saying ‘Old soldiers don’t die. They fade away.’ Well, old actors don’t die. They fade away.”

He doesn't insist anything. He's speculating who the villain will be. You guys can stop e-mailing us about this, as it's not news.

Michael Gough 's name isn't Goth....

Just for the record, I haven't emailed anyone regarding this and claiming it's news(not claiming that you necessarily meant me). Just saw the article and thought I would post it here. As for the title of this thread and his "insisting", I just took the subject of the article and used that.

He does not insist anything!

He is merely contemplating on who the next villain might possibly be.

Michael Goth the butler of Gotham!

interesting read, always enjoy Michael Caine talking about Bat-news or rumors thanks for posting mate

Who cares if it's not news? There won't be news for months if not a year. Might as well speculate in a thread about speculation.... Peter O' Toole if Caine is a no go.

Time goes by quick... only a matter of time before the prostate starts swelling.

May Nolan hear you Mr. Caine. I really hope The Riddler will be on Batman 3.

Wow. So Caine could theoretically be 78 when he's filming the third installment. The guy looks very good for his age.

Max von Sydow would make a good Alfred Pennyworth. And uh yeah, he can act.

Its not really that we need a good actor for Alfred, we need someone whos funny and just being himself aka Michael Caine.

Its the same with Jack Nicholson, he stopped acting long ago and has been just himself in every movie basicly. =p

EXCLUSIVE: Michael Caine Explains Last Year’s ‘Batman 3’ Depp/Hoffman Casting Rumor

Published by Rick Marshall on Thursday, April 9, 2009 at 12:17 pm.

Remember when “The Dark Knight” actor Michael Caine told MTV News back in September that he believed Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman would be playing The Riddler and the Penguin, respectively, in Christopher Nolan’s next Batman movie? It was the scoop heard ’round the InterWebs — but unfortunately, it turned out to be one big misunderstanding.

While we were quick to follow-up with Hoffman himself, who denied the casting, MTV News finally had a chance to catch up with the veteran actor who first informed us of the villainous Batman casting rumor this week. In town to promote his new film “Is Anybody There?” Caine sat down for a frank chat with MTV Movies Editor Joshua Horowitz about the Depp/Hoffman hub-bub and how all of the casting rumor chaos began.

“I read it in the newspaper and then I got told off,” Caine told MTV News. “It was in the newspaper in Toronto about The Riddler and all that, and I thought, ‘Well, they announced it.’ And then I met this reporter who asked me about it, and the sh– hit the fan.”

While a recent interview with Caine elsewhere seemed to reiterate his prediction that Riddler would appear in the next Batman film, the veteran actor told MTV News that he actually knows very little about Nolan’s plans for the much-anticipated sequel to “The Dark Knight” — and anything reported otherwise has been misinterpreted.

“I don’t have anything,” said Caine. “I still don’t have anything. The only thing I know is [Christopher Nolan] is doing another movie anyway, so it’s not going to be soon.”
