Scientology is just one big distraction for Cruise. He's using it as a diversion while he continues to bounce from one Hollywood starlet to another.

One minute, he's selling a dream to some insecure actress about how Scientology can give them a purpose, a reason to live, and also let them become another in a long line of his many co-stars to receive Oscar Nods. Then, once they're buying into his concept, he's telling them that the purpose is in his pants, and it's named Lord Xenu.

You get the general idea from there and so on and so forth.

I don't think Holmes realizes how fortunate she is. W/out Suri, 6 months from now, she wouldn't even have a place to stay when Xenu commanded Tom to find someone else.
