Homophobia in criticism of BF and B&R

It's the cheesey lines that does it for me. 'The ice man cometh' and what-not.

*Sigh* Oh well, if it asn't for B+R we wouldn't have got BB or TDK...

you do know they only added nipples and ass/boob shots to batgirl because people did complain it was to ''gay'' right? I hve no prob. with homosexuals or homosequalism, but it isnt for batman

Where did you hear that? Evidence please. And again Ill repeat: what's gay about butt-shots and nipples? Because it makes you as a straight man uncomfortable? So it's one rule for girls and another for guys because heterosexuals are that prissy when it comes to the male body? And batman is for homosexuals, there are homosexuals in his world, and homosexuals are for batman :cwink:

It's not so much homophobia as uneccessary tougne n cheek campness that people hate.

I mean I know a gay person at my workplace and he says the one thing he finds annoying is other gay people being overtly camp just for the sake of doing like its some corny trend. Even gay people find camp annoying...

When somebody hates a camp or effeminate person then yes that is homophobia. And if a gay person hates an effeminate person then that too is homophobia, an internalised homophobia. If someone says "I dont mind straight acting, normal gays who dont rub it in your face. but i hate camp flaming gays" then that is bigotry, end of. Camp people don't have to apologise for being who they are. I find that mentality pretty sickening actually. They're hated for being who they are.

And tongue in cheek camp humour has been a staple of comedy for many many many years, and many of our greatest comedies/musicals are camp. And what's more these films have crossed over to the heterosexual mainstream and are beloved by straight audiences.

Now you can argue that camp and Batman do not mix, and no incarnation of Batman should be camp, but the fact is the 60s show was camp as hell and loved by audiences. Batman HAS been camp before, and may one day be camp again.

And it's one thing calling out Batman and Robin for being camp, and hating it, but it's another thing to use homophobic terms to criticise it, which people still do.

That's the heart of the issue here, I think some people get confused by what this topic is about. It was never made to continue the argument about hether the film was 'gay' or not, but simply to point out that when referring to the film, homophobic language, and insults should not be used.

Thank you good sir, that's exactly what I intended with this thread. To call people out on their reliance on homophobic insults in referring to the film.

Exactly, I personally dislike film as an adult. However, when I showed it to two boys I was babysitting who were 10 and 8, it was perfect, it was bright and colourful and cheesy and just what they wanted.

But when I talk about my dislike for the film, I try and keep my problems with the sexual tone out of it. B+R failed for many reasons, but not because Joel Schumacher is gay.

Yeah...I still feel the movie has some entertainment value. It makes you laugh a lot.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing lol...

I say as a serious Batman film, well, it isn't. As popcorn cinema, as an introduction for kids, as a light-hearted take, it works.

Those two kids are big Batman fans now, they started with B+R and loved it, now they have the comics and have seen the bigger Bat-World.

It is pretty gay that their costumes have "easy access" zippers right over their butt cracks. Last I checked, that's not a door that women walk through.

That's not gay at all. I have a zipper over my crotch, does that make Mr. Levi gay?

No, because your business end is something that men access on a regular basis. If Batman or Robin needs to take a dump, they should do it before they put on the 90 pound rubber costume. If going to the bathroom was such a concern for Batman or Robin, they'd almost certainly have had flies on the fronts of their suits. I do not think that the intention behind the butt zipper on the costumes was for poop to travel through it. :o

I say, what an incredibly well written, well thought out witty little come back.

Talking of homophobia...

Notice, I said your business end. :D

I'll admit that that could have been phrased a lot better than it was.

Yeah that still doesn't make sense, what you said about the zippers on the suits is a prime example of the stupidity and homophobia that not only clots this forum, but also the world.

Well it's not really a good thing. Batman isn't supposed to be a comedy. You're right though. It works as a kids movie.

Batman isn't supposed to be a comedy in the modern age, but think back to the 60's and the Bat-Mite era, it was a lighter, happier, more comedic Batman...

Back then people were even more homophobic though, so I doubt you'd have ever seen Adam West with a big zipper over his ass.

yet the incredible bulge revealing costume of robin's was completely ok

Okay, that is pretty gay. But not as obvious as a quick-access zipper on the butt crack.

i disagree i see a zipper in the back and its just how the pants come off....however small pants that automatically flash huge penis bulge kind screams hey look at this

See now you're taking a style of functionality and changing it to fit your own agenda. I saw the zip on the suit, and though oh, that helps them take it off, much like the zip in a pair of jeans.

Face it, your logic is flawed, and your argument is incorrect.

How does a zipper on the butt crack help him get into the costume? Does he slip the butt cheeks over his head and shoulders like a shirt? That's a very silly mental image.
