Big letters, see kids that's why you should proof read, and cutting and pasting is bad.

I just assumed the revolution that was going on in France and elsewhere would have carried on into Britain if it had been joined onto the rest of Europe, regardless of whether they were in governing power or not. I have heard that kind of comment being made before, and it made sense to me.

edit: i don't know too anything about it really though, what the revolutionaries were about, and whether they would have just smashed their windows too. I only studied twentieth century history in school.

I don't know a great deal about 16th-18th century history, but I don't believe what occurred in France had a possibility of spreading to Britain, since it didn't to other neighboring countries. I would also assume that Great Britain was much better off economically than France at the time. However, you are right in that the English Channel has been one of the most significant reasons why Britain has been one of the most powerful and stable European powers.

There were fears of political uprising towards the end of World War I, which is why the Russian royal family was denied asylum. Karl Marx also believed it would be Great Britain, not Russia, that would undergo a communist revolution because they had become an industrialized nation.

I could care less. Its not like many of them have done anything great to be proud of, most are just born into privilege. I remember when Diana died, while sad as it was, the amount of people who were genuinely shaken up by it kind of disturbed me. But thats just me.

I swear to you that im not trying to be a jerk but its "i couldn't care less", not "could care less". Sorry, it's just something I hear incorrectly so many times. Just trying to spread the good word haha :oldrazz:

It is a mass mind entertainment. in the days before television and mass media, the Royals were the living soap operas of the day that people followed. They were the only ones whose lives were deemed important enough to be documented.
and that continues to this day. A lot of people go along with it because they just blindly accept the status quo of things. It's just a lot of bs.

I thought it was only me seeing that 'could care less' makes no sense in the context. I thought all you Americans were a bit backwards. In a nice way though.

I don't like "Constitutional Monarchies". Why should some Woman be paid to sit on her bee-hind and look pretty, just because her ancestors ruled?
If you want a monarchy, have one. If you want a democracy, have one. It's ridiculous to have both, unless both the Monarch and the Democratic Government share equal powers.

I like to think of it like I could care less about them, but theyre just not important to me, so why go to the extreme. I couldn't care less however, about someone like Oprah. :o

The way I understand It, their were factions in the French Revolution that would have been Perfectly happy to adopt a British-Style Constitutional Monarchy. However, the French Royals weren't really co-operating so it failed. This allowed some Radicals to step in and take power, thus declaring the King a "Criminal" and executing him and his Queen. The Radicals only did this because he was the same King who oppressed them.
By the point of the French Revolution, Britain alraedy had a Constitutional Monarchy. The King hadn't had real power in over 100 years. There was no way too try too lessen his powers, and the British felt no reason too remove him from his throne.

ah, they don't decide anything officially on paper, but they all meet up at the bohemian grove every year, shapeshift back into lizard form and decide what to do with the rest of us.

rotfl

I think of the Royal family as celebrities and nothing more.

A lot of the people I know are really into British people and what's going on over there, but as you already know I haven't really taken a liking to them. In the poll I voted for "Everyone in the world has a little Batman mask like Harls except Kane"
because it had my name in it :awesome: but in all reality I view them just as normal people getting married, you know, good for them and I wish them well & all that jazz.

Damn you for quoting me before I edited that out! :argh:

One things for sure. If you admire royal families, which is nothing more than an over-glorified bloodline that has been romanticized to make citicizens feel like they live in a fairytale, you've been indoctrinated beyond all hope.

So did my sarcastic encouragement of your blind anti-establishmentism. :yay:

Is there some legitimate purpose to the royal family I missed?

There isn't. They're the remnants of an ages old ruling class that currently only have celebrity/figurehead status. Admiring them is no different than pledging your allegiance to a three colored piece of cloth. It's a way to recognize national pride and acknowledge history.

But you come in all "Boo! They used to have power but not anymore!"

Knee-jerk nationalism? Yes.

Historical acknowlegement? No. It's nothing more than desperate need for a historical connection and purpose.

I think you misinterpreted my post.

I did not. I over-simplified it. What's wrong with wanting a historical connection? Hell, what's wrong with "knee-jerk" nationalism, if that's what you feel and if that's what makes you feel better? Taking small comforts do not mean that someone's been "drinking the kool-aid" as it were.
