Superman Returns How do you compare the hype to other summer blockbusters?

Possibly but airing some spots during the matches (Especially the England games) would have seemed smart, also i'm surprised the cinema isn;t carrying a poster yet

have you tried asking them why?

Definitely low buzz. Nobody at my workplace even knew about it until I asked them about it. One guy mentioned he saw something about Supes in the stores but didn't realize it was for a new movie...just thought it was comic related.

Which begs the question, are we finally reaching the saturation point for comic movies? I actually heard someone comment "yet another comic book movie" when I showed them the trailer.

I've seen the promo machine in full swing. Wal-Mart, Toys 'r' Us, and my local grocery store all have been swarmed with SR material. The film itself will be a pretty tough sell for some people, as they are probably more into a Pirates sequel. However, with the consistency of the reviews, Jerry Bruckheimer had better hope people like his movie, or it won't be able to heartily plug the gap SR is going to make in it's opening week, I think. As for the overall hype level, everyone I talk to about it at work thinks the preview is tight. Keep in mind I work at a gym, so finding another fellow comic geek is like searching for a needle in a stack of needles. These people are average joes like none other you'll find.

I used to work in a gym as well, and all I have to say about your comment it, No Doubt lol.

A lot of non-comic book fans will be non-commital at this stage. What will really bring in the crowds after opening week is good word-of-mouth and positive reviews.

Trailers and TV spots get the word out there just fine but they alone are not enough to secure huge box office returns.

I don't know how big SR will be but I seriously don't see it flopping!

In my location theatre they have just put new poster with Supes and Lois on the wall

When people figure out that this isnt just another "typical" comic book movie, they'll see it for what it truly is... a compelling and entertaining movie. Not just some comic book adaptation filled with mindless action. Once people figure this out, they will no longer refer to SR as a comic-book movie, but a great movie.

I think that the preview screenings were a great marketing move. IMO the positive word of mouth will rise the hype

Provided that's what it will be. Not everyone's opinion may be as glowing as you'd hope.

But his opinion is similar to reviews of critics, so I see some progress :)

We have to thank Avi Arad for that...

nah... thank Hollywood

Think about it they are devoid of Origional ideas at the present time, Comics and Video games have now become script back bones

If the Studios didn't like it they could have said no.

You know what, if you start asking around, you´ll find plenty of people who don´t know that POTC2 will be out soon. Casual moviegoers aren´t as much into following these things as we are.

I heard the same "not another superhero movie" before Batman Begins, and it did just fine.

Nothing compares to Batman 89. That thing was the king of hype. It was everywhere. I mean everywhere. It was so big that a big thing was to shave the bat symbol into your hair. There were billboads all over the place. I mean litterally, people were being hyped months in advance. For a month you couldnt go anywhere without seeing at least one person on the street wearing something with the Bat logo. Not even Phantom Menace compares to the hype for that movie. And Warners didn't have to do much. I mean, it was everywhere. The week before the movie that was all even non fan boys were talking about.

On a side note, I think it's fair to mention that movie PR has to be really careful these days to not oversaturate the market. Anyone remember all the crap and hype around TPM. It was ridiculous. Though I was looking forward to the movie. I was a bit tired of seeing it friggin everywhere. Carefully placed product advertisement is better than a full on bombardment IMO. Especially since people are weary of being blitzed when it comes to movies because all that extra blitz usually hits you in the pocket book.

Personally, I think SR is going about it in the right way. The PR machine has picked up these last week and TV spots are everywhere. The SR logo is everywhere, but it's not overwhelming. SR featurettes are on the news, and it's getting the right type of press...all good reviews...all glowing reports for the cast and crew.

WB didn't stake 200 million into this project to screw it up with bad advertising. Believe me that got a bunch people in a room thinking **** up and a bunch of other people in another room thinking on the **** those other people thought up.

They got the ball covered.

That's exactly what's been worrying me.

There's only one other summer movie that has more hype than SR!

SNAKES ON A PLANE dammit! :p

Yes...in the long run. WOM saved that movie because the first opening days fans on the Batman forum seemed REALLY shocked the numbers were that low. And Superman really doesn't have time to pick up like Batman Begins did. I really hope Supes capitializes quick and fast at the box office. WB has done alot to market this film so if there are alot of people out there still in the dark about Superman Returns that doesn't sound too good.

The fans - myself included - overestimated the potential opening, some people were expecting Spidey-like numbers, and that just wasn´t going to happen. Batman had other problems to overcome, B&R was still relatively fresh in people´s memories - nobody else but Supes geeks remember Quest For Peace, it was almost twenty years ago. BB was dark and adult, while SR appeals more to families and kids, and it seems bigger in "money shot" spectacle as well. And I´m saying that as a big time Batmaniac.

Hype is pretty big where I am. Superman on Magazine covers, on posters on every corner and in advertising during every commercial break all day long.

Its much bigger than Batman Begins was.

Superman Returns still has factors against. Routh has been a mixed bag with the general public, box office predictions for the past year have been off a good deal, POTC2, and it has a huge running time. I am not saying Superman Returns is certain to disappoint I hope it makes Spidey numbers because it looks to be a terrific film. But we all know nowadays that doesn't exactly equal money. From my experience personally when talking to people who I consider the general public most of them didn't know what the hell was going on with the film or that it was even coming for that matter. But I am sure it will do just fine at least make its money back and then some but it does indeed seem to have some things against it that could POSSIBLY hurt it.
