How do you speak IRL?

Like a gangster from the 1920's who has had it with those damn dumb debbies hanging around tin pin alley, talking up all those drugstore cowboys.

I would speak Italian of course, just not a broken down ignorant version of it...

If you are born and raised in the ghetto, how can you help but not to speak the way others around you speak? If you choose to train yourself to speak differently later in life, then I'm sure that's possible...but notso initially.

Product of their environment and whatnot.

Look I'm quite sure I'm going against the PC statement on such a matter but... There is a small percentage of those who go to school in the ghetto and accept what they are being taught and by matter of CHOICE decide to speak correctly. Unfortunately the larger percentage in that kind of environment choose to ignore what they know is correct english, to fit in with their peers. It's a matter of being weak minded and afraid to be called acting "too white" or not street enough. Everyone seeing this discussion is seeing black and white already, so I hope there is no attempt from someone trying to corner me into being racist because I believe it's choice and not environment. I don't apologize for this view, it's my observation and I'll reserve the PC rhetoric for the politicians.

How about it's a matter of speaking naturally. People who are raised to speak one way, then are taught a different way to speak later on in life (through school) may not feel natural speaking that way unless they are in an environment where proper speech is used predominately. If they are still living in a ghetto environment, then its only natural to speak the way others around you speak...even if you know it is not the proper way to speak. Its not conforming...its doing what feels natural.

Actually, it's science. Why do you think people from small country towns generally sound like they do? 'Product of their environment' isn't just some blanket PC statement; when referring to things like dialect, and stuff like that, it's science.

You sound like the thousands of other guys who thinks that talking like this in some way makes you 'unintelligent,' and I'm betting you cringe every time you meet a black guy who doesn't sound like this guy:

No one was going to call you racist; you brought that on yourself. You sound like the thousands of other guys who thinks that talking like this in some way makes you 'unintelligent,' and I'm betting you cringe every time you meet a black guy who doesn't sound like Gregory Hines.

I speak pretty much the exact way I type, cause you know...I'm not a giant *****er that tries to act smarter than he really is because he's behind a moniter.

This is just how I type, dude.

:whatever:

It's science to be taught in school the word "ASK" yet say "AXE"

Ok thanks for the explanation...

Oh and yes, let's go ahead and use those words in another example as it relates to matter of intelligence.

If you were conducting an interview and an applicant said "Lemme axe you summn bouts dis job" (or however you ghetto type it) vs an applicant saying "May I ask you a question concerning...etc" isn't it understandable that the first guy is going to seem less intelligent?

Also since the lack of language skills continue it's pretty likely to conclude his educational background will get further behind from this choice to talk like his "homies"

So that puts us on a lower level of communication skills, and a lower level education. I think it is quite fair to say speaking that way is going to make you seem less intelligent.

PC or not, that is how my logic interprets things.

So what happens to K-12 education????????

They have to be taught "later in life" because due to their social environment they can't listen to what their teacher explains is the correct way? You do remember that we start school as children right? Seems to me a teacher has to get a degree before having their own class, and I doubt they are telling their students to "AXE questions" ...

I'm not changing my mind, I have a logic that works for me and apparently your logic works for you. ;)

Your "logic" equates to lack of understanding. There plenty of people who come from poor environments who are more than able to speak proper enough to survive in corporate America. But that doesn't mean that that's how they were raised. And if those people still live in impoverished neighborhoods, then they are still surrounded by the local language/slang...so they are going to hear it everyday.

Superhobo compared it to a dialect...and that's not too far of a stretch. Just as people who are raised in another country will often revert back to their foreign language when they are speaking to relatives, even though they speak primarily English when at the workplace or in public.

This is, of course, presupposing that anyone who speaks with this dialect doesn't have any other knowledge of how to speak.

Also since the lack of language skills continue it's pretty likely to conclude his educational background will get further behind from this choice to talk like his "homies"

Do I seem unintelligent to you?

Also, this is again presupposition on your part than anyone who speaks this way is automatically unintelligent.

So, by that logic, any immigrant who comes to this country with a very blocky knowledge of the English language is less intelligent than yourself?

Amazing.

PC or not, that is how my logic interprets things.

You have an amazingly skewed version of logic. It's not about being 'PC.' I'm one of the most un-PC people you're likely to meet. But, here I am.

You almost seem to have a holier than thou attitude in your "logic". You're telling me that throughout your entire K-12 education, you never once used a single slang word? You've NEVER done that?

Just because you KNOW how to speak properly, doesn't mean you do so 24/7. And if you do, then consider yourself very much so in the minority and very much too anally retentive IMO.

He's the guy at parties that people just walk away from mid-sentence.

Monitor* Jeebus that's a load-off. :O

depends on where I am, who I'm speaking to, and what I'm speaking about.

No, I've just adjusted to speaking in different ways, though they aren't really too different.

This whole debate about ebonics/ghetto-talk and such isn't ANY different than someone who lives in the bayous of Louisiana or the woods of northern Maine speaking "professionally" while at work but reverting back to slang and thick accents while they're home. I think it's a comfort thing. I just think it's important that EVERYONE (from any race and and socio-economic backgroud) at least be educated in the "language of American business". If they choose to use it or not, that's up to them :)

I think there was confusion in what we are talking about here. Occasional slang? Sure everyone does it from time to time. I am speaking about those that go to school and never learn the correct way of speaking. Basically upon any situation they talk "ghetto" because they don't speak anything else. In other words for those that choose to speak that way and never learn anything else. Yep it's a choice to go to school and only speak ghetto even when being offered to learn another way that will get you farther in life. Eh we've exhausted this subjet by now :o
