Around the time of its release it was hailed by many as the best superhero film of all-time now since then we've had the dark knight kind of take that title for itself but overall during the past 6 years are there any other super hero films that have been arguably better?

Dark Knight is better, but IMO that's about it.
Not to say there haven't been some great comic movies since it's release. Iron Man was just about as good as SM2.

Dark Knight and Kick Ass are the only ones that come to mind if you want to count Kick Ass, I like X2 better but I think that came out before Spider-man 2. I thought Iron Man 2 would surpass but it did not. There aren't many action scenes out there that surpass the spidey/ ock battles

although I liked SM3 the best, and like kickass/iron man 1/2 more, spider-man 2 is definitely one of the best sequels of all time.

It holds up very well for me. It's my second favorite comic book movie after The Dark Knight.

It's the best of the Spidey movies, IMO. Alfred Molina's Doc Ock is one of the best villains ever put on screen. I love Peter Parker's emotional journey in it. The action scenes are magnificent. Aunt May, Jonah, and Harry all had bigger and better roles.

The only weak link, as with all three of the movies, is Dunst's MJ. Apart from that, fantastic movie. One of the best.

According to Rotten tomatoes... only TDK and The Incredibles

I'll be that guy and say that it's better than the Dark Knight.

Spider-Man 2 has the tone and feel that I'm looking for in a superhero movie.

Spider-Man 2 is still my favorite comic book movie of all time. I can still talk about why I love this movie for hours.

Spider-Man has always been my favorite superhero, and Spider-Man 2 is everything I ever wanted out of a Spider-Man movie (and more), to be honest.

Spider-Man 2 definitely holds up, although I think it has since been surpassed by both Nolan Batman films. It doesn't make SM2 any less of a film.

This is what happens when I compare Spider-Man 2 to the other great comic book movies with my friends.

"Which do you think is better Iron Man or Spider-Man 2?"

"SM2."

"Over Iron Man?"

"The train scene."

"Oh yeah you're right."

SM 2 simply has that right balance of everything.

I've never been a big fan of SM2. It's been very interesting to see how much the tide has changed over the years here, because when I first voiced these sentiments back in 2005 when I first joined, I was flamed pretty hard.

However, I've warmed up to it over the years. I can stand back and realize that, as a film, it is a very good movie. But as an adaptation of my favorite character, it left a lot to be desired. I really didn't enjoy it very much in theatres. I left pretty disappointed to be honest.

Surprisingly, I enjoyed SM3 in theatres, largely because of SM2. I had huge expectations of SM2, and they weren't met. I knew what to expect for SM3, and when I watched it, I didn't mind it that much, because I had lowered my expectations.

Overall though, I think SM2 is a very good film. But an average Spider-man film.

It still remains one of the favorite comic book films.

And yes Infinity999x it is interesting that if someone were to bash the first two movies before the third came out they would get torn apart on these boards. Now these days they're pretty much agreed with.

I know, and it's funny, because I was one of the guys defending SM3 (I mean, it's not good, but it's not nearly as bad as some make it out to be).

And the thing was, I wasn't even bashing SM2. I just have problems with it as an adaptation that made me not the biggest fan. But it's the same as the Bourne movies for me. I love the Bourne books. I like the Bourne movies. As adaptations, they're horrible. Not even remotely similar to the books. I can still appreciate them as good movies.

SM2 is similar. I think it's a very well written, acted, and directed movie. Good action scenes, and good character development. It just wasn't what I wanted in a Spider-man movie. I didn't like Doc Ock being a good guy deep down, I didn't like Spidey taking his mask off in front of about fifty New Yorkers, or the lack of the trademark Spider-man personality, and the way the supporting cast was handled (especially MJ).

So, as a comic book movie, on my own personal scale, it's always been on the lower end...but probably close to or just within the top ten.

If I had to rate comic book movies based purely on their merit as films and put aside any previous connection to the characters, It would probably be second only to TDK.

how does it stand?

it still is the same movie like in 2004. the effects hold up pretty good and the story is fantastic for the sequel.

i still like it.

The action scenes with Doc Ock are incredible and this film doesn't feel that old to me. I don't see the new Spider man movie topping the action . Also it has the cliffhanger at the end with Harry that was one of the best things in a comic movie.
A lot of people say TDK tops SM2 but to me they are two different characters that I really can't compare. Spider-man 2 had the campy comic style that pops off screen .
TDK was more of a crime drama and it felt they were trying to accomplish different things in the genre.

Yeah you can't really compare them just like you can't really compare Iron Man and TDK they are just way too different. I always felt that the first Spider-man was the most like the Spider-man comics than any of the movies but Spider-man 2 has a better story and some of the action you'll see in a movie.

i still think the middle 'powerless' section drags, about the only time it has never dragged for me was the first time i saw the movie.
but the first and third acts are top quality superhero movie magic.
as for better movies that have come out since...batman begins, tdk, watchmen, kick-ass, and possibly spider-man 3. i flip on the 3 sm movies, i don't really have a favourite, i rank them all about equal for varying reasons.
spider-man3 is just jam packed superhero/villan fun, i can get a huge blast out of it from beginning to end, i like the saturday night parker strut, think it's hilarious, i didn't even mind the jazz club scene last time i watched it, sure it has parts i would want to tidy up, but i am focused on the movie from beginning to end.
whereas with spider-man2...everytime i watch it, i feel like skipping past scenes in that middle section, my high enthusiasm for the film tends to die down when i come to the re-heat beats from spider-man1, the aunt may scenes, the doctor's office, 'raindrops...'.

edit: i basically wanted him to be spidey all the way through the movie , after the origin film, but, i would have been very happy if the powerless section had been as interesting as it was in Superman II. Yes, it is automatically more interesting when superman becomes mortal as he has never been this way before, but with Pete having all this experience of being a hero, they really should have done something more with that scene where he sees the guy being beaten and mugged in the alleyway. Like jumping into the burning building, they sdhould have had him intervene in some way, seeing him take a beating, because of not being able to ignore who he has become, would have been very interesting and could potentially have been the best scene in the movie, like it was in Superman II.
So, it was not only a very boring section, but a very disapointing one.

It's easily the best of Raimi's Spider-movies. But there's still a lot of flaws, the humor is crap, some speeches (Aunt May anyone?) are crap, etc.

Butb the action is top notch, Molina is great, and there's the general feeling that the characters are better developed.

I know how we can settle this debate...

Still a fantastic movie if you ask me, it holds up very well and and has only been beaten by TDK and possibly Watchmen DC since. I have always preferred X2 though.

The comedy doesnt affect the intensity of the actions scenes

Imo that's still one of the greatest superhero scenes in a film ever. I still love Spiderman 2. Its still up there with the best.
