Since i did this for last year i'm going to do it again, this year we have 6 major superhero films being released, well one of them wasn't very successful and the other isn't exactly a superhero film, but you get what i mean (i hope).

For now lets just disscuss which ones will end up being the best, and in the end of the year after they are all released i will add a poll.

Very well then, the big superhero films released this year were:

Chronicle

[YT]i-M5Qx57_UU[/YT]

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

[YT]pOvfmpgbzHI[/YT]

The Avengers

[YT]cFv2xPvQfJ4[/YT]

The Amazing Spider-Man

[YT]atCfTRMyjGU[/YT]

The Dark Knight Rises

[YT]g8evyE9TuYk[/YT]

Dredd

[YT]PifvRiHVSCY[/YT]

I didn't see it but from what i heard Ghost Rider doesn't stand a chance against the others but i had to include it :cwink:

Well, so far it would be The Avengers, but TDKR looks phenomenal and I like the look of Dredd I really hope its a surprise in that its really good.

The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises are probably the biggest competitors of the year, i hope Dredd is a surprise, but it can either end up a great science fiction film or it will end up like Conan, a terrible reboot.

Right now i would say Aveners is winning for me, hope TASM 2 will be better. I heard Chronicle was good, but i didn't have the oportunity to watch it yet.

Cage Rider: Spirit of Nicholas should be the winner by default just for the transformation scenes where he goes nuts!

But.... I think it will be a tie between Rises and Avengers.

As far as this year goes, I'd have to say that even with all of it's flaws and noticeable edits that I think I enjoyed The Amazing Spider-Man the most.

Ghost Rider was fun for what it was and that's actually a movie I look forward to revisiting on home video soon. It was a grindhouse type superhero flick and Nicholas Cage is just one of those cult fandom actors that it's hard for me to not like. Sure the film was handful of cheesy dialogue and some of the writing seemed strange (Come on Goyer!) but this was one of those movies I had a really fun time watching.

Now Avengers I was kind of mixed, I knew what kind of movie it was probably going to be when I went to the midnight screening but I was pleasantly surprised by how good the character development was everyone. I really enjoyed some aspects of it like Loki but found myself way too bored and wondering when it was going to wrap up finally by the middle of the third act. There's just a lot of high budget style over substance in some of this movie that really just left a sour taste in my mouth...even after two screenings. I still liked it I suppose but I just don't feel like I gain anything from it.

I kind of had a little bit of the same feeling for Amazing Spider-Man as well. The performances were top notch but the movie does feel heavily edited and it seems like the movie just kind of limps in a way because of this. Even though it's pretty story beat heavy as the 2002 Raimi film, it beefs it up by injecting the ol' Nolan realism vibe in it...and it works in some cases and gets me excited for the new Spidey world...but I just don't know if it sinks in for me 100%. I did enjoy ASM a little more the second viewing than I did after an Avengers second viewing. I think what sold me on ASM was that even though at times I felt like I had seen this movie before, I felt more invested in the character development in this film so it won me over.

This is about superhero movies, Chronicle was in the genre as far as i know, and i didn't found this thread in the misc films section, only for best film, not best Superhero film, last year i made a thread like this too.

Okay, aparently there is already a thread about this in the misc films thread, but i created mine first, not to mention that i didnthe same last year too :(

Well, comic book movie thread belongs in comic book movie forum. :)

While The Avengers provided just pure escapism and entertainment, The Dark Knight Rises imbues a much deeper sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. Another thing is that The Avengers moved between some plot points a little too, I dunno, freely I guess. Left some holes in the narrative that just stick out. The Dark Knight Rises had some, but they didn't stand out as much to me or affect my enjoyment, and they've become less significant or been resolved completely upon further reflection.

Current verdict, The Avengers has been bumped for me with TDKR as top dog. While apples and oranges, TDKR was a friggin awesome orange.

TDKR: A

Avengers: A-

TASM: B+

GR: Did not watch.

Honestly I don't even really consider Chronicle a superhero movie any more than I would consider I Am Number 4 a superhero movie. To me a superhero movie has more than just people with powers. Hell any vampire movie would fit that bill, or any of the Star Wars films. To me a superhero film requires at least some sense of an alter-ego, even if it's just a code name or some such thing as it is with the X-Men and FF. Some delineation between the character and their heroic persona.

Agreed. Chronicle isn't a Superhero movie at all. Also, they really don't do anything heroic that wasn't caused by them.

The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Dark Knight Rises were great!

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance was a very generic action film. Nuff' said.

Haven't seen Chronicle.

I am very much looking foreward to Dredd. It has the potential to be a small, but crafty, raw, fun comicbook film like Blade, The Crow, and Sin City.

Two particular scenes in TDKR gave me a pair of emotional punches more potent than anything from the other films.

TDKR
TASM
Chronicle
Avengers
Ghost Rider

Avengers - A
TDKR - A
TASM - A and in no particular order. fence feels fine

Avengers wins it for me.

TDKR had great acting and decent direction but it didn't quite have a hold on me like TDK. Very strange considering how high the stakes were.

Chronicle is an excellent rental.
