The Dark Knight Rises How many years was Bruce Wayne Batman?

I am just wondering how many years was Bruce Wayne Batman because in TDKR he hung up the cape after the events of TDK so I am just wondering did he only spend a 2-3 years as Batman (which is the time gap between BB and TDK) or did he spend more years. Because 3 years doesn't seem that long.
