I keep hearing a lot of mentions about HYDRA in various threads, from Cap to the Avengers, and so on. Am I the only one who thinks HYDRA would be ridiculous on screen?

I really don't think there's a reasonable way to make a terrorist group like this work in any way that isn't campy and queer...it'd come across like CHAOS in Get Smart...I really hope no writer is stupid enough to put HYDRA to paper.

Anyone feel strongly enough about it to really want to see it on film? How would you make it work?

Lebeau, Of course I want to see HYDRA on film. In Iron Man III...I want to see Iron Man and War Machine take off from the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier followed by Colonel Nick Fury,Dum Dum Dugan and others smash a HYDRA base with all of the goons in their snake green suits being ledy by Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker with everything intact from Jim Steranko's Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. All the corny sayings by HYDRA Soldiers and S.H.I.E.L.D. agents should be intact like Don't Yield Back S.H.I.E.L.D. or Cut off a limb and two more take it's place.

An organised terrorist group with spies all over the place in positions of command and integrated into society is easily possible.

Reinventing terror from a comic book format to the big screen is a very easy thing to do...

Hydra squads are Captain America's fodder. Certainly overkill for Thor, Hulk, and Iron Man.

I want HYDRA to be in Avengers... paired with a Masters of Evil type team led by B. Zemo. Strucker and Zemo even teamed up at some point... I think that could be translated well... also going by the fact that HYDRA is a good carry over from Captain America... then you could setup AIM for IM 3.

Hell yes! Tony and Rhodey vs MODOK and some AIM soldiers! :word:

Here's MODOK. Imagine this disgusting monster in a live action movie!

See Hydra and AIM I want to see on screen but what is up with M.O.D.O.K? i never got that guy. How did he even come to be? How do you explain something like that on screen? It's a giant head for christ's sake.

I don't see how Hydra is ridiculous though. It's a terrorist cult based on getting bigger and bigger. It's always been this awesome antithesis to S.H.I.E.L.D. for me.

id like to see HYDRA on the big screen but i wouldnt reckon MODOK would work well in a bigscreen movie, i cant imagine it.

If they can make SHIELD work on screen they do the same with Hydra.

They'd actually be pretty easy to update, too.

Chris:

They could use Baron von Strucker. With a Nazi super-serum inspired by Cap's to slow his natural aging process to keep him physically fit in the modern era. They can even bring his children in it. They should get Sandra Hess to play Andrea/Viper again only make it serious not campy like in the Hasslehoff movie.

Strucker could create Hydra as a splinter group from the Odessa organization post-WW II, with its headquarters in Argentina.

Edit: They could replace Strucker with Red Skull. Strucker could have originally started Hydra either during or after WW II and somehow RS takes over in the present day. I'd have it connected to Odessa in some fashion since that organization was vital in rescuing Nazis from the Allies after WW II. Perfect breeding ground for Skrull to get his own army and/or Hydra to be created. Either Strucker gets killed off by RS in a coup within the organization or Strucker could get captured by the Allies then put on trial and killed for his crimes as a Nazi.

HYDRA would work, just like 007's SPECTRE works, and just like we now know that SHEILD works.

His origin:

"George Tarleton
George Tarleton was born in Bangor, Maine. As an adult, he began a technician of and agent of Advanced Idea Mechanics (AIM). Scientists at AIM created a powerful being to analyze and probe the Cosmic Cube and to improve the organization's productivity in its scientific endeavors, while still being subservient to the higher echelons of the organization. To that end they mutagenically altered Tarleton, one of their technicians of average intelligence, into the super intelligent being, MODOC (Mobile/Mental Organism Designed Only for Computing). These scientists unwisely did not take into consideration the theory that superior ability naturally leads to superior ambition.

It did not take long for MODOC to turn on his former masters and overthrow AIM. He adopted the new acronym for his title: MODOK (Mobile/Mental Organism Designed Only for (or perhaps Devoted Only to) Killing) at this time as he was more of a ruthless killer than a bean counter in his own estimation. MODOK battled Captain America in his first appearance.[1] Later, he battled Doctor Doom and was defeated by Namor.[2] MODOK and AIM frequently came into conflict with the Avengers and many other superheroes.

AIM was not happy with MODOK's megalomaniacal and short-sighted leadership and he was frequently ousted only to return to power again. MODOK was so focused on his personal grudge with various superheroes that he ignored the scientific aspect of the organization and allowed it to become stagnant. The other AIM leaders eventually hired assassins to eliminate him. The George Tarleton variant of MODOK was hunted down by the Serpent Society and killed by Death Adder at the Newburg Mall in Newburg, New Jersey, during the Serpent Society's first mission.[3] The Serpent Society later returned MODOK's body to AIM, who used it as originally intended in the function of a supercomputer. However, a rogue AIM agent remotely operated MODOK's body in a fight with Iron Man that led to its destruction by A.I.M. agent Yorgon Tykkio."

I think a secret organization using illegal genetics would be quite topical for IM2, much the same way the terrorist stuff was topical for the current flick.

That fits Cap more then IM.

IM's already busy with the Mandarin. Adding in A.I.M would be to soon for him. Besides, he's just getting started with terrorists using his technology. They could used in the sequels, probably in 4 once the Mandarin arc is finished.

Yeah but AIM would be more of an Avengers/IM3 villain so it is down the line.

Tonie:

True. But it doesn't need to start in IM. They could introduce A.I.M in Cap's films.

Edit: Have Hydra in 1 which sets up A.I.M for 2 in Cap.

Modok actually sounds pretty cool. I can see him as an experiment in a tube gone wrong. Maybe something freaky like when he talks his mouth doesn't move. Similar to this guy from Doctor Who.

Imagine that thing getting angry and screaming but it's mouth doesn't move. The eyes just go really wide and it looks angry. That'd be awesome as hell.

Well, given that ODESSA was a real life organization founded by Nazis, I don't see why AIM or HYDRA wouldn't work.

Yes, MODOK would be a tough sell, and we may need their leadership by now to be second or third generation, but where there's a will, there's a way.

What about the classic A.I.M. and HYDRA uniforms?

The yellow blockheaded A.I.M. peons look ridiculous as is, and the bug eyed HYDRA, although much cooler looking, I just wonder how it would come off on screen...

I'd like it well done, without completely giving up on the look.

They should be able to update the Hydra uniforms into something badass. Probably make them look like green "ninja" commandos with tonnes of equipment to carry around on their person like regular soldiers do (similar to what Neesa wore in Blade 2 when she first met Blade), only smaller and more mobile given their technology would be much more advanced then the real world. Give them futuristic masks with built-in stuff such as earbugs, heat /x-ray sensors from their eye goggles etc.

A.I.M's beekeeper costumes would have to be completely redesigned IMO.

Incorporating HYDRA as a high-profile terrorist organization seems a relatively simple task. I would like to see something similar to what Fat Tonie posted above; HYDRA with some sort of Masters of Evil setup. Even HYDRA, alone, can would in a Cap movie given the proper framing.

Well AIM are scientists so it works for them imo. If anything it should be baggier and more like jumpsuits. Like those guys that wanted to study E.T.

As for Hydra, I'd totally want to see them portrayed like they were in Iron Fist. All full of swat gear and rappelling down from helicopters and stuff.

I'd love to see something similar to what was done in Iron Man with S.H.I.E.L.D. Have Hydra help the villain in the movie or come up at the end of the credits and have Strucker chastise the villain about his defeat and the hands of whoever and that Strucker has something in mind (Masters of Evil).

That works in the comics but it might make the general audience not take them seriously at all in live action.

That's a great idea.

That's even better. Maybe in Cap the epilogue could have Red Skull getting berated by Strucker.

That sounds good to me. I'd even like it more if it was Baron Zemo.

See one of my favorite aspects about the Red Skull is that for most of his appearance he lived in the cloned body of Steve Rogers. I'd like for the Red Skull to die during WWII and maybe have the Masters of Evil trying to get their hands on the Cosmic Cube (I'd say that's a pretty big reason to bring together The Avengers). This is something that they could not only use to bring back The Red Skull better than ever (using Steve Rogers' DNA) but it's a threat big enough for a god like Thor to get involved.

Just my idea though. I think the Masters of Evil being lead by these big heads would be great. Baron Von Strucker, Baron Zemo, The Red Skull, The Leader, and maybe Loki and the Mandarin. Not necessarily all physical threats but they're a group of the most dangerous minds on the planet. Plus you just know a guy like The Red Skull will want to lead and the rest of the group will resent him. Their own hubris would be their downfall and the cosmic cube certainly would not be helping since it warps your head anyway.

Actually the cube's a good way to keep Loki on a short leash now that I think about it. Not to mention bringing guys like Abomination and a new Iron Monger into the mix. Really make it a meeting of minds that S.H.I.E.L.D. can't handle.

Sound cluttered? Hell yeah. I'm just throwing thoughts out there. :p

It can be done but I think their costumes look fine as is. Just add SWAT gear and they're good.
