Batman Begins I never understood that part where Alfred hits the mask with a bat and it breaks...

who cares, it's a short scene that could have been removed but overall doesn't slow down the film in my opinion so its no big deal

Exactly.

"Oh man! This movie is so slow... I swear, if I have to wait an extra 20 seconds before we get to see Batman, I think my head might break just like that cowl did. Crap! That was 20 seconds! My head is going to-- ah, I'm fine."

Here's the real answer:

Alfred was demonstrating the lack of durability their first order of cowls were. That's it. No more. No less.

Why do people keep looking into scenes that aren't really all that deep? Its the same with the other thread "Now we're two."

Its very straightforward.

Meaning behind it? Connected to a deleted scene? Slowed the movie down?!?!

Buttman is right: it was simply there to show that he didn't automatically become Batman with no trials and tribulations. Everything didn't "just work". Plus, it showed was a nice little moment showing the playful nature between Alfred and Bruce.

How hard is that to comprehend?

So true. Reading this thread makes me laugh. No wonder studios produce so many horrible films... because the masses are complete idiots as shown here and can't grasp simple scenes in films. Jesus....

It shows trial and error, that's all. Like Rory said.

I don't get this either... it's like "TEH MOVIE SHOWED US SUMTHIN POINTLESS, IT MUST HAVE TEH HIDDEN MEANINGZ!!!"

I remember threads from way back when, people summizing the kid in the Narrows couldn't be anyone other than Robin, the whole "Ra's Al Ghul is a title passed down, there was no imposter" theory and one that was REALLY insane, stating that the Bat-like creatures that scare Bruce in the opera, were in some way foreshadowing BANE... I kid you not.

And of course, since Michael Caine talks in a kind of mumbly Cockney dialect, everything Alfred said had dozains of alternate meanings... :whatever:

I thought the meaning of that scene was to show that there were bumps in the road.

That the planning Bruce was putting in didn't always go exactly as planned.

So, to me that was the point of the scene. To show some of the bumps in the path on his way to building the suit. I think had there been more of those, it probably would have been clearer. There probably were, though. I remember rumors of Bruce trying out the cape in the cave being deleted, where he probably could have fell on his ass trying it out too.

Beyone that, though....I don't see what other meaning the scene could have had.

It's with Alfred...most of the scenes with Alfred are either light hearted or dramatic.

W H O C A R E S. The scene is twenty seconds long, how is that a waste of time. So don't get all "dat scene sux i rools itsa wast a time yeah!!!1!!!!!!1!!1!

I thought it was a nice transition from the previous scene with Falcone and Crane talking about killing Rachel.... in fact, the very last line in the previous scene is Falcone saying, 'People in this town get mugged coming home from work everyday of the week. Sometimes, things just go bad.' CRASH.

I think it was just to show the audience they didn't just flick a switch and he was Batman. Things went wrong, and they slowly evoled it over a few months until they found something that worked for them.
Yeah and like they said, they ordered them and they weren't right so they were getting more at a discount. That's all.

i agree with this post, while the movie wasnt bad, it had its issues that actually make me put it like 3rd on my list of fav. batman films. it kept repeating the fear thing over and over, and alot of times i noticed myself cringing, the same way i cringed at certain schumacher batman film scene's, like "i think the batman deserves a metal!" "and a straight jacket to pin it on" and what about "you rattle the cages/leverage" and of course "its what i DOOOO that defines me". moments like these, i felt like i was watching a schumacher batman. bales voice was so iritating and hard to listen to, i didnt think he sounded cool, just corny. the only bat films i never saw myself cringing at were the burton films, maybe thats because they werent so serious or perhaps were just too dark.

You didn't cringe at "eat floor...high fiber"....or "mistletoe can be deadly if you eat it...a kiss can be even deadlier if you mean it" ???

If you ask me.... aside from the obvious trial and error, the scene establishes the fact that "Batman," unlike typical superheros, is not invincible.
