In fact, seeing as how you never chose your own family, and that really the only thing that necessarily bonds you is genetics, to me it's WAY more likely that you'd love a friend than a family member.

I'm going to give another take on this. It is indeed possible to have a very close, platonic relationship with someone of the opposite sex in a lasting fashion that does not interfere with the rest of your relationships. I have two such very close female friends that I have been close to for YEARS and YEARS. I love them like they were my own sisters and I'd do anything for them. Too many people automatically identify the use of the word "love" with the romantic connotations it carries but there's a lot more to that word than just that. It CAN make relationships a little tricky if you don't handle them right at the beginning and make sure that the people you're respectively dating understand that it truly is platonic (and, yes, a lot of people have trouble believing that). But it can be done. My wife is now great friends with both of these women I have been friends with for so long. It can work without being forced to choose one or the other. It honestly depends on the people involved and their level of maturity. That's my experience with it. Take that as you may.
