Arite, I've thought about this for the while but didn't see it talked about much. I'll get straight to the point, Once RDJ gets pretty/too old or just about has it with playing Iron Man/things between him and Marvel don't work out anymore, would you rather Iron Man get killed off in the MCU or have Iron Man recasted?

I say kill him off.

Kill off a character that just grossed $1.2 billion in his last solo feature and has been one of the core characters of the Marvel Universe since the 60s? Tell me what's wrong with this picture.

Recast, obviously. Even if RDJ decides not to come back after IW 2, that doesn't mean Iron Man should be retired forever.

RDJ might decide he doesn't want to do it anymore, but we have a while to go before we decide he's too old. It's not like he has much physical stunts to do. Most of his scenes will be filmed inside his helmet.
Give him a break after IW and let some of the other franchises expand. If he wants to come back after, fine. If not recast.
The comics have gone on for 50 years why not the films?

Let RDJ continue as long as he wants to... look at teh Ahnold ... he is doing fine. :o

Iron Man was an adult fighting villains before Robert Downey Junior was born. I see no reason to kill the character just because Robert Downey Junior gets old. Besides, considering that RDJ is just talking his way through action scenes while CGI does all the action, I don't see why his age would be much of a factor.

Neither. Think of a reason why in-universe Tony Stark doesn't appear anymore, without killing him of. Let other Avengers have their time to shine. If absolutely necessary have another character take on the mantle of iron man for a while. If at any point you can get RDJ back to play Tony, even if not Iron Man, then great.

Keep him unseen in the background for a while. Keep the Stark name relevant in stories, then recast.

I'm definitely down with the idea of sending the character into retirement or something for a full Phase of movies (at least) and then recasting. That way the audience will be excited to see ANY Iron Man, rather than immediately dismissing the new actor as a poor imitation.

This^

Same for all characters. Not like Marvel is against recasting, it's happened with Hulk and War Machine anyways. I'd like to see this film universe go on for decades without rebooting.

Totally agree. With so many franchises coming out it will be very difficult to do anyway and a total waste.

Don't recast. Reconfigure. Have Tony Stark die but that doesn't mean that Iron Man is dead. Rhodey could take up the mantle or just replace Iron Man with War Machine.

Tony Stark is Iron Man. Rhodey is War Machine.

If you order a Ferrari and they turn up with a Nissan you're not going to be happy.

A lot of the Stark humour is pure RDJ, so the next actor shouldn't even try it. Tonally it could work if the next rendition is played straight, or straighter. After AoU and CW Stark could get a little Howard Hughes. Not on about pissing in jars, but in seclusion (maybe working on bleeding edge?). Then the recast comes back a little more serious and businesslike.

Dicaprio could do it. But he's already 40. We have another 4 years at least till we need to worry about this.

can we please, please agree that 'casted' is grammatically not correct? thank you

Don't do either, have another younger character take up the mantle of Iron Man, while Tony remains in the background as a mentor role. Maybe kill him off at some point down the line, but RDJ still has a lot of draw power.

Tony dies, but is resurected as a JARVIS style AI. RDJ continues to play the role of Stark, but now as a mentor to the new Iron Man, the son he never knew he had.

LMAO at some of these responses!

AI Tony Stark :lmao::funny:
Kill off Tony Stark :wall:
Rhodey as Iron Man, (umm isn't Cheadle a year older than RDJ?, so when RDJ gets too old, guess what, SO WILL Cheadle!)
Batman Beyond the franchise :barf:

This whole thread is moot, Feige already confirmed Tony Stark will be recast when the time comes for RDJ to retire the character.

Recasting Bond, Batman, Dredd, Spider-Man among others worked (in varying degrees) because the entire universe was revamped along with the lead actor. The "Shaken not stirred" Connery and the "Do I look like I give a damn?" Craig may have shared the same moniker, but they were different characters. Same goes for the Maguire and Garfield Spideys, the Stallone and Urban Dredds and the Clooney and Bale Batmen.

Swapping out RDJ's Stark for a younger version doing an RDJ impression would be like pulling out the bottom piece of a Jenga tower. It would kill the cross franchise connectivity that Feige and others have strived so hard to create. Thirty something Tony would work wonderfully if Iron Man was a completely separate solo franchise. But it isn't.

The idea of putting a new guy in the suit may have you furiously searching for fresh and inventive emoticons with which to convey your frustration, but it is the only sensible option.
