If there was an American equivalent to a Knighthood...

I like this thread

I don't think you can get a knighthood unless you are british. YOu can get an honourary one though, i believe if you are part of the commonwealth like president mugabe got.

as for american version, Michael Jackson would have to get one

charlie chaplin

etc

He's from England... and I think he did get a knighthood

Yeah, the English had Charlie Chaplin. We had Buster Keaton.

Latarian Milton.

Chris Nolan.
then again he has dual citizenship. so england can knight him thereselves.

and Heath Ledger should get a posthoumous knighting by Australia.

Steven Spielberg.

Despite all his efforts to make great films, he deserves one for putting up with Lucas humping his leg for the last 30 years.

I made an attempt to answer this seriously, although I'm sure there are any number of people I can't possibly think of:

George Washington

Dwight D. Eisenhower

Susan B. Anthony (probably would have to have been done posthumously)

Eleanor Roosevelt for her civil rights work

Steven Spielberg for outstanding contributions to filmmaking and for his work with WWII memorials and museums and the Shoah Foundation

Tom Hanks for the above as well

Paul Newman posthumously for his contributions to film and his extensive charity work

Orson Welles

Francis Ford Coppola

Martin Scorsese

Morgan Freeman

Meryl Streep

Stephen Baldwin.

Martin Luther King most definitely. Hell, he's already got king in his name, that would actually be a step down.

I'd say Kanye West so he would shut the **** up and stop using the race card everytime he doesn't get his way, but deep in my heart I know he never will.

Yes, that'll decrease his ego. :whatever:

"I'm Sir Kanye West! I'm the voice of my generation, and I got knighthood! What the hell do you mean you ain't giving me Best Female Performance?!"

Oh, yeah, it'll do nothing for his ego. I just want him to cut the s*** with using the race card all the damn time.

They are a bit silly - I am trying to think of the most stupid knighthood given out in the last 10 years....anyone got a list of actual knights?

The Brits don't have a monopoly on Knighthood, though they are best known. There are French and various other European nations and orders that have it. Even the Vatican knights folks. Bob Hope was an Honorary* Knight in both the UK and Vatican, for example.

*For legal purposes within the US where Hope was a citizen, the US government treats these as honorary. In Britain and most other places where a knighthood has legal standing, these are considered REAL knighthoods.

From Wikipedia:
  • Honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE) In recognition of his contributions to film, to song, and to the entertainment of troops in the past. (1998). He had previously been appointed an Honorary Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1976.
