When did "American" become an insult?

If the Earth was a High School, America is perceived as the Super Jock. You know, the Quarterback of the Football team, dating the hottest cheerleader, has a Mustang their parents bought him, gets straight A's just by showing up in class. Some people are just looking for a reason to hate us, and when they find one they ignore everything else.

actually, it's more like star QB in school, who just worried about sports... he couldn't get into a good college because his scholorships were taken away because of bad behavor... now when you see him at your 10 year reunion.. he's balding, fat, but still thinks he's all that, while the people he didn't respect are succesful and just feel bad that said QB is still living in the past...

in essence, the US is basically Al Bundy

"But we Americans are England's children! I know we don't call as often as we should, and we aren't as well behaved as our goody-two shoes brother, Canada. Who by the way has never had a girlfriend. (whispers) I'm just sayin'…"

:lmao:

Most of the Americans that HAVE been out of the country realize that America is not all that ;)

Our country is great though, don't get me wrong. The space programs, and other technological advances, and medical advances.... there is so much to be proud of...

the thing though, is so many people beleive that America is alone in everything... and in that regard, can do everything, and anything without anyones support....

IMO, the human species as a hole outwieghs any country, any border... and religion.... and we all need to realize that to reach new heights, we need to work together, not against one another... that our ways, are not always the best ways, or even correct ways...

We need a giant squid to attack a major metropolitan city to unite us. Madrid, Mexico City or like Beijing are fine.

I've found that when I travel to other countries, its not the "people" that they don't like, its our government. They ***** about the policies, but I've always been treated extremely well outside of this country. It's when I travel to LA that I get the "hate" treatment. My Texas draw gets me sneers in LA, it gets me free dinners in New York...

no wonder why you've became a nation of nitwits

this is what I've always fear for the americaz

becoming a nation of nitwits !

I've had this great idea for a personal comic book untitled

NATION OF NITWITS

where God comes to earth and tell the people that he won't intervenes directly but will create a Superhero of their imagination in their darkest hour

and God give them a choice betweens Superman or the Batman

they chose the Batman of course

and then there come a great disaster where millions of people perished

and all the batman could do was driving his bat Lamborghini around a the block

LOL

hey this was inspired by a real story about this guy I knew who had a choice of choosing betweens Superman or the batman if God had to give him real powers !

he was into the Batman so much that he blindly chose the Batman

of course he won the big lottery the next week and he bought himself a Lamborghini that he parked in the basement of his old apartment

and one day while inside of his car the basement collapsed on him and he eventually died of suffocation

if the fool had super strength, he'd probably had enough muscle power to get himself out of this bad situation.
then this is just another story

I think I'll stick to my other personal comic book untitled

ZOOGOMORRHE THE *****E BAG NATION :woot:
you won't believe the unimaginable story that I've concocted for this one:wow:

Yeah, well people in LA are all snobbish *****es. Not like us SF hippie *****es.

I've been to Canada, England, Germany, and France... and to tell you the truth, I truelly beleive America is behind in so many ways, that it's gut wrenching... and the reason we hold ourselves back as a society, is the because we keep on viewing ourselves us superior...

For quite some time the U.S was the unquestioned leader on the world scene. The "American Way" was able to draw countless millions to its doorstep. Phrases like "The Land of Opportunity" originated because that's how people saw the country. Nationalistic narcissism tends to be a by product of successful empires. Always has been, always will be.

Another reason why not to live in LA.

None taken....maybe we'll talk after your banning....:cwink: Unless you don't talk to us Bush and Fox lovin' fat people...

Where are you from again?
Born in England, raised in Canada

Shut your mouth, you Canadian.
Nevah! :awesome: *drinks maple syrup*

And Canada is that kid that no one really hangs out with but likes. heh.

but when the narcists elect the leaders... that's the problem.. and why things like fox news, and palin get popular

Who was it that said something like "I'm not a citizen of the world"? That's a really jacked up mentality, and it's why Americans are sometimes perceived as jerks. Some of us somehow see the US separate from or above the rest of the planet, instead of just another part of it.

People vote for Presidential candidates for all kinds of strange reasons, hell most of the electorate don't even understand the basics workings of government. And that goes most countries, not the just the U.S. What percentage of U.S citizens actually vote in Presidential elections and the like anyway?

People in the U.S believe it to be the best because for quite some time it was, and you could make an argument that it still holds that position. However, that does not mean it was or will ever be perfect and spotless. That's where the mythos begins to overtake the reality. Every country with a decently sized history suffers from that problem to some extent.

Lol, how many people do you think would identify themselves as "citizens of the world" first and citizens of their country second if asked? But anyway, James Baldwin had an interesting commentary on Americans abroad in a debate with William F Buckley. Its worth watching, I'm sure google would get to it.

the problem comes down to us, always thinking we are right...

health care comes to mind... yeah, putting $$$$ before one's health...

Have you ever been to another country?

Yes.

I love other cultures, I love other countries and I appreciate the differences.

That doesn't change the fact that America is the best country on Earth and much of the resentment comes from jealousy.

Sadly it's quite possible that that statement (which was an undeniable fact during the 20th century) is in increasingly shaky ground. Not due to other countries rising, but America bringing itself down from within.

It's not putting $$$$ before one's health but freedom before one's health.

I certainly don't consider myself a citizen of the world.

Who is this we? I know of quite a number of Americans that don't think that, in fact they feel the exact opposite. As for health care, how do you ensure everyone gets what they need without someone else taking financial hit? All good deeds must be paid for. Do you force people to pay the price?

Eh. I guess it comes down to how one defines "citizen of the world." I assume it means one who considers themselves a part of a world community and is bound by international laws. It could mean something else entirely to you, which is why you don't see yourself that way.

There are few things that matter less to me than imaginary lines and the arbitrary rules that govern what lies within those lines. I don't consider myself a citizen of the world, but I'm only "American" by birth, and while I'm sure there'll be arguments against that line of thought, I'm also sure that I've heard them all.

I don't consider myself a part of a world community nor bound by international laws. I am bound by American laws. A community is more than simply inhabiting the same globe, it implies common beliefs, common morals, common needs and common risks.

I don't believe mankind has evolved to the point of having a world community.

Humanity will never get to that point where we can handle a world-wide community, like the one we are in right now, with global economies and the internet. Humanity is fit only for small communities, but equilibrium will eventually be attained.
