When did "American" become an insult?

International relations have made the USA unloved by the rest of the world. No offense.

Did you honestly just realize that?

Yea but when the vast majority of Americans don't support the government's international policy, it's really a bunch of ignorant stereotyping from outside nations who don't know what they are talking about.

riiiiiight. It's the rest of the world's problem. It's got nothing to do with America's recent history or arrogance. Everyone but America is wrong!

You'd be thinking the same thing if this was a thread about how the world sees Aussies as a bunch of croc-wrestling potty-mouths who all live in the outback where they have to constantly rescue their babies from dingos.

^So that isn't accurate, is what you're saying.

I'm Canadian, and while I hope most Americans are nice folk I have to say your media is overwhelming in it's ability to ignore other countries (including your neighbours to the North and South).

Ask a Canadian what the leader of the United States is called and who is currently in power, then ask an American what the leader of Canada is called and who is currently in power.

Ask an American to name 3 Canadian Provinces (the equivalent of a State) and their capital cities.

Ask an American to name 3 Canadian T.V. shows and 3 Canadian movies.

Then watch an American movie and count how many times you see the American flag.

Oh, and this ABSOLUTELY drove me crazy during the movie "Independance Day" - not only does the whole world have to be rescued by the Americans (because, of course, scientists from other countries aren't capable of thinking outside the box), but the battle has to be won on the American Independence Day and therefore the rest of the world must share their independance day.

Frankly, it all gets to be a bit much.

I can't even name three state capitals from the U.S.

Well, to be fair, ask an American to name American state capitals. I wonder what the average would be.

As for Independance Day, the way Americans saved the day is because, apparently, creatures that have invented interstellar travel use Macs.

What, you expect something big to go down on Boxing Day? Puh-leeze.

I can name three without looking it up, I think. Anchorage, Sacramento, and Albany, but Albany doesn't count.

I can name Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia. I don't know what their capitals are, though. I'd wager a guess at Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver, but that's because those are the only cities I can name from those provinces.

So each of those cities are from each of those provinces?

To my knowledge, yes. I'm 100% on Vancouver, BC. That's where I'd want to go if I ever wanted to get a career acting on Sci-Fi Channel TV shows.

The Republicans that had authority for the majority of the past decade don't represent the entirety of American opinion.

I decided to look up those cities and provinces. Turns out Vancouver is only the largest city in BC. The capital is Victoria. Quebec's capital is Quebec City; Montreal is just the largest city.

:D I'm impressed that you took the time and that you could even name 3 provinces and 3 cities. :atp: Manic you've earned it.

Important to note that in Independence Day, no Canadian cities were attacked. Take that rest of the world! :awesome:

Just don't ask me to name your prime minister. Hell, don't even ask me to spell the name of my state's governor.

Well, to most of the world an 'American' is considered to be disrespectful, ignorant, and selfish folk.

That's kind of funny, I always considered Europeans to be that exact same thing.

And plus they're well....fat....no offense.

Says the guy with a plump avatar

It's not just Americans. How many non-Canadians would know the name of the Canadian PM, or could identify three Canadian TV shows and movies, not to mention three provinces and their capitals?

That reminds me, I didn't name any Canadian TV shows.
