If they can make the squid face guy in "Pirates" look good...

LOL! I think you may have something there. I'd sure be pushing this if I was him. In fact, I think I'd take a big pay cut to help them pay for it. Not only would it be a lot more comfortable during shooting, but he wouldn't have to spend 5 hours or so in the make-up chair every day prior to shooting.

One thing I have heard actors talk about time and time again....and that is the friendships that they make on the set, the time that they spend together off the set. That is where they really get to know each other, and that in many cases comes across on the screen. He was not able to spend ANY TIME off the set with the others because he was afraid of getting sick. He loves to play golf, but when the others went to hit some balls he wasn't able to go. When they went out to eat with each other he stayed in the room. He talked alittle about this in the commentary....that had to have been very hard on him. Anyone that has done series work knows how important that time is, and for him to not be able to be a part of that...HAD to have been hard on him.

If they plan to make SS all digital, they'll need better than a "top 10" guy, they need a top 2 or 3 supervisor!

Well, they're bringing back the supervisor from the 1st film as well (i think), so thats 2 so far.

CGI thing ala Pirates all the way. I e-mailed Tim Story on this and begged him not to replace the suit but go with CGI for all the big action sequences so The Thing can be seen in action instead of running like he has lead boots on. I know he read my e-mail because he e-mailed me back and answered another question within the text but no mention of the CGI thing. I also suggested to add the brow back and use Ben's trip into the transformation chamber to explain it.

if indeed you have email contact with Tim Story PLEASE tell him that in order to do FF@ justice ALL he has to do is pick up ESSENTIAL FANTASTIC FOUR 3,4,5. He needs to read and study those books and attempt to bring THAT to the big screen.
If he does that all will be well.
Oh and I agree about the half CGI half real Thing.

<okay,...everyone let out a collective sigh because I'm rehashing old stuff>

Just got back from Pirates and have to say I couldn't help but thinking the entire movie, -if they can make the squid face guy in Pirates look so great (and he appears to be CGI in every frame all while utilizing a real actor too) - then why can't they do the same with Thing? This quid guy even had the round Banjamin Grim blue eyes. Heck,..every sea villain in the movie seemed to be CGI. I can see them having Chiklis with a bit of CGI in each frame to make him into what is impossible to do with only makeup. Why can't this be done? No,...more importantly,...why hasn't someone done this?!

People jump on me all you want. They can really fix this next movie. CGI Silver Surfer should be fine. Fantasti-car will be great. But fix The Thing too.

I'm going to keep stating and restating and keeping this in people's (and hopefully someone in charge) minds until I hear a change will be made for the better.

I'm convinced Story isn't the problem....it's execs at Fox.

Haven't been around these boards lately, but I have to admit - Retroman, way to go. What a great and informative report. (Also with story board animation) You could work as an entertainment reporter or in some like field. Well done. While your post gives me renewed hope and faith in my wishes for the next movie to go...it also makes me a bit melancholy with thoughts that our collective wishes will fall on deaf ears.

As a new home owner I'm finding that people just do only enough to to get the job done. We found our toilets were'nt even screwed into the floor. Someone didn't get the job done right. I'm afraid that same attitude will be taken for the next movie. I won't even make a cute joke making an association with my plumbing fixtures and the direction FF 2 could take.

As long as he is better than the Thing from FF1, I don't have a problem with it.

im confused

I could be wrong, but I think Agent 194 thought that Retroman wrote the articles that he posted... Correct me if I'm wrong...

For the record -like mattc says- i did NOT write that article on the POTC2 fx. (In my dreams lol):)

Its from a great site called VFXWorld, which i thought i made clear in that post.:o The link to the site is posted beneath the text.;)

Ok,

Well whether Retroman wrote it or not it was a good find on his part, informative, and presented well. My original thought still stands concerning the next FF movie.

So far FF2 is sounding like a considerable improvement over FF1. But no matter what else they do right, if they never evolve Ben further, into his more recognizable look, I will remain dissatisfied.
I've waited all my life to see the Thing on the silver screen, and while I found Chiklis' performance near-perfect and the make-up adequate... It still just didn't cut it for this fan. Far from it.
Exactly Exactly how I feel...except for the "adequate" part.

But I'm glad to see so many who understand that the Thing should've been CG.:)
Too bad the powers that be are so clueless regarding this, 'cause I always dreamed, someday of seeing Ben come to life.:(

Didn't they want CGI at first but Chiklis refused?

I don't know that just his refusal is what got the full suit only...but yes he said he would do Thing if it was not just a voice-over.

I think after the months of having to endure what he did with the suit...he may be open to alittle more cgi involved.

I don't know that I would get too excited about the news of some changes to Thing. I have a feeling its more changes for comfort than anything else.

I'm sure they learned a LOT from their experiences with the first film. Keeping MC from passing out over the space of a 12 hour shoot was probably one of the biggest problems, so, as you say, comfort will probably be a high priority with the new version.

I'd also expect them to work on making it move more naturally both for MC and the look of the character on film. I hope they'll also try to make it wrinkle less around the neck etc. I also wouldn't be surprised if they're looking into one of your peeves - the hands.

While I don't have any idea if they'll make his physical appearance any different (as many of us would hope) I am sure that they learned from the first experience and the things they've learned will help to present an improved Thing in this film.

I certainly hope there are more changes than what I mentioned....I just have a feeling there won't be as many changes as some would like....

"It's POLITELY NUDGIN' TIME!"

Chiklis would be happy not to have to get up at 3 am to put on all of those prosthetics. A couple of dots an face paint beats all that foam and rubber.

We had supposedly, one of the better home inspectors in the area. We're finding there are things he didn't find. Being a first time home owner there were many things we didn't know to look for. It's all a learning experience but it is also a shame, and almost a crime what people settle for; what their work ethic and moral conscious allows them to do.

Oh and FOX upgrade the Thing's look. It's allright. You can do it.

hopefully the SS fx will be good. but comparing them to the (now reproclaimed) industry leader ILM is hoping for too much

knowing fox, ff2 won't even get imageworks :( (not that that's a good thing)

I agree maybe if FF got better reviews (i thought it was good IMO) fox would have more confidence using imageworks...i dunno heres hoping he looks decent!

That's very true, and I think there were many flaws in the first suit that, if they had enough time, they could have improved with better design or CGI fixes, but on the schedule they were running, they pretty much had to plow through with what they had. Since it was the first time they did it, they really didn't know how it would work until they started shooting, and then it was too late to do anything other than minor fixes.

Now they have a lot more time to work on those things and make improvements before shooting starts next month.
