The Naked Fun in The Superhero Cinematic Civil War Thread - Part 61

My biggest criticisms are

Hank and Hope are just there not doing much.

Janet's character and relationships with Kang/Bill Murray feel underdeveloped

Kang come across as meh. The character has two interesting motivations in the comics for me.

1.he is a egomaniac renaissance man that wants to prove his superiority beyond everyone and be worshipped for it. Kang's obsessive need to prove he is better than the Avengers is his achilles heel.

2. KANG's love/infatuation with forever reincarnating ravonna renslayer and attempts to be with her or win her favor.

The movie didn't do any of these portrayals properly. Kang's motivation to escape the quantum realm would of been more compelling if it was in the hopes of reuniting with his love Ravonna. Would of gave Kang some actual depth.

Gunn did obsessive despot well with Lex Luthor in Superman. Kang should of been closer to that portrayal than what we got.
Agreed. I didn't mind the movie when I saw it in theaters but yeah, Hank and Hope aren't really given much to do and it's a tonal mess. It tries to keep some of that lighthearted vibes of the first two movies while trying to be taken seriously with Kang and everything, it didn't really work. None of the action sequences really stand out either, we don't get much of the shrinking, growing, etc.

Looks like F4 is headed for a pretty big drop this weekend. 600 million total is looking very unlikely

Yeah, I think that first weekend multiplier means its going to be rough for FF to avoid at least a 60% drop. We will see.

In the end, Superman's and FF's relative quality likely depends on which is your brand. DC fans are more likely to have enjoyed Superman and vice versa for FF. I loved both movies, but FF did more for me personally and I overall liked it more. Is that partly dictated by the fact I am more of a Marvel guy, and FF is one of my favorites within Marvel? More than likely yes, that plays a factor. And that's fine. We like what we like. I don't need a majority to agree with me or for FF to beat Superman in some kind of loyalty to a corporate war I don't benefit from. All that matters to me is did I like the movie, and the answer is a resounding yes. And even if it doesn't beat Superman, it is doing well and all signs point to me getting more FF in the future. And Superman for that matter.

So, in the immortal words of Professor Hulk, I see this as a total win!

Now on a personal level

FF had that space chase/birth sequence which I think is top 10 all time CBM action set piece. That was easily best sequence in CBM this year for me.

Myself, just like you, is more a Marvel guy, but I ranked Superman higher than First Steps, because I usually rank the movie high if that particular movie could manage to get me so emotionally invested, and just like I wrote in my Superman review...I cried when watching Superman. I got so emotional when he was flying for the first time at the beginning of the movie, and cried when
he was making that spinning move that is followed by showing his S symbol before making his spinning heat vision
.
Yes, I'd agree that
F4 escaping the Galactus ship
was better sequence overall, it was sooo epic but in the end, I ranked Superman higher because the reason above.

I know its weird for a True Believer like me to say something like that, haha.
its almost like a blasphemy, lol.

^ Haven't seen FF yet sadly, but I could see myself going either way in the Supes vs FF conversation.

I'm generally more of a Marvel guy, sure, but Superman did so much right and demonstrated exactly why I had faith in Gunn from day one. There were several moments where I caught myself welling up. I need 20+ more movies with this Superman and I need them now.

That said, it did feel like there were some scenes on the cutting room floor that would've helped with some of the pacing. I'd say that while it's probably my favorite James Gunn film, it isn't his best.

FF has the potential to be better but given Marvel's lackluster record as of late (Thunderbolts aside) I'm expecting to really dig the movie, but we'll see if it has those moments where things truly soar (no pun intended) for me like they did with Superman. If you can get me in my feelings (which Gunn always does) I'll be on board.

Either way getting both of these movies back-to-back feels almost too good to be true. I haven't purchased a superhero movie in years and these will both be day-one purchases.

First the Fantastic Four and the Avengers all get filmed in London, and now Spidey is being shot in Scotland. I feel some type of way about that.

Film Marvel Superheroes in NYC again! That’s the missing ingredient. :sneeze:

I get two free movie tickets a money with a sky movies subscription
You Brits always have to one up the Americans. :o
They also save £50 per person when they book a Jet2 Holiday. :o

They're cutting costs by filming in the UK. I guess it's cheaper to fly people out there than just filming it here. I think that's why they also stopped filming in Atlanta. That was like the go to for Marvel Studios projects and that supposedly ended with Thunderbolts.

Yes this was also a movie that I watched.

Nice soundtrack.

Neither movie made me cry, so I cannot use that as a toe breaker lol! I was more emotionally invested in FF though and a large part of that was the subject matter. As a parent myself, the story spoke to me

Jersey's really trying to get into the movie game nowadays, with subsidies and incentives and a huge studio being built for Netflix. Happy Gilmore 2 was shot in NJ and you'd never know it.

and North Bergen has been the stand in for Law and Order for years

Film here, then you can just shoot establishing shots across the river :hehe:

I hope David gets to show up in a Star Wars movie at some point. He obviously doesn’t need it but given how much of a fan he is, that would be cool if it happened, provided the movie is good (tall order these days, I know). He could make a charismatic lead or secondary hero type, but it might be cool to see him play a big, imposing villain too to differentiate from Superman as much as possible. And haven’t seen him play darker characters mulch yet but he went to some nasty places in that Lady in the Lake series so I think he could pull it off.
